Gary Walker

Hall of Fame
Many on this board mentioned that Travis Johnson would eventually replace Gary Walker mid season.

I wanted to know if you felt that was still going to happen. IMO, I believe we are seeing the last season for Gary Walker in a Houston Texans uniform. I felt that last week Johnson didn't have a dominating game but he did alot of things that made our Oline look better at times. I liked the way he moved sideline to sideline in helping keep Rudi Johnson in containment.

That's a good idea, lets try him at left tackle.

I didn't see anything last weekend that really impressed me. But he was going up against a massive 370 former pro-bowler.

Once Gary comes back from his shoulder injury, he'll be back in the game.

Gary is still one of the top 5 players on this team. TJ may get some more time soon but he can't beat his man like Walker does right now. TJ was put at the 3 technique (over the Guard basically) on passing situations (4 man fronts) and was handled easily by Bobbie Williams Saturday without help. We'll see how he does as the games unfold, but he isn't nearly as good as Gary Walker right now.

I love GFunk, but he's been too injury prone and is getting up in age. I hope he stays in Houston and in our D-line rotation, but I don't know how much he's making or what type of salary cap hit he is for 2006 and beyond.

I'd like to see what he could do post-Capers (i.e. 2006).

From a game view this year, I found it surprising that Gary is so much smaller than Robaire Smith.
Smith is HUGE, but looks to be in top shape.

I would agree with you that TJ couldn't touch a healthy Walker, but we haven't seen that Walker in a while. We might catch of glimpse of him in every game but that's as close as it gets. When Walker is back from his injury, I'm comfident TJ will be pushed aside, but if he continues to improve his technique as I believe he has from TC to now, he'll be taking the reigns in the latter quarters of the season. IMHO

man i never noticed the difference never saw them close anyway but that's a big difference

Big difference in their size and their style. I think Smith is more of a speed and power guy. Walker is a leverage and technique guy. He finds a weakness in your protection and uses it to make you look bad. Don't get me wrong, he has power too, but I think he beats O-Linemen by out thinking them more than physically overpowering them.

Smith isn't close to the player Walker is. Walker is much quicker and faster than RoSmith as well. It's very obvious to me.

Flip flop the two descriptions.

Gary Walker's first season in a Texans uni he recorded 51 tackles and 6.5 sacks. In his last three seasons he has a total of 47 tackles and .5 sacks. Money well spent IMO.

I think Walker led the team in QB pressures last year. He's had some injuries but I like how the fans dog a guy who is one of our better players but has injuries....but I guess its safe and easy to yell in a mob.

I really like Gary Walker but I would like to see him at 100%. He is just too injury prone latley. Looking back on the draft it does seem like a good pick by taking Travis Johnson. With Walker going down atleast we have another viable option in our defensive line rotation.

Its not that I think Gary is a bad player. I think when healthy and when our defense played at its best in our first season, Gary was one of the real reasons they were any good.

However, it has been a long time since we've seen that Gary and I am noticing that Travis Johnson isn't much of a drop off than the current Gary Walker. The only difference is the upside with Johnson.

Gary Walker played some great ball before he was hurt...was the best Texan on the field week one....TJ has done nothing so far...nothing...just have to set that record straight.

And yes, I got very acquainted with the team (especially defense) from your front row seats .... took a zillion pictures up close and personal of the whole team. Had a blast and thanks again!

TJ has stayed healthy, that is something that Gary Walker hasn't done in a while.

Sorry, but Gary Walker time has passed.
