Three GMs/personnel people also told me they think Jax CB Rashean Mathis could be had for mid-rd pick.

Now I know we all want a #2 WR ( me included) but I think a #2 CB may be more important.

Just checked Mathis salary looks like makes $4.45 million in 2011,i think thats out of the Texans price range unless they could reconstruct a couple deals.

This is the last year of his deal.

I pulled this from a pregame match up article:

Rashean Mathis, of course, just might be the all-time greatest cornerback to play against the Steelers – or at least the greatest of this century. The Jaguars have given the Steelers fits over the years, but this time the Steelers only need to stop one player on each side of the ball.
The Jaguars have won four of the last five meetings against the Steelers, and the last three at Heinz Field. Mathis has been a common denominator throughout.

Drafted in the second round in 2003 out of Bethune-Cookman after intercepting an NCAA record 14 passes as a senior (31 college career), Mathis has 31 career NFL interceptions (including postseason) and six of those are against the Steelers, five off the arm of Ben Roethlisberger. Every one of Mathis’s three NFL touchdowns have been scored against the Steelers.

In 2005, his 41-yard interception return for a touchdown won the game in overtime. He also partially blocked a punt.

In 2006, his only Pro Bowl season, Mathis intercepted two passes in the fourth quarter of a 9-0 win.

In the 2007 playoffs, Mathis’s 63-yard interception return for a touchdown gave the Jaguars a 14-7 second-quarter lead. Another second-quarter interception set the Jaguars up to take a 21-7 lead. Mathis also returned an interception 72 yards for a touchdown to start the 2008 game.

Without looking it up I'm going to assume that since he came out in 2003 he must be approx. 30-31 yoa. and since this is the last year on his current contract he's probably going to want a big contract during next offseason. We're already very near the salary cap and have Mario and Foster as FA next offseason, they're going to be expensive. I don't think there's going to be any money available for FA next year. We could get Mathis this year but I don't think we'd have the money to re-sign him thus making any trade for him a very expensive rental contract. Surely Rick would work out these details ahead of time, but I just can't see it happening.

I dont care about next year. This is our best chance to make some noise in the playoffs, Peyton will be back next year. Titains will be better. KUB & Smith need to run this thing like its thier last chance. The point is Texans need to go all in!

I want a big contract next off season too.

Too bad what guys want and what the NFL deems their worth to be don't always align.

Mathis can want the moon and the stars, but he's no spring chicken and he hasn't exactly been shutdown or close to it as of late.

He's better than what we have though.

If Dunte got a huge deal, why not Mathis?

FA in 2010 was so barren at CB he got paid because there was nobody else on the market that would even be confused with a CB1. Other that. Leigh Borden.

True, but I have seen a team that were right on the cusp of greatness overpay players at a need position.

Rashean Mathis? He's pretty much just as bad as Kareem Jackson and Jason Allen are. And makes WAY too much money.

No. Thanks.

I would pair him with Joesph any day of the week over the current number two corner.

This. Mathis has been good in his career.

Although I guess it's kind of moot now since the trade deadline is over.

Mathis is more of the same mediocre db stuff we already have in spades. He had upside, never really reached his projected potential.

I think calling Jackson and Allen "mediocre" is being very very generous to them.
