Brees' Record Could be Broken 6 Days After Being Set

TheCD

Rookie
It took Drew Brees 27 years to break Dan Marino's single-season passing record. It is conceivable that Tom Brady could break his record 6 days after he set it:

In theory, there’s a chance Brees won’t hold the record for long. If Brady has a monster game against the Bills, he could overcome Brees. Currently, Brady is only 190 yards behind.

If Brady throws for 500 and Brees for only 300, Brady will have the new record. The Pats play the Bills with a chance to lock down the 1 seed, while the Saints have essentially nothing to play for, so it is certainly within reason it could happen. We all know how much Bill Belichick loves the "F-You" records.

This is the steroid era of football, but instead of steroids, it's crappy rules that are facilitating the crazy numbers. Marino's record won't be #5 in the record book a few years from now, and it'll go down even further as time goes by. We'll see a 6000 yard season before long, and 4000 yards will become the minimum level of competency.

They haven't even gone to an 18-game season yet, either.

Not true..Brees & the saints are still playing for a 1st round bye & b/c both the saints & 49ers games are at noon, the saints won't know anything until their game is over.

Besides that... Brady won't be throwing for 500 yds...but it wouldn't surpirse me if Belichick & Brady tried to go for it....one of the main reasons i dislike those two.

It's absolutely not true that the Saints have "essentially nothing to play for". In fact, they have considerably more to play for than the Patriots. They're currently tied with the 49ers at 12-3. One of those two teams will be the #2 seed and receive a bye week, while the other will be the #3 seed and play either the Lions or the Falcons in the Wild Card round of the playoffs.

Because both the Saints and the 49ers play early games on Sunday, both teams will be playing for a bye, meaning both teams will be playing to win.

Edit: Got beaten to the punch by previous post.

Yeah, only d-bags want to achieve greatness...

Ya know...technically speaking, Brees didn't need to be passing that late in the game with that sort of lead.

I spoke poorly when I stated it the way I did. Here is the quote I was referring to:

The Patriots are still playing for the top spot in the AFC playoff field. The Saints likely have little or no shot at improving their position as the No. 3 seed, given that the 49ers play in St. Louis.

That's my fault, and yes the Saints certainly have something to play for.

The difference here is that Brees & co. still have something to play for as a team. Furthermore, that record was coming down for him regardless if it was this week or next. I guess he chose to go ahead & get it out of the way. In any event, it couldn't have gone to a more classier guy.

Records & thereby greatness should come throughout the flow of a season/career. That's what the classy do anyway. It shouldn't be sought out when it's not necessary to achieve an ultimate goal. The Pats in 2007 clearly were seeking it out & i honestly don't think i've ever been more happier watching a team lose than when they lost in the SB vs the Giants.

As far as i'm concerned they can go on the list with Brett Favre, Barry Bonds & Kobe Bryant. All great in their own rights but clearly trying to cement legacies rather than just letting things happen.

I suppose we'll have to agree to disagree. I happen to buy into the old Vince Lombardi saying “Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection we can catch excellence".

yeah, that's a great saying but it was made with winning a game in mind, not attaining records. Im sure he would demand the same from his back ups as well.

I don't understand what you're saying.

He was in position to break the record because of his prolific play this season. To be in such a position is the product of a season-long "flow.' It's the product of the way he's practiced and worked and re-habbed his entire career.

I don't understand the seeming selectivity with which you're picking one point, here.

Should Cal Ripken have sat in games late in his career when their season was already over? It was something he worked for his entire career. It was a product of his work ethic every day. Would you have sat him a few games from the end because the O's weren't making the playoffs in 95?

Take most any other sport, any other athlete, any other record of this magnitude. Should any of those record holders sat or not played because their teams were out of the running for the post-season or something?

I don't think so.

I don't know how - among a career or season's-worth of work - you can take out one moment and call it "classless" because it wasn't in the "flow" of the season or career.

You're free to feel however you want, of course. I just find your criteria puzzling.

I also find the implication strange that he's not "classy" because he broke the record. In a lot of ways, he strikes me as the epitome of class (I am biased, of course) - what he's done for the city, the way he talked to his teammates following the game, his leadership.

And many others in the NFL seemed to agree - didn't he finish second to Polamalu in an NFL poll among players of who they thought the nicest guy is in the NFL?

I just don't know how you can say that his breaking the record last night was somehow not related to the flow of his career or this season. For me, it actually capitulates and embodies his career up to this point, including this season. And I don't udnerstand how he's banished from the "classy" in doing so.

I saw last week that if the Pats won and we lost the Pats clinched the 1st seed...so i don't think they have anything left to play for.

I think you're reading my posts wrong buddy.....I have no problems with what brees did & how he did it...as i said it, it couldn't have happened to a classier guy & his team in fact still has something to play for him to achieve what he did.

The difference between what he has done & what Belichick & Brady did in 2007 was that they did it mainly for bragging rights as their was nothing else to be attained team wise other than bragging rights. Them playing the giants in the last game of the season just for the 16-0 record..there was nothing from a team perspective for them to gain the rest of that regular season. that'd already locked up the #1 seed & homefield throughout the playoffs. Brady still passing the ball deep after his team is up 30 pts late in the 3rd & 4th qtr of games...what's to gain from that from a team perspective? Nothing.

I think this record season for the Pats was more or less Belichick saying "You think we won by cheating? Watch this...". Which, honestly, I am fine with because the whole "spygate" scandal was blown way out of proportion by the media. Belichick just wanted to shut up some people.

Also, I was COMPLETELY for the undefeated season because I wanted someone to shut that moron Mercury Morris up...that guy needs to just be punched. To be fair, Peyton garnered his single season TD record by running up the score on us and other teams, but for some reason Peyton always gets a pass by the media and fans and Brady is always villified. Perhaps it is the result of having to watch the Pats hoist the Lombardi Trophy so many times.

He gets a pass b/c in that same season he also sat out the majority of at least 3 different 4th quarters & had a chance to get another TD pass against baltimore in prime time to tie the record as his team was on the 1 yd line & rather than chunk it up, he kneeled it......twice i believe.

Perhaps we will have to agree to disagree. I used to get extremely frustrated when we played the Colts, because Peyton seemed to always use is as his "Hall of Fame Stat Padding" games. Every time I would mention this to others, they would always say that it's not his fault we couldn't stop them, and they're right.

Bottom line for me is that these guys are playing a game, and quite frankly they should have fun doing it and hell...if you want to throw the ball less than 2 minutes when you're up by 30 who cares? Chances are it's going to hurt you more than help you anyways. When you're up by that much and everything you're doing it working, why not have fun with it?

I remember when Peyton was setting the record (before Brady broke it). Manning was calling audibles to hot routes for his WRs late in a blowout game against the Texans. That was not sound football - i.e. run the ball to chew up clock - but dude was chasing a personal record. When asked about it, his reply was basically if the Texans players did not like it, then they could have tried to stop him. I lost a lot of respect for him as an individual after that game. Respect him as a player, but dude is a douche to me.

i think Brady gets 5000 but i don't think he'll break the record again.

believe it or not passing numbers have actually dropped down since the first few weeks of the season, when the defenses were coming off of a short offseason. now they've had time to adjust. and i don't think this season will be an indicator of things to come. we'll return more to the "norm" next year methinks.

I don't see it that way. If that's your game, calling plays at the line to take advantage of a defense... that's what you do, regardless what the score is.

Playing poor teams on your schedule is a little better than practice for these guys, for when they get to the play-offs & have to play better teams.

You don't get better at something by thinking about what you would do in certain situations. You get better by doing it.

It sucks that we were the punching bag... but it is what it is & soon it will be our turn. Once this offense/defense starts clicking.

I don't have a problem with Brees' record, or any of Brady's records, if they're goal was to score (the goal of any offense). If they were trying to make the other team look bad, that's different.

I agree with Peyton.

Heck, he probably did us a favor, our defense was playing one of the best offenses in the league twice a year for a long, long time. With a good DC, you have to imagine it would make us better...... it's not Peyton's fault we didn't have a good DC.

Brees played 2 more games than Moreno, right ?

Knowshon is cool & all, but what's he got to do with this discussion?

That makes me respect him more. The ones I don't respect are the little bitches who whine about the other team scoring a bunch of points against them, kinda like the Falcons the other night.

yeah, I can see y'all's points....at the time it just pissed me off because we were perpetual cellar-dwellers and it seemed like he was all about personal glory...which maybe he was, but all these players have egos to feed and contracts to sign based on performance.

I can't deny, though, that I was celebrating Brady beating Manning's TD record by two. :fingergun:

I guess I'm just tired of Manning after suffering in the same division for a decade. I lack the proper perspective to keep his career in context, sort of the way I felt growing up about the Steelers. Disliked them so much that I was unable to appreciate their greatness.
