Why is Steve Slaton still on this team?

The Cush

Rookie
We entered this game with just 2 running backs dressed, which is a horrible idea from the start, but on top of that one of them is Steve Slaton. Why is this guy still on the team?! Tate is basically a one man army out there and even he needs to rest. Unfortunately by the time we got to the red zone was the time Tate needed a break, forcing us to bring in Slaton. The guy CAN NOT get positive yardage, and you can tell Kubiak doesn't trust him to carry the rock so he's basically a decoy eliminating our run option. That was the perfect recipe for the Neil Rackers field goal show we saw today.

Ogbannaya is about as vanilla as they come but at least he's a big back that can push the pile 1 or 2 yards, not running into his own lineman 2 yards behind the LOS. Foster or even Ward needs to come back ASAP, our personnel issues truly cost us this game.

No NFL team will offer anything for Slaton. Cut him and move on. Add to that the fact that Kubiak refuses to run a pass route for him makes no sense.

So we went from having one of the best RB stables to "we suck", and it's time to start seeing who is gonna be the bet RB available in the draft.

One loss folks, it's one loss. 16 and 0 doesn't happen very often.

It's more about winning the tough games, the games that validate your team...... than going 16-0.

Why can't we block for Slaton? WHy do we run him thru the line rather than behind screens? We tried one screen I think and he was hit as he caught the ball.

I wasn't insinuating that we suck, it's Steve Slaton himself SUCKS! Once Ward or Foster comes back we are set, but unfortunately they are injured and Slaton offers absolutely nothing. Its a recipe for disaster if you are going to dress only Tate and Slaton. Kubiak didn't try to run it once when we were in the redzone and Slaton was back there, he doesn't trust him and he shouldn't. What is warranting his spot on this team?

Slaton is horrible. Pains me to say this when I am an owner of game worn cleats from his great rookie season. The cleats were worth about $500 after his rookie season. They are now worth about a medium pizza from Pizza hut.

Slaton doesn't look like he buys into the one cut and go theory the other guys do. He seems to already be dancing right when he receives the ball then doesn't hit the hole hard, which doesn't help his small frame. I agree though, if he's going to be back there use him in a way that caters to his game, send him out on some patterns. Who are we kidding though, he is just BAD

You are correct to point out that this loss doesn't mean the season is over.

But this loss does prove that the Texans are still fool's gold. This team still lacks many of the qualities you look for in a champion.

Thanks for making my point. He dances because he get zero blocking. He is trying to avoid getting smashed.

I agree Slaton needs to go, free up the roster space for someone else and go with 3 RBs when Ward and Foster come back.

Slaton is terrible. He has no vision or awareness whatsoever. He runs into a group of linemen, drives his feet, and hopes for 2 yards and prays he doesn't fumble.

He's not even a mere shadow of what he was his rookie year.

I think that after he gets the ball, he closes his eyes and runs straight into the o-line. The Texans need to cut their losses and release him.

The Texans are keeping him around so that he can pull a Ron Dayne and roll up on one of our O-lineman ending his season.

Slaton is not terrible. He's simply literally covered in rust and he's not getting the carries he needs to knock any of it off. He's not likely to see them either. Once Foster returns it's going to be the Foster & Tate show with some Derrick Ward thrown in. If you look at all four of them objectively you can't help but notice that one of these runners is not like the others and it's not "Yeah, Slaton SUCKS!". It's that he's not a back who's going to run inside very well. Slaton's a classic third down back and in 2009 the Texans didn't have ANYBODY so they funneled a lot of their offense through Slaton. He can do that kind of stuff. He's your screen pass, get to the corner and haul ass kind of back. We're not running that kind of stuff nearly as much because we have options now. We have backs who can hit the crease inside and pop out beyond the line and those same backs can do the stuff Steve does well so there's no real need to pull them out on third down unless you just want to.

Slaton is here because Foster is hurt. End of story. He'll be let go when we have three healthy backs again most likely and there are teams that can use him. Arizona for instance could do some real damage with Slaton in the backfield. He's the safety valve that Kevin Kolb would love to have.

But some of you just can't wrap your heads around the idea that not everybody is either "beast" or "sucks".

Yea Foster and Ward are both hurt, so that warrants him having a spot on the roster just because? You said it yourself, he doesn't fit what we do so why is he here? Because of what he did in his rookie year? Kubiak wouldn't let him carry the ball in the red zone when he was in there, he was just a body. The only reason he was in there was because Tate needed a rest and the play calling changed. We had to throw, throw, throw, then field goal because of that. If your coach doesn't even trust you making a play on the ground to give some balance for our offense then that makes my question...why is he still on this team? This is what killed us last year, being idle hoping the guys we have would just fix their own problems. There aren't guys on the street or even the practice squad that fits our offense better than Slaton? We have a good stable of running backs, but half of that stable is hurt and we need somebody outside of Tate that can produce in the mean time.

I think your price is too high. I'm only willing give you a medium pizza from Little Caesars.

But some of you just can't wrap your heads around the idea that not everybody is either "beast" or "sucks".

Just because he's not a "beast" doesn't mean he sucks. He sucks because he constantly loses yards while other RBs (Tate and Foster) continue to find success running behind the exact same O-line.

I think the Texans thought maybe they could trade him down the road. I think based on his performance that nobody will give anything for him. Predict Texans let him go soon.

Not picking on you but I've seen this alot in various threads by various people so my question is this-would this team be better if we won all the tough games and lost the easy ones? I'm not being a smartass but I really curious.

We lost a close game, that we should have won, but it was against a really good team. So would this team be better if they won this one but lost last week to the Dolphins??

Will this be a good team if they beat the Steelers next week?

I'm thinking that if they play a close game against a great team and beat all the teams they "should" beat, they are still a good team. In previous years we were concerned that they could beat a "lesser" team-this year not so much.

Again not picking on you specifically-this is just when I was really tired of seeing that.

On to the topic-Slaton sucks-we were all cringing everytime he got the ball because it WAS gonna be a negative play...

I find myself yelling at the tv everytime is #20 trotting out on the field. "Please don't hand it...-UCK!!!!!!" Maybe he thinks that you need to run up an OL's back to gain yards?
