Colts hire Tressel - 6 game suspensioin

On Saturday, we reported that the Colts had hired former Ohio State coach Jim Tressel without league approval, and that Commissioner Roger Goodell would take a hard look at whether, like former Ohio State quarterback Terrelle Pryor, his entry to the NFL should be delayed.

And it will be delayed.

The Colts have announced that Tressel will begin working for the team in their seventh game, which means that Tressel will be suspended for six games.

“After the announcement of Coach Jim Tressel’s agreement to join the Colts as a game day consultant, questions were raised with respect to the equity of his appointment as opposed to suspensions being served this season by present and former Ohio State players,” Colts vice chairman Bill Polian said in a statement released by the team.

“Over the weekend Coach Tressel, Mr. Irsay, Coach Caldwell and I had a discussion of the issue,” Polian added. “In addition, we had a conversation with league officials to apprise them of the details of Coach Tressel’s employment and the issues we were reviewing.”

In other words, Polian has conceded that the Colts hired Tressel without letting the league office know in advance.

“At Coach Tressel’s suggestion, and with Mr. Irsay’s concurrence and support, we have decided to begin Coach Tressel’s employment effective with our seventh regular season game,” Polian said. “We have informed the league office of our decision and expect that they will be supportive of it.”

The Colts’ decision to impose the suspension on Tressel helps the league office avoid creating a crystal-clear impression that the NFL has now become an active participant in the enforcement of NCAA rules. Still, the somewhat-less-than-crystal-clear impression remains — the NFL and its teams, in deference to the curators of the league’s free farm system, will erect barriers to the commencement of employment in order to encourage compliance with NCAA rules.

With that line now crossed, the question becomes when, and if, the NFL will take action against folks whose NFL employment already has begun.

We think it’s more a question of when than if.

This is dumb. The NFL needs to stay out of the business of enforcing NCAA punishment. Goodell needs to go.

But something needs to happen. Players do whatever they want, screw their school, then run to the money. It is a huge issue.
For the NCAA, not the NFL. They are two totally different animals. The NCAA needs to fix their house and come up with something that makes sense not expect the NFL to step up and do their dirty work.

I don't see why they can't work together on this. Good move by the NFL or not, it's a step in the right direction. This crap (see Bigbull's post) has gone on a long time. The escape route needs to be closed.

Two symbiotic animals. You can't say they aren't linked. It's basically a minor leagues. One thing on the NCAA side needs to be the crazy BCS and network money. It makes people desperate to win. Desperate means cheating.

That's because they see the coaches, the grown-ups who should be setting the example, doing the exact same thing. And speaking of grown-ups who should be setting the example, what about the boosters and grown hangers on who slip players money or arrange "entertainment" or cars and whatnot? Don't leave the grown-ups out of this conversation.

But if he can jump over to the NFL like changing a pair of shoes what has really been accomplished?
The dude lost his job?

Do you think Tressel would have gone to coach with the Colts had he not been fired? I doubt it... he had the job he wanted and IMO would have probably retired there (not exactly a spring-chicken)... he lost that...

I don't want the NCAA getting mixed with the NFL...

Lol, no, he wouldn't have gone to the NFL if he hadn't been the lying scumbag he was at OSU. Thing is, he looked at the NFL as a safe haven and now see's at least there are consequences there too.

Surely you don't favor anyone who makes it easier or more appetizing for people to cheat in college football. The NCAA is infested, I am for anything that sends the message of stricter penalties for coaches....etc in the NCAA who might want to cheat, anything.

It's not the NFL's problem, it's the NCAA's problem... The NCAA did all they could do to punish the guy and that's where it should end... Do you really think the dude will be making more as a replay-consultant for the Colts as he did as HC at Ohio St? The dude's been punished...

As for him looking at the NFL "as a safe haven", uhhh NO! The dude has a heck of a resume and connections, his services were wanted and that's all there is to it...

I think this is a big witch hunt, and people cannot handle the fact that some people are just really successful at life, and skilled enough to get jobs even after screwing up...

and forgive me for not feeling sorry for the NCAA here, as they've made billions off of these athletes, yet expect these athletes not to take free meals etc...

Life isn't fair, stop beotchin' because Tressel's services have been asked for elsewhere...

I can see you have no idea what I mean by that and very little else I have posted so, nice talking to you.. You an OSU fan, Tressel's son maybe? Just curious. (just kidding on the "son" thing, :D)

I agree. But it's an NCAA issue, not an NFL issue.

If the NFL wants to get in on it, Pryor shouldn't have been eligible, period. As far as Tressel goes, Ohio State should sue his ass, get into his pocket.

Take it to court, if Tressel can prove the school knew exactly what was going on, then Ohio state loses & Tressel walks, & that's the way it should be.

Ha, I clearly understand what you are saying, just a hard time understanding why you're saying it...

As for being an OSU fan/Tressel fan/whatever, I am not... UT fan, don't really like OSU and have never really had an opinion on the Sweatervest himself...

Now, the NFL can do whatever they want to do, I'm for that... You want to suspend players/coaches two, three years? Fine, go for it, it would make more sense than just suspending them a few weeks when they'll end up making the money that year anyway... I just think it's stupid (mostly some type of "Look at us, we stand for values!" type posturing)... I honestly do not get it...

Which is another big problem..... NCAA makes too much money. The players need to get something. A free ride? It's limited, maybe they should extend scholarships to all players of all schools...

Let's say Reggie Bush is getting it done at a top program. His school should be paid for, his board (food & living) should be paid for. A clothing allowance ought to be provided.

This should be extended to every player in the conference. Tuition, Fees, Room & Board, Clothing.

If the player still needs extra (Cars, Bling, whatever....... ) that's on him & they need to catch/punish him way before his junior/senior season..... how hard can that be?

Hervoyel

BUENO!
The NCAA just needs to require that anyone getting a scholarship to play football complete their eligibility. You get four years free ride, you play for four years. If you leave early then you owe the university whatever your classes would have cost.

In return the players should get benefits such as those mentioned by TK. I'd even go so far as to say they should get a stipend of some sort. Put some money in these kids pockets and they'd be less vulnerable to outside influences.

The NFL simply needs to follow its own rules and take a stand on taking players under a certain age and/or with less than "x" amount of college eligibility remaining. Don't take them, ever, under any circumstances.

There's no point in trying to enforce NCAA punishments on people you've let into the NFL. That's just retarded (though for Goodell that's par for the course. He needs to go badly).

Some will say that system exists now. Scholarships already pay room, board, & food. Who will decide how much is appropriate for a "clothing allowance"?

I like baseball's system. A promising high school kid has the opportunity to play for a college team if he wants the degree possibilities going to college affords. If he'd rather go straight for the money then he has the opportunity to join some big league farm system - assuming the big league scouts agree.

You don't hear about baseball players getting these <ahem> perks like you hear about football players. Baseball must be doing something right.

that's because the general interest in college baseball is not close to that of college football... not counting either sport's postseason...

if college baseball was anywhere close to what college football is in interest, you'd see more of the "perks"...

you never hear about college swimmers, golfers and soccer players getting special perks either...

The vast sums of money flowing into colleges and universities through football programs dwarfs what comes in from all other sports, combined.
Like Herv said, there needs to be a way to get these players some cash in their pockets.

Actually that's the issue isn't it?

The colleges need to pay these guys or there needs to be a something like a post-high school, minor league football system. And it should be funded by the NFL.

Otherwise these shady boosters and quasi-agents will keep doing what they've been doing; pimping these kids.

That's a lot different than having Goodell come down on him publicly.
Yeah it is different, but is it worse? Pryor is appealing his suspension. Tressel is voluntarily being suspended. Why have the principal get involved if the teacher and student have already worked it out?

Edit: From ProFootballTalk.com

Appearing on ESPN Radio today, Goodell said that if the Colts didn’t sit Tressel down at the start of the season, Goodell would have done it himself.

“I didn’t have to get to that point,” he said. “But I think it was clear that if they did not take an appropriate action then I would have taken action.”

No consequences for the scumbag from SoCal who went to Seattle.

Tressel needs to sue.

Yes, it's a HUGE issue...for the NCAA (not the NFL) to solve.

The NCAA needs to start punishing schools like the did when they handed down the "death penalty" to SMU. Scare the schools (and the boosters) enough and they'll stop their actions.

It's one thing for the NCAA to "bad mouth" a former member of their ranks, but the NFL should play no part in the charade.

Just one thing. The NCAA, especially the NCAA I've known all my life, can't and won't do it without help from the NFL. If you guys think something real can get done by this NCAA alone, you are kidding yourselves, either that or you are worried about your own school.

Seperate entities? I'll buy that. Nothing in common, riiiiiight. The circumstances here call for different tactics. Don't buy into this BS that the NCAA alone will correct this problem.

The Colts took action before Goodell did.
Goodell: If Colts hadn’t suspended Tressel, I would have
Posted by Michael David Smith on September 6, 2011, 12:32 PM EDT
Terrelle Pryor, Jim Tressel AP

When the Indianapolis Colts announced that new consultant Jim Tressel would have to sit out the team’s first six games, they made it sound like that was a mutual decision between Tressel and the team. But NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell says that if they hadn’t reached that mutual decision, he would have made the decision for them.

The question is, What constitutes an appropriate action? Tressel broke NCAA rules and lost his job as head coach at Ohio state, but when did it become the NFL’s job to punish people for breaking NCAA rules?

The answer to that question is that it became the NFL’s job when the NFL decided to suspend Tressel’s old quarterback, Terrelle Pryor, for the first five games of this season — the same number of games Pryor was initially suspended for the start of Ohio State’s season, before he ultimately left Ohio State and entered the NFL’s supplemental draft.

Once the NFL suspended Pryor, it would have been unseemly not to suspend Tressel. But suspending Tressel would also create a messy precedent: Does the NFL really want to get into the business of suspending coaches who leave colleges with an NCAA mess in their wakes?

As far as Goodell is concerned, the Colts’ decision to bench Tressel for six games means he won’t have to set any precedent.

“They made a determination not to allow him to start coaching until Week 7 and I support that decision,” Goodell said. “I think it’s a wise one.”

The question is whether Goodell will make the same decision the next time such a situation arises.

Pryor was punished enough... Without punishment from the NCAA, the guy could have played his senior season and done well enough to go in the 1st/2nd round of the '12 draft... Instead, he went in the 3rd round of the 11 supplemental draft... The punishment worked....

Had Tressel not faced punishment by the NCAA, he would have still had his comfortable position at tOSU...

Do any of you pro-NFL regulating college football folks really believe Tressel got over here? "Man, this cush job here at tOSU where everyone loves me is really great... I'm making this great bank-roll, I can retire here and maybe make AD, maybe run for mayor of this town/governor of this state one day... If things get shaky, some other big-time university will pay me about the same to head their football program/athletic department... Or if I get bored here, maybe some other university will lure me away with even more money and stability... But Man! This replay-consultant gig with the Colts sure is tempting....."

NO! The punishment worked...

I don't like two entities joining together to blackball a guy, especially when one of those entities is heavily involved in working with the government via Public universities etc...

Also, keep in mind that not every college athlete/coach is good enough to just up and "escape" to the NFL...

If the person's services are desired elsewhere, too bad, you tried...

Basically this boils down to two things IMO: Goodie exercising his power and; Goodie creating examples of people to be used in the future to say "we uphold values here!"...

drunkcookie

2 drunk 2 cook
Also, the whole goal behind NCAA suspensions etc... is to rid the game of as much cheating as possible...

If Tressel goes on to the NFL, he is no longer in the NCAA... There, you got rid of a cheater... And if he decides to come back, uphold the previous suspension etc... and start it right then and there...

I like what the NCAA did with Tennessee bball coach Pearl: three year suspension... That suspension has some nuts behind it and goes a lot further in punishing/deterring than any 6/whatever-game suspension ever will!
