I would never want to lose a game on purpose for the sake of draft position, but the fact is you have a better chance of being successful down the road by losing games now. I think you tell your guys to win every game possible and let the chips fall where they may. Then I think you go to the competition committee and tell them they need to change the system so that losing isn't encouraged and rewarded. The NBA has the right idea with non-playoff team draft positions, but I think the lottery should extend to the top 8 picks, not just the first 3. Something like that would be welcomed in the NFL as crappy teams won't go 0-16 to grab the best QB prospect.
I wish the NFL had a lottery system for the top picks, just not sure if it would be Top 5 or Top 8. It needs to happen, though.
If you can get lucky and get the #1 or #2 pick out of a bunch of ping pong balls randomly dropping out with your team's name on it....then so be it. But to be able to tank your season, which is exploiting the fans who pay and endure the humiliation of the awful season, is wrong.
The NFL should try and enact a system to curb the potential for a team like the Colts (who had a freaking CAKE WALK for 10 years with #18 as their QB!) to tank a season and be right back in draft position to grab another potential QB.
And we know damn well that's what Colts fans are hoping for: That their team traps lightning in a bottle, again, and it would mean they only had to suffer one 0-16 season to get him. Bastards. I hope it backfires on them.
I think this was the Colts' plan all along: If #18 couldn't play, they knew they'd trot out Curtis Painter (who will be painting apartments in the near future, btw) and he alone would suck them to 0-16 and then the Colts get the #1 pick and draft Andrew Luck. Bastards.
Anybody who doesn't think the Colts would do this, well...they're not fans of one of the other 3 teams in the AFC South. The Colts are not all goodie-goodie Good Humor Ice Cream salesmen or anything. Bastards.
BASTARDS.
