For the first time since Jim Harbaugh started Week 17 in 1997, the Indianapolis Colts expect to have a quarterback other than Peyton Manning at the helm when they start the 2011 season.

It’s becoming increasingly clear that the Colts are preparing not to have Manning: They signed Kerry Collins today, and ESPN’s Chris Mortensen is reporting that the Colts’ top brass does not believe Manning will be ready for the regular-season opener in Houston.

However, Manning remains hopeful that he’ll be far enough along in his recovery from neck surgery that he can line up under center against the Texans. Given Manning’s track record of never missing more than one play because of injury, no one should bet against Manning if he thinks he can do it.

Hey, a guy can hope can't he? :texflag:

If we were any other team I imagine he'd just sit. But he has owned us his entire career. We are his golden ticket to the HoF, he will try to play.

Peyton will play. I think some of it is blowing smoke, but Peyton doesn't have to be 100% to play.

who cares if he plays or not if he does i hope we get alot of sacks and pressure on him

I'm kinda 50/50 on this. No Manning, and the Colts offense will struggle to put up points. Manning playing before he's 100%, and it give the Texans a chance to put a good (but clean) hit on him that could affect the Colts season.

And pardon me for wanting the Colts to taste a little misfortune. They've been blessed to have the same All Universe QB play every game in every season. What goes around, comes around.

Colts activated Peyton Manning from the physically unable to perform list, meaning he now can start practicing.

So what do we all think now?

I'm starting to think he will be the starter for Week 1.

Edit: Mort chimes in.

Chris Mortensen
Manning's exit from PUP list was expected. The issue is whether he can be ready for the opener. That is still very iffy.

I have been saying for weeks I don't believe all this Peyton not starting talk. I think it is smoke and mirrors to get the Texans feeling bigger than they should. I think he will start and be fine against the Texans.

We beat them last year on opening day, so Manning or no Manning, I believe that we can do it again! :texflag:

It doesn't matter if he plays. He's going to look like this for most of the 4th quarter as we run out the clock.

We're his ticket? Are you kidding me? We're not even in his top 20 reasons to put him in the HOF. If we never existed he would still be in the HOF. Twice.

It was intended to be funny.
But also based on facts. His QB rating against us is 105, one of the highest against any team. He's 16-2 against us. He has 42 touchdowns against us. More than against any other team.

Yeah, he beat up on weak ass Texans teams.

GUESS WHAT?!?!?!

Time to return the favor!!! You think Mario's gonna come screamin around the edge and let up so he doesn't hurt PEYTON MANNING'S neck?!? You think Antonio Smith is just gonna push you over? That dude would crush Manning like Haynesworth did to Schaub. You think Brooks Reed gives half of a bag of crap about PEYTON MANNING?!?!?

Dude is in trouble if he starts. He better feel good because he won't feel so hot afterwards....

Pardon most assuredly granted. :whip:

I wouldn't put too much into this. He needed to be off PUP to have any chance of coming back before the 7th week.

One very important point. He won't have any practice being hit!

Last year in the opener, our crappy assed defense got to him over and over.

I think this defense will get to him more than that one did and I think our coverage will be better.

And that's before our defense "gels".

While I don't want to see Manning hurt or injured, I do want to see him question himself regarding why he continues to play football after playing our defense. I want to lose my voice in my living room from celebrating our defense!!

I want Manning to dread playing us for the rest of his career.

The Colts aren't stupid, they know if Manning plays that they need to keep him safe. He will do a lot of handoffs, RB screens, and 3 step drop quick passes to keep the pass rush from hitting him. Our secondary better be ready to play some D close to the line of scrimmage.

He was hit last year with his 3 step drops.

Dont the Dolts have two rookies at the tackle spots ?! I cant imagine them putting Manning out there at anything short of 100% if thats the case .... It would be a suicidal decision on the part of the franchise. Not just against the Texans but against almost any NFL defense.

Asked if his defense is preparing to face the Colts with Peyton Manning in Week 1, Texans coach Gary Kubiak said, “We expect the Colts to be at their best, so you bet.”

Of course, they're preparing for the Colts with Manning. That doesn't mean he expects that Manning will definitely be playing. It simply means that if they prepare for Manning, they will be prepared to face off any other of the Colts' quarterbacks.

Peyton Manning makes a last minute decision to start week 1 against Houston. Leads his team to a miraculous comeback victory on the road with virtually zero off-season practice/chemistry and the legendary saga of Peyton Manning continues. Talking heads discuss the gutsy, gritty performance for weeks. Texans fans vomit in disgust, and stop watching ESPN for months.

With two rookies starting at the tackle positions that doesnt seem so likely ...

More like this: Peyton Manning makes a foolish decision to start week one against the Texans , leaves the game in the second quarter battered and beaten , being sacked half a dozen times and knocked on his ass on virtually every passing play. Texans win a laugher.
ESPN says Peyton is courageous and places all the blame on the OL for Mannings six sacks and three int's.
ESPN gives the Texans D no credit .... as usual.

Or the Texans D gets vilified and labeled dirty because they hurt football royalty. (i.e. see Suh against the Patriots)

Would hate if if he did play and put up monster numbers and won... Cannot imagine the crap that would be said then about the Texans.. So, I would rather he just took it easy and worked his way back into the fold week 2 or later .

Being a Texan fan from the beginning this would not suprise me at all.
