Through eight games, here’s a look at where the 5-3 Texans rank statistically among all 32 NFL teams, along with where they ranked in each category in 2010:
OFFENSE

Total yards: 395.3 (7) Total yards: 386.6 (3)
Passing: 253.4 (11) Passing: 259.0 (4)
Rushing: 141.9 (4) Rushing: 127.6 (7)

The Texans also rank third in time of possession (33:31) after ranking 22nd in 2010 (29:06). They’re 23rd in red zone touchdown percentage (46.67) after ranking fifth in 2010 (62.26).

The Texans also rank fourth in defensive third-down percentage (32.29), up from 23rd in 2010 (39.49). They rank sixth in interception rate (3.76%, or once every 26.6 pass attempts), up from 25th in 2010 (2.38%, once every 42.0 attempts).

It's amazing what hiring a competent defensive coaching staff can do for a team instead of hiring your unqualified friends who have no experience.

It's rather strange considering what we've been subjected to in the past, but it's certainly something I can get used to.

This still seems so ridiculous to me after last season. I haven't checked, but Houston had probably given up more pass yards after 8 games last year than total yards after 8 games this year.

Wade Phillips might be one of the greatest things to happen to the Texans.

We have give up 1515 yards after 8 games this year. We had given up 1648 yards after 5 games last year.

This year, we have 10 interceptions so far after 8 games. We had 13 interceptions all last year.

This year, we've given up 1 300 yard passing game -- 354 yards to Drew Brees -- and in 6 of our 8 games, we've held the opposing passer to < 200 yards and twice < 100. By this time last year, we'd given up 2 400 yard games and only held one team to < 200 yards (Chiefs.)

So, yeah. We're a little bit better on D this year than last.
 
Two things stand out from that quote to me.

This is the statistical reflection of the offensive problems we've all seen, but are sometimes unable to quantify. Despite playing a couple "easy" games (whatever passes for easy in the NFL), the red zone woes continue to crop up.

This is why I feel like the defense has been doing its job even when the score at the end of the game shows a lot of points for the opponents. If the defense is getting off the field, the offense then needs to capitalize on that opportunity. In our team's case, they're getting off the field defensively (4th best in NFL), but the offense is not capitalizing on it.

Also, Mario Williams still leads this team in sacks.

I think offense problem is a symptom of Andre and Arian only being on the field together for 1 and half quarters this year.

I guess Mario is better than the haters thought.

I don't. AJ has missed significant time before, and the team has performed well offensively without a star RB before. I think it pretty much comes down to one position: QB. Whether Schaub is suffering from a shoulder injury or just having a subpar year, his performance drives things. This is a QB-driven league these days. Much the same way that the perennial 10 to 12 win Colts can go 0-8 without Manning, the Texans are suffering somewhat without the Matt Schaub we've seen in years past. If the team had the Schaub from 2010's second halves or 2009's first halves, they'd be in the driver's seat in the AFC.
 
I hate to say it but our lousy red zone offense might be attributed to Mr. Leach being gone.

The difference between this year and last year so far in the RedZone has been Arian being able to run it in...

This is not a Matt Schaub hate post, but he just hasn't been a great RedZone guy...

I agree, but I extend it to Kubiak's system. Whenever this time gets down to the 5 yard line, I just expect a FG unless Foster gets the ball. If this team had 4 Andre Johnsons on the field simultaneously, I think Kubiak's system would find a way to make them subpar that close to the goal line. At the same time, it's not a good enough system to make any old RB good in tight space. It needs a guy like Foster.
