Houston Texans running back Arian Foster on Wednesday posted a picture of an MRI of his hamstring on Twitter, prompting questions about the severity of his injury and his openness about it.

"This is an MRI of my hamstring, The white stuff surrounding the muscle is known in the medical world as anti-awesomeness," he wrote, providing a link to a picture of the MRI image.

Dr. Michael Kaplan, ESPN's sports medicine expert, provided his own analysis of Foster's injury Wednesday and said that it is significant, based on the image the running back posted.

"The MRI scan tweeted by Foster demonstrates considerable muscle damage with bleeding and swelling," Kaplan said. "Treatment is conservative. Rest, physical therapy with stretching and ultrasound, and anti-inflammatory medicine will be employed. Foster will use a gradual strengthening program when he's ready. A return to the field would not be expected before three to four weeks. Premature exertion risks re-tear and longer convalescence."

The NFL said in a statement to ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter that the league's Twitter policy did not cover Foster's actions and any discipline would be at the team's discretion.

"We are aware that Arian tweeted a picture of his MRI," Texans general manager Rick Smith said in a statement. "It is a violation of team policy to disclose medical information via social media and he is aware of that. We will handle the situation internally."

Foster defended providing the image to his Twitter followers with a tweet later Wednesday.

"If I had a 'significant injury' why post it? I'll be fine, it was jus meant to make fun of the whole situation. Humor is lost nowadays," he wrote.

On Sunday, Texans coach Gary Kubiak said he was optimistic that Foster would be ready for the team's regular-season opener against the Indianapolis Colts.

Foster sat out Houston's preseason opener, then rushed five times for 47 yards and two touchdowns in the Texans' 27-14 win over New Orleans on Aug. 20. He was hurt on his eighth carry against the 49ers on Saturday.

"Looks like we're dealing with the same thing we were dealing with at the start of camp," Kubiak said Sunday. "Hopefully, we can get him back on the rehab train, and get him ready for opening day. He'll be day to day."

Kubiak said head athletic trainer Geoff Kaplan offered a "very positive" outlook for Foster's recovery, though Kubiak stopped short of saying Foster would definitely be healed in time for the Sept. 11 opener against Indianapolis.

"Until he hops back out there, there's a concern," Kubiak said. "But it sounds like we're heading in the right direction."

so you guys think carr will be a better pick than harrington? i hope so. he needs to lead our new franchise to glory.

Gotta love the guy, he actually likes for us to know all these things that the team would of kept quiet and would of left us guessing !

Come on TB. You know THAT name is never supposed to be mentioned around here. Delete it before the football gods smite us for good!

HAHAHAHAHA!!!! And that is not even TB. I knew he would know better. Shows you how easily we can be fooled by a person's avatar.

Trap Star, delete the name now, please. Quickly before the gods see it!

I doubt Arian was stroking his ego by posting his MRI...

The dude tweets his poetry and philosophy, which to me shows he enjoys sharing his feelings etc... with his followers...

I'm sure sharing his MRI wasn't a good move, but he did and it seems to fall in line with his open-book style on twitter...

I don't see the upside of him releasing this, other than to stroke his ego.

He's made some dumb moves on Twitter the last few days. He needs to stop tweeting and work on his rehab.

I hope this was a series of one-time blunders and not signs of the personality he had at Tenn.

It's all part of the projected ethos. I am a big fan of Foster, and I like his schtick. However, this is one of those things that makes me perturbed given the "time, score and situation" due to the proximity of the season, the fragility of the team's momentum going into the season, this injury is re-occurring, and contract negotiations are on the horizon. IMO if he wants "off the field" Arian to be heard about football related matters, since his action hovers over the NFL's social media policy, he should do it when "on the field" Arian is producing - and I expect Arian to produce quite a bit, for the Texans and my fantasy team, Dr. Cameltoe.

The above is a narrative of one, but not limited to.

If Arian can't play week 1 due to the injury, I won't be surprised if they suspend him. Tweeting an MRI is something I would expect from Ocho Cinco, not Arian Foster. Do you see Peyton sending out pictures of his neck?

Well, isn't this just wonderful.

He post's his MRI, to where outside medical experts are opining that he needs 4 week recovery time.

So, if he plays in the Indy game, and re-aggravates it, as I'm betting that he will, then he's going to make the coaches/staff look like idiots. I can see it already ... "Well, the MRI showed that he wasn't ready to play, so why did you play him?"

Yeah, Rick Smith certainly needs to handle this internally.

Agree, Part II.

I doubt the Texans are dumb enough to play Arian before he's ready. But the problem Arian has handed the coaching staff and front office is that they no longer have the option of bluffing. They can no longer pretend Arian is well enough to start the first game.

That strikes me as really silly. How exactly does one target a hamstring?

True. All that poking and prodding is free rehab. :) I just don't see the point of showing your weaknesses. His CBA twitpic was much better humor.

I'm not worried about the RB corps--so I'm not too worried regardless. Just let the thing heal and we'll ride Tate week one if need be.

I feel the same way. Sure is nice to have real depth for once.

I just wish they had let Arian rest his leg the entire preseason. What was to be gained from giving him any meaningless snaps?

I don't have any doubt that's true. Targeting a knee or a shoulder or a neck, no problem.

But an interior thigh muscle? Silly.

I think Bruschi mentioned something about getting off the pile and pushing himself up by putting pressure on the hamstring etc.., just anything to irritate it.. Whether that would work or not I wouldn't know...

Either way, everyone already knew Foster had a hamstring problem twice already this camp/preseason, and I'm sure they already knew where his hamstring was...

It was really no news... I'm sure other team doctors already knew the likely severity of it without actually seeing the one MRI image, based on it being such an issue for Foster this preseason...

Back in the day of the Oilers, I would speak to Larry Moriarty on many Monday mornings. I remember him talking about players targeting his areas of muscle injury in general (such as pounding and gouging the muscle with their thumbs) when they were known........especially under piles.

Direct trauma to a hamstring will virtually in itself never lead to primary tears in uninjured muscle. If the hamstring is recently healed or partially healed, direct trauma to the uninjured portions of the hamstring seldom creates any significant problem. However, if that trauma is applied to the previous site of tear, it can easily place the whole muscle(s) in severe spasm......at very least taking the player out of the game. Or, if ignored and the player continues play, and the muscle is forcefully re-stretch, a re-tear is the likely scenario. The hamstring is not a single muscle. It is a group of muscles that cover a great deal of surface both in width and length. That’s why the last thing a team would want to identify the exact site of injury (as with an MRI) to target.

I don't know if this has been asked of you somewhere else Cloak, but since the MRI has been made public, what is your assessment? And what is your opinion of Arian playing in the Indy game, as far as reinjury/re-aggravation is concerns?

A funny thing I read about the MRI Foster linked was that he left his DOB and Social Security number visible on it. I guess he will not only be targeted by other players, but by identity thieves as well. Ouch lol.

:toropalm:

It's not his SSN. And his DOB can be found on wikipedia.

This was my post before other media doctors offered their MRI interpretations:

Cloak are you a Dr? My Dr. Friend pretty much said what you did. Im just wondering if this really is his MRI. Maybe its just me wanting to not believe he will be out and or nursing this injury all season. If so I really hope Tate can stay healthy and show us pre-season game 2 to us the first 4-6 weeks if not more. Screw fantasy football, I want my Texans in the playoffs!!
