Injuries hit them hard in their game with the Colts.

Steelers Vs. Texans: Injuries To Offensive Line Remain A Problem

In 2011, many fans felt the line would take some big steps forward. Alas, injuries have once again reared their ugly head across the line. [Willie] Colon again was lost for the season and placed on IR; then in Week 3 during the Steelers' 23-20 win over the Indianapolis Colts, three starters suffered minor but not insignificant injuries. Rookie right tackle Marcus Gilbert injured his shoulder in the second half, but had no choice but to return to action after Jonathan Scott limped off the field with a painful sprained ankle. At guard, Doug Legursky also injured his shoulder, though it appears as if his is more serious than Gilbert's, according to Mike Tomlin.

"Marcus Gilbert looks like he s going to be okay from his shoulder injury," said Tomlin. "We anticipate him practicing and playing."

"Doug Legursky can be categorized as questionable with his shoulder," said Tomlin. "The same thing can be said about Jonathan Scott with his left ankle sprain. Again their availability will be determined by their ability to practice this week."
In his Tuesday press conference, Tomlin fielded questions about the possibility of bringing in an offensive lineman in the wake of the rash of injuries:

"In regards to some of the offensive line things we are open to looking at bringing someone in," said Tomlin. "We haven’t had any definitive plans yet. We are going to let the participation of these men dictate what we do in that area."
For those of you hoping to see Scott replaced at left tackle after his poor showing against Dwight Freeney, it sounds like you may not get your wish just yet. That's not to say that Scott sounds like a safe bet to play Sunday afternoon in Houston. I'd imagine that Marcus Gilbert will get the start at left tackle, with the veteran Trai Essex starting at right tackle. If that's the case, Gilbert's play at the all-important LT position could go a long ways towards determining what Sean Kugler and Tomlin decide to do moving forward.

As frustrating as Sunday night's win was at times, it's important to remember just how dynamic a 17-week NFL regular season is. The Steelers have battled through serious injuries to their offensive line before and gone on to achieve great success. Doing so again in 2011 may prove too tall an order, but don't give up hope just yet. There's too much talent everywhere else on the roster to think that Pittsburgh can't find a way to adjust in-season and again hit their stride come December and January thanks to a more cohesive and competent offensive line.

Let's sure hope so.

Scott has to be one of the worst LTs in the league, I really hope he starts...I can't remember the last time I've seen a LT abused as bad as he was sunday night. I understand it was Freeney but....nearly every play the dude was getting beat.

My friend Tony hills was cut in the final roster reduction. He was playing gaurd and tackle. He got picked up by Denver. He struggled during pre season, but I thought they'd keep him around seeing that they didn't have the healthiest situation.

But yeah, dude is a lucky sob, national championship and a superbowl ring, both as a back up. Happy for him though.

Being a woman, I really don't like that term - however sppropriate it may seem for the Steelers.

However we sure need to abuse them a lot, push them around, stomp on them and kick them while they are on the ground. Then kick them again.

The Saints had injuries across their OL, too. Just sayin...
KJ vs Mike Wallace? There will be horror movies made about that matchup. "A Nightmare on Kirby Street" would be an apt title.

I completely agree.. We didn't take advantage of them replacing their RG. Hell, the talking heads are saying the replacement played better than the starter. We also didn't take advantage of the "week link" the old guy in the middle who we were saying wasn't very good. Heck, the Saints fans were telling us he weren't very good.

We also never "picked on" their rookie CB. Don't we have a CB of Lance Moore's caliber that we could match up one-on-one (while the rest of the team is covering Dre) to expose his inexperience? Yeah, he might end up looking better than Kareem on a #4 WR, but imagine their rookie having to face Plaxico or Holmes... We don't have that. We don't have that mentality.

Ward doesn't bother me as much as Wallace. Dude has jets. Too bad Big Ben's oline is a card board cut out of actual linemen.
But Big Ben has the ability to stand in there a couple more seconds than most QBs, and despite getting hit hard............still getting that ball out and the defenders bounce off of him.

I've noticed recent posts that are derisive, to a degree, to women and it's a pattern that should cease, IMO.

He can take it for sure, but he is also prone to dropping the ball if you swipe at it. We've had good success with fumble sacks this year, I'm hoping that we can continue that with this game.

Our NT's haven't done anything really....

No push on the pass rush....And they aren't really doing anything against the run either...

I'm crying at Kareem vs. Mike Wallace or Ward.
Antonio Brown and Emmanuel Sanders are more dangerous than Ward at this point. They have a really, really talented wr corp. After the Saint game I'm sure all teams are going to spread us out and get us out of our base defense as much as possible. The Steelers have the wr's to pull it off. I'd just spread 'em out and dink and dunk in front of our awful man coverage.

I didnt understand how we never changed a single thing. After it is proven you can't stop them in rush 4 and cover, why not sell the farm and hope for a hit as he throws INT. What's the worst that could have happened? They scored anyways.

Thanks for look out for Grams & I GP! I think we give a different (yet intelligent) responses. It's actually really nice to be able to come here & have open arms welcoming you.

*some* do not think that way. Oh, it's a GIRL she won't know anything. That's unfair, and untrue.

Anyway, not to start a bunch of drama, it makes me feel good to know that we have a bunch of brothers/fathers/nephews & gramps lookin' out for us!

Husband to a wife for 12 years, going on 13. Father of two daughters (7 and 11). So, umm....yeah, I'm gonna' help out any way I can.

It was such a blur. One of the oddest days on here I can remember, outside of David Carr's brother melting down when news broke we acquired Schaub.

How did i miss that day?
It was magical.

I still have the Private Messages between he and I, as a permanent reminder of what happens when "family" come on here and try to talk football...and things go horribly off-track some day. It ain't pretty.

Through private messaging the guy, back before the fit hit the shan with David being released...I found out that David was lied to about who we would choose in the draft. They told David "We're taking Reggie Bush," but they turned around a day or so later and signed Mario early before the draft. David was lied to, and for good reason: Hell, his brother told ME what the Texans told David...so what if I had leaked it to the press somehow????????

Looking back on that, it was pretty bizarre. Once I learned that they lied to David, it dawned on me that David was not secure in his role as Texans QB. Yeah, we knew he was on a short leash...but that proved in a larger way that they could give two shits about what David Carr preferred for us on draft day.

It's not a lie to tell David they were going to sign Reggie Bush, They probably had every intention to. **** happens, & you have to roll with it, That's life. They probably told David he was going to be a starting QB in this league for a long time.... **** happens.

I believe the Texans wanted to have a contract signed before they announced the pick at the draft, they were working that out, then hit a brick wall... moved to their second choice & the rest is history.

No lying about it.

As an aside, so what if we signed Reggie, how was that going to help David?

1. he proved to be ineffective as a starting RB. So it wouldn't have been any different than starting Wali Lundy.

2. Sage proved that even though we had issues with offensive personnel, the team did better with better production from the QB spot.

Yup. There were reports, I believe confirmed by Bush, that the Texans were in negotiations with Bush. They came before any word about negotiations with Mario. The sequence led to complaining by some around here that the Texans had only taken Mario because he was willing to take less money than Bush.

Why are we rehashing the Carr/Mario/Bush issue? To make it even, I'll mention VY :)

I was just at home for lunch watching the 4th quarter of the Saints game on NFLN. The coverage on the last two drives were really soft. All of our DB's were 7 yards off the LOS and dropping at the snap. Basically handing them 10 yard gains. It's just sickening

One thing has bugged me since that game. A quote from Kubiak:

We were more aggressive and they started spreading us out and throwing it a great deal. Then we had them backed up on the eight and we just didn’t play with the same aggression. You may give up a big play, but get up there and challenge the slant, challenge the short route
Am I the only one thinking WTF? Is this something they can't adjust mid-game? I think we all noticed how soft we were playing them. You can't play the f-in slant by having a 7 yard cushion. They couldn't tell them between series? Wade's vast experience didn't give him a hint that his D was getting burnt? Hell, scream from the sidelines.

It's a bunch of BS. I like Wade a lot, but I'll be the first to begin calling him out if we continue to see the type of secondary play....AGAIN!

My apologies for the rant. :tiphat:

I think he is criticizing Wade. I mean seriously this talk about this kind of talk being about the DB's refusing to do what they are told make no sense at all. If Wade is calling bump and run or tighter coverage and they don't do it two plays in a row you call a time out and light them up. This sounds like Kubiak 100% left the play calling to Wade trusting his judgment and then didn't like the result. Hopefully they'll talk it over and work it out.

Possibly, but if that was the case, where were Kubiaks balls to mention something to Wade? He's the head ball coach. I don't think we have the luxury in a 16 game season for them to work/talk through their differences.

But, like you, I hope they get it figured out quickly.

Another Ryans/Gilbride on the horizon?

I think you exactly correct. I watched that presser and was going to start a thread about it. Kubiak is sure talking to the press differently this year. While watching that vidio on HT.com I was thinking, Damn, is this the same Kubiak? He came off as being pissed to me and he might not have been throwing Wade under the bus but he damn sure bumped him off the curb. I expect to see some changes. Of course the changes will be tempered by the personel they have to impliment them. That's what I was refering to in another thread about perhaps seeing Harris on the field. Bump & press is his forté is it not?

I think he slipped, & tried to catch himself (didn't work).

Definitely not the 1 team Kubiak message we normally get.

I'm really surprised certain posters haven't made a big deal about it (yet)

It seemed like to me that Wade was trying to run the prevent and run the clock out. We were taking away the long ball to force short throws and eat up the clock. The problem is Brees was too good for that.

I for one would like to see Kubes a little more emotional but I think they should have changed the scheme after the Saints walked it up the field on the first 4th quarter drive.

I was surprised Wade didn't make changes. I figured a DC of his caliber would have started playing more tight man coverage and hit the receivers at the line to push them off their lines.

I think the head coach agrees.

I was kinda looking for that as well. So was Kubiak from his post game presser:

Linky from HT.com:

First comment @ about the 1:12 mark. Listen close again starting @ 2:30.

The 3:55 mark. GK ain't happy. 6 out of 8 first downs, the shortest being 8 yards. He's pissed.

He didn't moan about the PI on AJ @ the 5:00 point.

This is a different HC to me. I don't recall him ever being so candid in the past.

If you haven't watched it, might wanna check it out here.
