2011 Sam Houston State Bearkats

Alright guys, I'm not much for starting threads but I want to let people know about the happenings up in Huntsville. As of right now, SHSU is #3 in the nation (which is actually the highest ranking among all Texas universities), are 9-0 for the first time since 1956, and became the first team in the nation to clinch a playoff berth. I don't know if there are any alum on the board but I'm trying to raise awareness to the history being made just an hour north of Houston.

The Houston media (print, web, tv and radio) refuses to even mention SHSU's historical season despite having at least 80% of the Sam alumni residing in Houston. For this reason, I want to invite anyone who went to the university, or are just a fan of college football, to join me and the rest of Huntsville at the last SHSU home game against the Northwestern State Demons in a game that will decide the 2011 Southland conference champions. We're trying to break the attendance record for this game, so come watch a great Texas team play some smash mouth football and #OccupyBowers Stadium.

SHSU alumn here. I won't be able to make it to the game but if you're close by I encourage you to try. We really have a great team this year.

#1 in the nation in Scoring Offense, Scoring Defense, and Turnover Margin. Plus, we have a HB that will be on the NFL radar by the time he's done here. He's only a sophomore and has 30 rushing TDs through career 16 starts.

This kid's an absolute beast. His yardage has gone down this year because we pull him out of the game when we have a huge lead, which has been a constant theme this season. Still, 18 TDs this season, including this play. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ikLeELQbEZQ

As of a couple of days ago, Tim Flanders is officially on the watch list for the Walter Payton Award.

I love the Kats i graduated from Huntsville High School in 04 and have been following the Kats every since. My Brother is currently a sophmore in HS and is starting center on varsity and Sam is talking to him already, but so are some other big name schools. Either way i'm proud of sam they have really taken over the southland.

I wonder when they will move up to Division 1 ???? The stadium has all kinds of room for growth/adding seats. I think we could do it.

You know, that's certainly an option a lot of the fanbase and administration want to take. Sadly, in order to be a part of the FBS, the school needs an average attendance of 15000. This season, our alleged attendance has been around 6000-7000. Anyone who goes to a game knows its from 8000-10000 really though. Either way, it's not enough to be even considered to move up to a WAC or Sun Belt conference. Personally, I'd love to see us in C-USA but they want no part of us, apparently. If we continue our winning ways, I do see us moving up within the next few years though.

If anyone was wondering how we fared this weekend. We won our first outright SLC championship, and are currently #2 in the nation, with the #2 seed in the playoffs. We only are 5 first place votes behind #1, so I think if we TCB this weekend at Southwest Texas State we can win that #1 seed.

Eat 'em up, Kats!

Wow, I haven't been following their season. TBH, I don't follow college football at all, but that's great that they're playing their ass off.

I went to SHSU in the late 90s. Stayed in White Hall (the jungle) my freshman year.......good times, good times.

Yeahhhh Dani!!!! Rah-rah! Go Bearkats!

I'm a very proud uncle of a Bearkat cheerleader. She was all over the TV last Saturday.

SHSU just earned the #1 ranking in the nation.

Philadelphia, PA – Unbeaten Sam Houston State hopes to follow a similar path of last year's FCS national champion, Eastern Washington.
Sam Houston State heads into the playoffs with its first-ever No. 1 ranking in The Sports Network/Fathead.com FCS Top 25. The Southland Conference champion improved to 11-0 on Saturday, then collected 125 of the 140 first-place votes and 3,473 points from the poll's national panel of sports information and media relations directors, broadcasters, writers and other dignitaries on Sunday.

A year ago, Eastern Washington claimed its first No. 1 ranking at the end of the regular season, then went on to capture its first FCS national title in the 20-team playoffs.
Sam Houston State is the FCS' only unbeaten team. Behind second-year head coach Willie Fritz, the Bearkats rank first in the nation in scoring defense (12.6 ppg) and second in scoring offense (39.5 ppg).
"I think we deserve it," Fritz said about the No. 1 ranking. "We won our conference very convincingly."

Also, congrats to the team in earning the #1 seed in the playoffs!

Alum here! Go Kats!

Will this weekends playoff game be televised?

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Sadly no. None of the NCAA FCS playoff games will be televised. However, if your Internet Service Provider provides ESPN 3, you can watch it free via live stream. http://www.espn3.com Try one of the "ESPN 3" programs to check if you have it. If you don't, you'll have to pay for the stream using Bearkat Vision on GoBearkats.com

If you're free this saturday I ask that you PLEASE make the trip up to Huntsville. We need this game to be PACKED. Students tickets aren't free for the playoffs, so I suspect the attendance will be lower than usual dispite our undefeated record and being in the playoffs.

This weekends game will be at 2 pm. I hope you can make it! Tickets are only 15 dollars, 5 dollars for current students.

Just keeping the SHSU alum who posted in this thread updated.

SHSU knocked off Stony Brook 34-27 today and will advance to the quarter-finals. We'll play Montana State in Huntsville. Tickets for the game go on sale at 8PM tonight. Still just 15 bucks!

HUNTSVILLE- Sam Houston State hasn't played in many close games this season, but the Bearkats found a way to survive their tussle with Stony Brook on Saturday.

Tim Flanders scored on a 7-yard run with 1:01 remaining to propel the top-seeded Bearkats to a 34-27 victory in the second round of the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs at Bowers Stadium.

Sam Houston State (12-0) advances to the quarterfinals to face Montana State, a 26-25 winner over New Hampshire

I was there today (graduated Sam in 2009) along with my brother, who is a current student.

Great game. And probably the most full I've ever seen the stadium.

Did see one Stony Brook fan get led out by the cops. Awful long way to come to get tossed out halfway through the second quarter. :wadepalm:

I was able to watch the game online. Will they televise this next round?

Go Kats!

I'm not positive but I think the games can only be seen on ESPN3 until the championship round.

I was at the game. The crowd was electric (considering the venue). Hopefully I can be back again next weekend.

We get Montana next, who did just about the same thing to Montana St that we did. Plus, they just completely undressed Northern Iowa this weekend. Should be a great game.

I didn't get to watch the game yesterday, but we're on to the next round!

Go Kats!!!!:aggressive:
Game is on ESPN again this week. This time in primetime! 7PM on Friday. Don't miss it!

I'll be there with a pretty decent crowd of family around me. Last week I had to go to the game alone, but it wasn't so bad. I had 50 yard line seats about 5 rows up. Right behind the Kat Krazies. Very loud and packed, considering the fact it's a bearkat game. LOL

I even wound up on TV a few times.

Oh, btw. If you end up attending this weeks game, get there really early. Graduation ceremonies are being held at 630 at the Colliseum. Parking will be about as bad as the Stony Brook game if you went to that. Be willing to walk a ways to get to Bowers.

Eat 'em up!

Eh I just park at the parking lot behind HKC. I'd rather walk the distance than waste a bunch of time driving around.

FCS NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME

I'll miss about a third of it. Sadly. I saw every home game this year, including a couple of away games despite them not being on TV. Still, I'm sure they'll do rockin' in my absence.

EAT 'EM UP, KATS!

And like Head Coach Willie Fritz says, "If you ain't Kat, you ain't sh*t!"

17-6 - Final. Congrats to N. Dakota. Their Defense really put it on us and shut us down.

Congrats on a great year Big Sam.
