Statement game?

HTown2ATX

TexansMetalhead
Just curious how other fans view this game in the context of "taking the next step". Do you view this as a true statement game like last week vs the Saints almost was? Or, do you take some value out of this game should the Texans win as the Steelers are down right now a bit?

Let's leave out the old cliche stuff we have all heard all the time....in fact I'll say it now to get it out of the way...

A win is a win!

Who cares as long as we win!

This isn't the BCS!

*Insert reused comment here*

etc...

So, back to the point, what say you? I think it is still a statement game of sorts but I think that our next biggest chance to really make a splash is in a couple weeks on the road against BAL.

These are the only "statement" games on the schedule:

Sun, Oct 2 vsPittsburgh 1:00 PM

Sun, Oct 9 vsOakland 1:00 PM

Sun, Oct 16 @Baltimore 4:05 PM

Sun, Oct 23 @Tennessee 1:00 PM

Sun, Oct 30 vsJacksonville 1:00 PM

Sun, Nov 6 vsCleveland 1:00 PM

Sun, Nov 13 @Tampa Bay 1:00 PM

Sun, Nov 27 @Jacksonville 1:00 PM

Sun, Dec 4 vsAtlanta 1:00 PM

Sun, Dec 11 @Cincinnati 1:00 PM

Sun, Dec 18 vsCarolina 1:00 PM

Thu, Dec 22 @Indianapolis 8:20 PM

Sun, Jan 1 vsTennessee 1:00 PM

We missed our 'statement game'. This is a game the Texans should win. Not winning would be an utter failure.

Not to you specifically, just spinning off your comment, but Texans fans have become so schizophrenic it is funny. As I ride around town the great majority of calls to the sports stations are ripping the team (Schaub sucks and needs to be replaced, let AJ go to a good team, same team as last year, etc.) and yet a 6-10 team beating a Super Bowl team is a must win or it is an utter failure.

Of course it would be a statement.

NOLA would've been a bigger, bolder statement but this will do nicely anyway.

Exactly - every game this year is a statement game.

Exactly - every game this year is a statement game.

This is really the only answer. When you've never once in your entire existence made a statement other than "Not there yet...." then every game you play is a statement game.

Repped you for this one.

Does anyone pay attention to the rest of the league? Helloooo, the Saints are sort of a good team, folks!

The unrealistic expectations that I've seen displayed by our fanbase lately is often delusional. I've actually heard more calls this week proclaiming "Super Bowl or bust" that I can remember, acting like getting to the playoffs is a forgone conclusion and not a worthy goal.

While a championship is always the ultimate goal, the road goes through the playoffs. Every team is 0-0 when playoffs start, so let's just enjoy the ride and hope we see our first trip to the post-season. You've got to get your rocket off the ground before demanding the moon.

SMH!!! :vincepalm:

Why would a win over an aging and declining team be a statement game?

There's no such thing as a "statement game". You have a schedule, you play that schedule one week at a time and try to win each and every one of them. Of course, odds are you won't win every one.

Honestly this team isnt gonna go 16-0. We lost to a really good Saints team that won the superbowl 2 years ago and who knows what they wouldve done last year if Marshawn Lynch didnt go into beast mode. This team has beat the teams it should and lost a tough game on the road. This Steelers game could show us where we stand in the AFC, but if we lose this game and rebound and win 9 or 10 of the next 12 then its really not that big of a deal. This team needs to take every week at that time because any week a weaker team can beat a stronger team.

But, but... if they lose a game, it just shows that they are the exact same team from the last 9 years! Nothing has changed!!!!1!

No we haven't....

Yes we have.....

No we haven't.....

Yes we have....

:choke:

Nahhh to early for that we can lose this one and make a statement on the road by beating the RAVENS

BUT !!!!! this is a AFC Conference game so yeah we need to win all of thoes IMO

3-1 will feel better than 2-2, regardless if this is our statement game, superbowl, or must play well.

I know you understand that this is not the 08-09 Super Bowl champs. Far from it. These 2 teams have been shooting in different directions since last year. One is going up, one is going down. And yes, the Texans losing @ HOME to a Steelers team that almost got knocked off by the Colts is an utter failure.

The Texans losing @ <fill in the black> to a <fill in the blank> team that almost <fill in the blank> is an utter failure

There ya go, Chief. I made your posts for the rest of the season that much easier.

Of sorts..... I want to know that the Texans hate losing & that they refuse to lose at home. To me, they'll say that if that spank the Steelers.

If what they are saying about the Steelers is still true one week since the last time we saw them, we should spank them.

If we beat them.... & it's just a win, I don't know.

But I know the Grid Iron is going to be giving them much love.... They need to return it.

That's last year... don't mean nothing about this year.

& we should have been a 9-7 team at the least.

I say this is more of a statement game than any other thisyear. Beating the Steelers will go a long way to removing the soft label. But you cant just win the game, you need to beat them down. When they try to get back up you beat them down again.

When they can no longer stand up you pick them up and beat them down again. YOu just NEVER stop and when its the last few seconds you give them a killing blow to the throat.

So it's not enough to simply win the game against the defending AFC Champs? They have to beat them so bad it will make their grandkids cry, or else it is a --- wait for it --- utter failure?

I'm just trying to understand expectations for a 6-10 team that has never made the playoffs...

The biggest utter failure this season will be if we don't go up to Baltimore and punch them in the junk so hard, that they shoot snot rockets out of their noses.

yeah, but. A Houston team that is 15-1 or 14-2 will have much better chance than a 10-6 Houston team. :slapfight:

I like the way you think!!

Kick em - then kick them again, when they are on the ground stomp on their throats.

If the Texans do not win this game against a beat up Steeler team, then McNair needs to make a statement - that he is all about winning the season and fire Kubiak and hire Bill Cowher immediately after the game.

A 10-6 Texans team this year would be utter failure around these parts...:choke:

Not IMO......10-6 would be fine....do I think we could do better, yes, but I would be ok with our 1st double digit win season.

It sounds like, just to me anyway and maybe I am readin this wrong in your comments, you are painting with a broad brush anyone who has so far thought or expected better in certain areas in this team are some how saying this team sucks, Schaub sucks, fire someone, the season is over, etc.

I know that personally, and many others who feel as I do though I can't speak for them, I have not said any of thses things nor am I down on the season, but I see the flaws and call them as I see them.

It's like we are already having the whole Sunshine Club vs Non Sunshine Club battles from the whole Fire Kubiak era last year.

Anyone at this point who seems to say anything that is REASONABLE (I won't defend the fans that are saying crazy BS as I agree with you that is all garbage) in criticism of this team is some how a leper and is to be scoffed at in jest.

I fully expect to make it to the playoffs but I ask you this, you cool with the team just making the playoffs and getting murdered in game 1 or making it to at least game 2? Because I gotta say, to me anyway, with this cream puff division we have and a less than crazy strong schedule, we should be a shoe in for playoffs. BUt without "real tests" along the way who is to say how we would do and I for one would like to go far in the playoffs, not just be happy we got their. This is the whole mentality that has been beaten into us as Texans fans to just settle.

I see your argument about "a 6-10 team being expected to beat a Super Bowl team" etc....but we all know the Texans were well within position and had the talent to be much more than 6-10 last year. So no, I'm not going to just shake weight all over myself about "hanging in there" anymore.

I want to see the Texans grow as a team & win the next 3; that will be a statement. I wanted to beat the Saints, too; but realistically the most wins we'd get during this stretch is 3 & beating Baltimore is more important IMO. Whether Pittsburgh is as good as they used to be shouldn't be of any concern; the Texans need to beat them, that would be step 1 on the way to their statement.

To me, right now we can't be thinking 10-6 "would be fine" The Titans can very realistically win 10 games & we'll be out of the play-offs.

Yes, it can happen. Their schedule is as weak as ours & they had Baltimore at home. Which they already won. They also get NO at home.

We'll need every win we can get until it's proven that we don't. Until the titans have 7 losses on their record, 10-6 ain't going to cut it.

Not a terrible failure but a disappointment to me. You seem (from your posts) to be happy if we simpy do better. This roster should be better than 10-6 especially with our opponents. We should have beaten the Saints and if Steelers O line is as weak as indicated we should handily defeat them.
This is why so many of us are commenting so critically; it is time for this team to step up and take command of their destiny. We should enter every game with a confidence that we will win.

bb, you & me are usually on the same page, but if you put our offense in the same league with the Saints man you are truly delusional.

I've been listening to 790 all morning & they summed it up pretty good. When Brees got the ball at the end of the game, New Orleans breathed a sigh of relief. When Schaub got the ball, we clinched our teeth, sat on the edge of our chair & prayed we didn't see a pick 6.

& it turned out not as bad, but pretty much along the lines we thought it would.

I'm not going to say Schaub choked, I won't put a whole game on any one player (coach maybe, but not one player)... but let's just say Schaub had trouble swallowing. That's who he is & that's what our offense is. As Schaub goes..... so does our offense.

If Arian comes back & not have any more hammy trouble for the rest of the year, that changes everything. We're still not on the Saints level, but we're much closer.

No worries mate! I don't think I said our O was in the same league as Saints but we should have won that game. Any of the redzones should have been points. If Foster and Tater Salad are healthy (especially if Ward can return) and we have all our guns, I ain't afraid of anyone. I posted before the season we would beat NO and we could have. I will be interested to see them in a rematch after the regular season.

We have done very well scoring last couple years so it is not a fluke. I expect the D to make a huge turn around.

Read your post again and could not leave it alone. lol.

Wouldn't you agree the bolded is based on the history of both teams? I think Schaub will be very good this season and we will develop the confidence that Saints fans have in Brees. Not saying Matt is better than Drew but he does not have to be to take us to the Super Bowl.

I'll say the same thing about Matt that I would say about any 7 year vets... I'm not going to hold my breath waiting for him to develop any more.

Now, it is possible since he hasn't been in any games that truly mattered, he may grow some, & that would be great, but I wouldn't bet on it.

Our best bet, is to make sure Foster stays healthy the rest of the year.

I dont get all worked up with the "statements" and "must wins" and "proving you can beat good teams on the road" blah balah balooh...

What does the statement mean if the Texans beat the Steelers and finish 7-9 as the Steelers go 11-5? Or what would it state if the Texans get their asses handed to them but go 11-5, beat the Steelers in the playoffs and make it to the AFC title game?

The true statement is how your season goes in a whole... Apparently the Texans made a statement to the Colts and this division week 1 last year...

3-1 will feel better than 2-2, regardless if this is our statement game, superbowl, or must play well.

I agree! If we're truly trying to turn the team around and get over the hump, then we have to find ways to close games. Compare the fins game to Aints game. I thought we played half a game in miami, and looked like crap. We played tough, and played well last sunday, but in the 4th, D just let up far too much. ( I mean c'mon, the same friggin play on 2 pt conversion? KJack is killin me) If we can continue in the same progression.... perhaps this week will be one in which we can play at our best level for 4 quarters! If so, we should walk away with a big win.

And then.... there's the raiders next week. Last time we played, it was a joke, this time I have a feeling it'll be tough. But for now, I'm dealing solely with the steelers. Smart plays by Schaub are extra critical- can't have Troy picking us off, and D has to get Big ***** no helmet while riding Ben on the ground.
