Houston We have a QB

Just cause you know the headline would have been Houston we have a problem if Yates had played bad!
:fans:

Jamie Dukes doesn't think Texans can win vs. top AFC team with Yates at QB.

Also isn't impressed with Tebow, either.

I switched it over to NFLN right after the game, and the other two guys on the show were laughing at Jamie Dukes for being so dead serious about how Yates and Tebow can't compete vs. the Steelers/Patriots/Ravens.

LOL. I hope Yates grows from this and takes off like a rocket.

Yates can be an effective game manager and toss the ball enough to keep us on the right track. By the time we're in the playoffs, he'll have enough experience to compete.

I think AJ & JJ should have caught a pass that each dropped and Yates would have looked even better. In this offense our QB needs to be a manager & Yates did well.

Yep, learn the next 4 games, get us a division title (gravy if it's a first-round bye), then kick some AFC ass. :kitten:

I'd say one game is probably too little a sample size. But man he did everything he was asked to do. He missed that some receivers were open and threw elsewhere, but I think that will come with experience.

He did nothing that concerns me. He's got a great arm, good pocket presence, can make plays with his feet, and he's got good poise. We don't need him to win games, but it certainly helps that he can make throws when we need him to.

It's night and day comparing TJ Yates's pocket presence to that of Blaine "I panic after my internal clock ticks off 1 second" Gabbert. He stays poised and keeps his eyes down field and has some nice escapability moves

How bout give Kubiak and Greg Knapp some credit for getting the rookie ready at the most important position in team sports.

To do what he did against a team that considers itself a contender is impressive. He's only gonna get better. Let's see how he does without AJ though.

No question TJ looked impressive today, but remember guys, the falcons secondary sucks and they missed their two best corners. Also he probably won't have his top receiver for a while, but great win anyway.

Maybe, but I thought the most impressive part of TJ's game had little to do with the secondary -- to me the best part was the poise in the pocket, the instinctive ability to sense the rush and the pocket collapsing, and moving out of harm's way to preserve his body and a chance to make the play.

Jamie Dukes doesn't think Texans can win ...
F#@& Jamie Dukes ... biggest id!ot on NFL TV. (pardon my french)

TJ needs to work on his accuracy a bit, and receivers need to learn to catch his ball .... but not too bad for first outing.

agreed. yates just looks natural in the pocket. he stands tall, sees the field, can move in the pocket, and has a great quick accurate release. unlike some of the guys we've brought in (leinart, orlovsky), yates makes mental progressions as fast as schaub.

the only knocks i find on yates dont even belong to being a rookie, he doesnt look like a rookie out there. the knock is that his timing and reads are a little off ... that's simply a lack of 1st team practice.

i said it during preseason, this kid is raw and will need some time, but he looks special. my impression is the same today, raw and needs more time, but looks special.

I agree with that to a certain degree, but he actually made plays out there today.

If he plays like he played today for the rest of his career he'd still be a decent qb.

If he actually develops like I would assume he would then he may actually cross over into baller status for real.

I was expecting him to look bad in this game and vs. the Bengals and then get it together against the Panthers and Colts in time to whip the Titans.

Maybe my timetable is off.

And similar to Showtime100...I'm So tired of that line. :crutch:

They dont give extra credit for who you beat in the NFL .... this aint the BCS , a W is a W no matter which way you slice it up ..... and I'll take every one this team can get.

Well. Not exactly.

When it gets down to the tie-breakers, if you've faced opponents with better records than another team, it can make a difference.

This.

At least he was getting the ball to 80.

Andre was on track for a big day and in only 4 catches. The Checkdown king made 80 almost invisible out there, won't be too hard on Matt 2 I'm just guessing it was going to take him awhile to get his confidence back up.

They also had the "#2 run defense" in the NFL and got ran on for what, 150 + yards today?

Quite trying to find an excuse for why the Texans won today, makes you look idiotic....

Oh that right, your a "realist" which is code for hater...

I'm sorry, but what's that got to do with anything?? We beat them because we ground out 160+ yds on a team that was supposedly soooo damned tough against the run. Prior to running into us they were holding opponents to less than 85 yds/game. We nearly doubled that.

Also, they were averaging slightly over 21 pts/game. We held them to 10.

Their secondary, whether it sucks or not, had nothing to do with this

...well except for that Dunta holding call
:D

All the important stuff has been bolded.

Whether Tj is our QB of the future or not isn't important. He is our QB now. NFL Football is the ultimate team sport & today, we saw why. The QB is going to have to make plays, but he doesn't have to carry the team, he doesn't have to win games.

Like Alex Smith in San Francisco, all he has to do, is keep the defenses honest.

I really loved his ability to make the guys who are rushing miss. Did you see how many times he juked them?

What is really cool about the kid is, he sees it as being in the same offense when he was at UNC, which in all senses he was in the same offense, so his comfort level is way up there where some else who is having to learn this system for the first time might look very uncomfortable at times.

Even after the big hit Yates took from the sack, still got in there and made the plays he needed...

I would have to say, watching Yates do that brought back memories of NFL2K5 , if you remember the QB stick where you could hit the stick and juke the on coming blitzer out of his jock...

I was going to come in here and write about what I like about Yates. I'm going to just quote myself and add one thing. He can throw the ball. This kid has a future.

Ok so this is about 3 years before I wanted to learn anything about him (and honestly I wanted to learn it once he was safely on another team) but Yates showed a few things today.

I heard on (nfl network maybe) the radio that Schaub calls the runs at the line. We may have seen the first glimpse of that breakdown too. Not sure. If that's the case then maybe this is all lost anyways. Basically what they said is that when its a run schaub gets to the line and directs which way the run goes. Kind of important if you ask me. That said I'll go on and tell you what I think and why I think we should go with Yates.

First, am I the only one that saw him stand in there and deliver a strike? I mean blitz coming up the middle. Right before the half ended. And he threw strikes. Yes its true that he looked tentative at times and didn't make all of the right throws but for my money he made enough.

There will be growing pains, I'm sure. Why not let them happen in Atl/Cincy and see what we've got. Lets face it, the ceiling on this team with Favre, Garcia or anyone else is not very high. Second, if this kid can play there isn't much film on him. That actually works to our advantage. On top of that, if there is something to work with there, it will show up. Go ahead, sign Garcia or Clemons or Croyle, but roll with this kid.

Now here's why. Franchises like the Browns, they have been waiting for years for a QB like that. Yeah I know, it was two passes. Maybe I'm looking too far. Look. Maybe he doesn't have all of the tools, I can't answer that for sure but if you ask me Manning and Leaf weren't all that different physically. Both were physical specimens with rocket arms. There was though, something that makes Manning Manning and Leaf Cryin' Ryan. The reason that Croyle is at home isn't that he doesn't have the tools. He doesn't have that stand in the pocket in the face of the blitz and deliver a strike. You want to see the difference? Look at the Jags. Gabbert was throwing off of his back foot all day. Even HWWNBN didn't look like that. Yates, he threw the ball sharply and he hung in. He even avoided taking sacks. He was playing with a bunch of guys he doesn't get reps with. You're going to make the playoffs without question. You need to know if Yates will do it because honestly, Garcia, Favre and company, they have had their chance. They are on the decline. The good news for this team is young. Hopefully we can keep the team together, hopefully this isn't a one shot thing.

I say play the kid. Sign someone else and if it looks terrible 5 weeks in go get someone else.

Mike

P.S. I'm not comparing him to Manning. I'm saying that there is a reason, mentally or something that a guy built like Manning (Leaf) is not Manning. That doesn't mean that Yates has all of the tools but he does have a mentality that is probably the reason Croyle is waiting for our call.

Thank you so much for quoting yourself.

The big thing that stood out to me was his calmness in the pocket even after taking that huge shot from John Abraham, the kid will be fine with more game experience under his belt he should be ready to kick some ass in the playoffs!!!!!

It's not his ability I question, it's whether he's going to get himself killed if he doesn't get some pocket awareness. It's great that he's fearless, but that hard hit he took yesterday was not even from his blindside; it was from his front-side, practically right in his face. Geez, have some self-preservation.

PS-I'm overreacting for effect here, because you can't help respecting that fearlessness, but it does worry me a little.

:D

The Falcons defense was still good against the run yesterday they had a season avg of 3.8ypc going into the game and actually improved upon that mark pushing their season avg down to 3.7ypc.

Yesterdays result was more about when the Texans made plays on the ground than how many total rushing yards they got. They made plays at crucial points in the game.

That and the defense was nothing short of stellar ..... :wild:

Yesterday I was too consumed with the blackest of hatred that I haven't felt since my divorce with local FOX affiliate KTBC donkey banging Texans fans in Austin with the game to stop and comment on how impressed I was with Yates and how awesome that game was.

I was blown away to see Yates do so well and I have to say there is definitely something special about this team!

To be fair to Yates, Winston missed the block completely and THEN Eric Winston shoves the lineman into Yates. Winston actually launched the lineman into Yates a lot faster than what the defender was coming in at.

Winston needs to get his act together. The past three games I have noticed a loss of HEART on pass protection. I'm no NFL coach or anything, but I have been seeing guys whiz right by the guy or out-fight him way too much. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know: Gotta' give credit to the defensive linemen for having found a way to make a play or two off Winston.

But still, if this is his idea of getting to the Super Bowl and winning it...I'm not 100% it happens.

Yates made a lot of linemen miss yesterday. It was awesome to see him dip a shoulder and hop from one spot to another. He has a good sense of when to do that, IMO. In upcoming games, it's going to make linemen slow down to try and make sure they don't get juked out by Yates, which will alter the process of them trying to tackle him. It gets in their heads, and it affects how they play him.

Drew Brees is a lot like that--He can juke in and out of the grasp of defenders and extend plays...so teams tend to slow down their pursuit of him and try to keep him behind the LOS, which ends up allowing him to find guys who find ways to get open for him.

T.J. Yates: From combine arm to playoff race

Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on December 5, 2011, 10:49 AM EST

AP
The chants must have been hard for the fifth-round rookie quarterback to ignore. The Reliant Stadium crowd was chanting “T.J., T.J.” early in his first career start.

Yates had come a long way since February, when he was only an afterthought at the NFL Scouting Combine. He was a “combine arm.”

“They invite you, but it’s pretty much the last three guys” Yates told Mike Silver of Yahoo! Sports after Sunday’s win. “You go on the first day and stay all the way to the last day to throw to the defensive guys and stuff. It was kind of annoying because you’re there for eight days straight.

“I was ready to get out of there, especially on the last day. I probably threw like 150 deep balls to [defensive backs] during their drills. Just a hired arm.”

Fast forward to Sunday. Yates completed less than half his passes, but he averaged 7.5 yards-per-attempt, threw for a touchdown, and didn’t have any turnovers.

The Texans will probably be better off with Yates than Matt Leinart in the long run. Yates was willing to go down the field. Gary Kubiak showed confidence in his rookie during a team meeting Saturday.

“Hey, if you guys think we’re gonna dumb things down for T.J. and only give him a certain amount [of our offensive package], you guys are wrong,” Kubiak told his team, according to tackle Eric Winston.

Kubiak was unaware of Yates’ combine duties.

“He was a slappy? Ha, kind of like I was,” Kubiak said.

From slappy to starter on a 9-3 team. Yates is a fascinating story, and we get the sense he will be anything but an afterthought this January.

I agree. His pocket awareness was impressive. The hit Abraham laid on him made my stomach drop. That was a brutal hit. I'm sure he'll thank Winston for that one during film session today.

Winston should be running suicides all week for that one ..... he flat out whiffed on that block.
