Arian Foster injures hamstring again

Not sure on the severity yet but he looked like he was pissed, like he knew it was bad.

Hopefully he will be fine for game one against the Colts.

Uncle Bob doesn't think it's too serious. He's probably heard from the medical staff already i'm sure.

I don't think it was because he knew it was bad. I think it was more that he was upset that he injured it again and might miss the season opener.

The cold weather would have entered into this. Too long in there today. The length of time he was rested may seem to have been long, but it wasn't for an RB. 1 of 3 hamstring injuries will recur within about 6 months (especially) if not rehabbed properly. I would be thinking of resting him anywhere from 2-3 weeks and share play time generously when he comes back.

Tater Tots didn't look so hot tonight. Ward was OK, Obfinslkjrleksk looked OK. Actually, the running game didn't click very well tonight.

They didn't rip off huge chunks, but they moved the ball.

I think we almost had 100 yards rushing at the half.

Hmm....I guess we get spoiled with 5 plus yards per carry, but 172 yards at a 4.1 clip ain't bad.

They werent world beaters but they did more than enough to keep the 49ers defense honest ....

SF's run defense was pretty stout last season .... #6 in the NFL giving up only 3.5ypc and only 96.7 per game.

Cloak, it was mentioned during the broadcast that hamstrings are particularly tough injuries because it is difficult to gauge how the healing is progressing. What is the best way to determine when the muscle is healed?

This was predictable, and predicted. Hamstrings linger and re-aggravate.

I'll defer to Cloak on this, but if he plays on opening day, IMO, he'll re-aggravate it again.

I don't want to sound like a Debbie Downer on Foster, but I'll be surprised if this isn't a season long issue for him.

Bullpuckey.......Mr. Thorn, Sir. :D

To be serious I thought they took what was there nicely. At the end of the day I was very happy with all three.

Weird saying this but I feel pretty comfy with Tate and Ward if Foster needs more time to heal. In the history of this team, when have we had this kind of depth at any position?

Maybe go light with Foster against the Colts, especially if Manning doesn't play. We all know how their run D is, so Tate and Ward should do well.

This is probably why I said what I did. The offense as a whole, when they weren't turning over the ball, did well. We are going to find out soon enough though. Even if the offense from last year stays the same and doesn't improve any at all, an improved defense will get us more wins. I'm not ready for the kool-aid yet, but this team looks better.

Hey C&D, remember when we had a similar discussion about how 100 degree temps in Houston may have contributed to the high number of hammys among Texans' backs and some of us wondered about that because heat & humidity tend to represent favorable conditions that minimize such muscle strains ? On the other hand, I think cooler temps like last nights San Fran game are just the kind of weather elements that can cause hamstring/groin injuries ?

Here is why Foster's hamstring will be a problem all season long.

With so many threats throughout the offense, it’s conceivable the Texans could weather a Foster void. But would Foster, a former undrafted rookie free agent, allow himself to sit and temporarily cede his starting spot to someone like Tate (11 carries, 52 yards), whom the Texans liked enough and went ahead and drafted?

Plus, Foster is playing for a new contract; can he afford to be patient with this type of injury? “I think Arian understands if he performs this year, shows that he can be consistent, he’ll be rewarded,” said Texans owner Bob McNair on Aug. 10. “That’s how the game works, but you don’t do it based on one season.”

This might seem a little drastic, but I think the Texans should protect Foster from himself and put him on IR, and force him to the take the time to allow his hamstring to heal, and bring him back fresh in the middle of the season.

A popular question early in training camp was whether Foster could match or exceed last season’s statistics — 1,616 yards on the ground, another 604 (on 66 receptions) through the air.

Usually, he would just brush off the topic, emphasizing it was a new season.

But his linemen piped up, such as right tackle Eric Winston. It wouldn’t be a shame if Foster didn’t have the same sort of season, Winston reasoned, because those type of years don’t happen often.

And, he asked, who cares as long as the Texans were successful?

Which is precisely the kind of logic that makes fantasy football owners cringe.

Which is precisely why I could absolutely care less about fantasy football.:this:

Do you mean PUP him? If he goes on IR, he's done for the season.

Stand corrected, Doc. I meant PUP him. I know they won't do that, but I think, for the reasons mentioned above, he'll try to play on it before giving it a chance to heal.

What? Protect him from himself? Thats insane. He's an adult. Either he feels good enough to play or he doesn't. It will be obvious to the coaching staff if he's 100% or not.

But since when does Foster or any player decide to "allow himself to sit" or not ? Last time I checked, that call or any decision about how much or how little any player plays is made by the HC, so there's no reason to PUP Foster if Kubiak and his medical advisors feel there's a resonable chance he can play in the first 4 to 6 weeks of the RS. If not, then OK so a roster slot is freed-up.

I'm with this. I feel good going with Tate and ward against Indy. Foster lloks like last year was no fluke and I want him as healthy as possible.

Well this is definitely going to be a recurring thing with Foster this season and perhaps the rest of his career. Luckily, it looks like we will have at least 2 backs in Ward and Tate who can get the job done. Nothing you can really do with a hammy injury but to rest it, so that's just going to be something the Texans and the fans will have to deal with.

He wasn't 100% yesterday, was he? Was it obvious to the coaching staff?

Both conditions through different mechanisms can be causative. The cold can cause muscles to contract directly, or indirectly by constricting the blood vessels/flow to the muscles, while the active player forcefully will at the same time acutely stretch the muscles in opposition.........thus a strain/tear.

If you have doubt of the above muscle contractions to cold, next time look down when you get into a cold shower and see what disappears.

Sorry about your luck there, CnD. Mine may get smaller, but disappear? Um...no...:peek:

Cloak, it was mentioned during the broadcast that hamstrings are particularly tough injuries because it is difficult to gauge how the healing is progressing. What is the best way to determine when the muscle is healed?

This is indeed correct. One of the main reasons is because once any MRI changes are resolved, if there were some to begin with, you depend on the player to give you truthful feed back. Before even beginning light jogging, there should be absolutely no point tenderness in the hamstring, and no discomfort upon full stretch. For a football player that cuts and accelerated, especially against opposition, jogging, butt-kicks, or short straight ½ to ¾ effort sprints (NEVER all out until drills and ¾ effort sprints are TOTALLY pain free) are typical. If they experience ANY recurring twinges, they have to iimmediately reduce the intensity of effort. I mentioned that strain reinjury rate in football players is on the order of 30% within 6 months, but some quote it within a 3 month period. The peak prevalence classically seems to occur around 3–4 weeks following injury.

The problem in all of this is that you are dealing with "warriors," who believe that they are invisible, and that if they do not complain, they will be fine. Foster played on a bum knee last year because of fear of losing his position..........do I need to spell things out about what present concern may hold. With an already recurrent injury, I would say the very soonest that Foster should be allowed back would be 2-3 weeks........but preferably closer to 3-4 weeks or more to give him a better chance to make it through the season. (Keep in mind that we do not have information re. the exact degree of injury.) Plus if that hamstring ever tightens up whenever he does return, he must be honest with himself and take himself out of the game immediately. I will hope for that, but I do not plan on holding my breath.

From the Chronicle:

Running game update

Running back Arian Foster won't make the trip to Minnesota for Thursday's preseason finale against the Vikings because he's undergoing treatment for a hamstring injury.

"He came out today and basically did what he did yesterday, stretched with the team, did a little jogging," coach Gary Kubiak said Tuesday. "He'll stay back and rehab. All indications are (he's) heading in the right direction."

Running back Steve Slaton, who has missed the first three preseason games because of a hamstring issue, returned to practice on Tuesday.

"He needs to play, but I've got to go back and see how he did (on tape)," Kubiak said. "I'm not going to put him out there Thursday unless I really know he's ready to go."
