49'rs plan to play backups against Texans starters

Ripped from the headlines.......ok, not ripped but copied and pasted. Ripped just sounds cooler.......

Starters typically hog the spotlight in the third exhibition game, but coach Jim Harbaugh has other ideas for the 49ers. He wants his backups to see plenty of action against the Houston Texans' starters Saturday.

"The reason for that is those guys are fighting for their football life, their pro football life," Harbaugh said Thursday, "and (we) want them to have the ability to play the game, but also to see them against other starters, you know?"

The 49ers' backups are thrilled at the prospect of lengthier playing time.

"(Harbaugh) wants to see what we can do against potential starters in the regular season," wide receiver Kyle Williams said. "I love the opportunity."

Added fullback Bruce Miller: "It's going to be big for guys to go out and take advantage of this game."

That includes Alex Smith's understudies at quarterback. Smith will start and play perhaps only two series before rookie Colin Kaepernick replaces him on the first-string unit. Josh McCown also might see his first action in a 49ers uniform.

Harbaugh noted that Smith could return if situations warrant it, such as a two-minute drill, but one goal is to have Kaepernick face a starting defense. "I'd rather have Colin ready and experienced with the starters, against the (opposing) starters, in an NFL setting, before we have to get to that point. That's the idea," Harbaugh said.

Sorry, link was working and now it's fubar. I posted the jist of it.....

no problem. I don't think their starters were going to do much better anyway. But still, playing our 1s against their 2s gives everyone a false picture. I guess now the measuring stick is if we aren't leading by 42-0 at the half, we have a problem. LOL

Well, this could be an opportunity to let us know whether Kubiak has learned to put the foot in the neck when the opponents on the ground. Or, he may play it safe as well....

Edit: Gotta add, though. Even though it's preseason, it still feels kind of disrespectful that Harbaugh ain't putting the starters out there.

Opinions from the Niner's fans about this.

yeah its not like we need to wait 3 months of film watching to know what went wrong. On a side note, since they were the ones to bring it up, I'm sure we're gonna let the dogs loose. Thank you texans for the extra motivation. Now lets knock that qb out of the game =)

Look at it this way, even if we dont beat em, at least we'll beat their fans. 49ers-----><----Texans

Baaaaaa!! Who cares! He just thinks our starters are really second stringers anyway! NO respect AGAIN!! I've been a Niners fan longer than I have a TEXAN fan, but, this attitude sucks to me. Just another reason why I detest preseason games!! Maybe Kubes will rotate our 2nds more into the starting lineup to see what they can do. I just don't want anyone to get hurt, either side!

Sept 11th can't get here soon enough!!

49ers are a team full of Divas who aren't willing to work hard on the field. They only real players they have is Patrick Willis and Frank Gore. Their other "playmakers" are all divas including Vernon Divas, Michael Shittree, Dropsie Edwards.

They want to knock our QB out of the game? Classless! Even if they had a QB I wouldn't want that happening to him/her...

It's kind of scary, though... I don't know if they want a linebacker to knock Schaub out of the game, or one of their ghetto-ass fans to shoot him in the knee-cap...

Cancel the trip, Kubes!

To be fair (and not to overreact) that was a guy with only 187 posts. Nobody jumped on him for the post, nor did they support it.

I do think that if someone posted to knock a qb out of the game here (especially during a preseason game), they would get slammed by the other posters.

If I was kubiak I would not play the starters as long as be normally would.

Sorry, but we are not your practice team. Can we get a good look too?

Right? Lets put our 2nd string in as long as theirs is in.

Yah, I think you have to at least keep your starters out of it on offense... If SF is planning on playing 2s/3s/4s against our 1s that gets dangerous... You'll have those crazy back-ups trying to prove something to make the team and someone's gunna get hurt...

Some of our backups will be playing with the one's too. Reed, Mitchell, Adibi, Sharpton, etc.

I just want to get out of this game healthy. Especially our Oline. Dang near our entire 2nd Oline has been knocked out. Butler (hammy), Caldwell (ankle), Studdard (ankle)

If any of our starting Oline go down we're screwed.

This is simply about a first year head coach still learning how to evaluate players and deciding that he wanted to see how they would do against a top shelf offense. I don't think this has anything to do with disrespect or dismissing us as a lowly practice squad. Perspective, people.

Are the 9er's soooooo bad that instead of getting beat and run over they throw there 2nd string out there to get murdered?

I hear it now, "It was our second string".

Game is simply a confidence booster to Texans. This should springboard team into final ST game then into the regular season. I am hoping to start the first half of each game and therefore the season ready to go. The days of spotting the opponent 1 1/2 to 2 quarters needs to end. No injuries!

Frank Gore isn't going to be playing at all. And unfortunately, the 49ers' first team could be considered at a performance level demonstrated by the 2nds of many other teams. I do not see the reasoning of taking 3 quarters of risk with our starters for probably not getting them even as much decent game "experience" and competition as running against our own 2nds. We especially can't afford even ONE OL to go down at this point. Not a very well thought out or intelligent move in MHO.:kubepalm::wadepalm:

Like in any sport, you can't expect to get better by competing against a markedly inferior opponent.

If this happens, it will be a run-away game.

Had this been a year ago, it would be a close matchup. But this new defense, and Puddin' Boy Phillips wanting to make a statement and get his guys into a killer instinct mode? Big mistake by Harbaugh.

I really don't like that strategy. He's not doing his #2's any favors putting them against perhaps the top offense in the league, and putting his offense against a totally new, sack-producing 34 defense.

My prediction: 8 sacks, 2 interceptions, Kubiak pulling his starters at halftime instead of 3rd quarter because of a big lead, and a head coach shaking his head on the sideline. And 9er fans blowing up their message board over it.

I think he's getting Kubiak Cute on this deal, trying an idea when he should just stick with what works. Harbaugh's kids are going to get manhandled for 30 minutes. Hell, he might cut the whole 2nd string after watching it.

EDIT: I think he's protecting his 1st team. Stashing them away. He sees us with 11 sacks in two games, and he's pulling his starters to protect them. Which is fine, but still...it puts OUR coach into the position of either risking OUR 1st teamers against lesser opponents or putting our 2's out there.

This worries me I think this will be a trap game, that our starters will overlook this game and start thinking about the Vikings.

J/K, I'm worried though, I say play the starters for one drive on each side of the ball and call it a night. I don't want to knock somebody for trying something new, but really Hairball? The third game is to tune up your starters, week four is for CFL try outs........

LOL. Love the "Kubiak Cute" label. So true. And a great term for it. Usually when disaster strikes, it's because Kubiak is trying to show everyone how smart he is.

Thank you houstonspartan. You saved me some keystrokes. I was going to post the same thing. I can see why Harbaugh is going this route. Seems as though the football savvy folks here would see it for what it is as well.

I say play our No. 1s, with the exception of Schaub, and stick Leinart with the 1s. I don't like Leinart's play this preseason, AT ALL.

Schaub is going to go down sometime this season. I want to see what happens if Leinart has to come in.

Hey, am I in a time warp again???

Lets-do-the-Time-Warp-again.jpg

I think Harbaugh knows deep down that their #1's will get hammered by our #1's and is trying to conserve confidence for the fans and the players. Not a bad move for a really crappy team.

He's not disrespecting us or anything.

The idea was, according to him, for evaluation of his 2's against 1's...in case the 2's have to some day play 1's in reg season. On its face, it's a good idea.

However, I think the real reason (or at least the major reason of the two reasons) is because he doesn't want to risk hurting his 1's. Did you guys see the shots Vick was taking vs. the Browns last night? Geez. He was getting hammered. One dude form-tackled him as Vick threw the ball, and drove him into the ground. Hardcore. So, I can see where Harbaugh might think the 2's can chug out the minutes. Dual purposes.

Now it seems, according to one report on this thread, that he's now going to play his 1's against our 1's. I wonder if the Texans brass contacted the 9ers and said "WTH?" It's likely. Or, someone with the 9ers brass found out and told Harbaugh "WTH?" Likely, as well. Or, Harbaugh relented on his own.

Either way, I think it was a good idea (in theory) but poor idea in the real world. Both teams should have 1's facing 1's to simulate reg season play. If they want to cut it to 2 quarters or something, fine. But the two teams should agree to the rules of engagement and stick to it.

I don't think laying down is in Jim Harbaugh wheelhouse :wheel:

'eh, the point of playing starters for 3 quarters in this game is to get their reps up and simulate a game situation. I don't see this situation as anything other than different coaching philosophies for two teams that are at completely different places of development.

The 49ers are doing in game three what the Texans will be doing in game 4.

I just hope Kubiak doesn't play Foster for three quarters. No point in pushing it, and we've got other backs that would probably like the work out, too.

Came across this nice little preview (including pics), demonstrating some of the 49ers' running plays.

49ers vs. Raiders: Analyzing the Run Game

I don't know how much our D will be tested without Gore playing. Last year, Dixon was better known for his dancing behind the line and losses in said place.
Kendall is 5' 7" (5' 7 1/4" according to one source) and 199 is more of a scat back, who in college was thought to be lacking strength and would easily be brought down on 1st contact........and it's not like he is a burner..........4.53 40 at the combine.

Yeah, like that Steve Slaton guy. Has he played a down of RB in any of the two games so far? I don't remember seeing him.

We need Ward and Slaton out there in the first half, then split it up with OgBo/Ward/Slaton in the second half. Just my 0.02....

Kendall is going to be a fine back, gives 110% & will block with the beat of them. Be a good test regardless.

Unless it was Payton manning then we would get his super powers!!!!

Watched some of the Niners broadcast on the NFLN replay, and they were blasting Harbaugh for bringiing in the 2nd string in the 2nd quarter to face the Texans starters. Not that it made much difference, as their starters sucked, too. In fact, some of the starters might be on a short leash.

Niner fans are saying Harbaugh is just saving going very base in the preseason and is going to go all out and surprise people with his playcalling come Week 1. I remember when that use to go on here.

I guess the Niners are saving their good pass blocks for Seattle.

Some of their fans are delusional.

Like they are the only ones playing vanilla and not sending exotic blitzes.

They keep talking about harbaugh not caring about the outcome and just wanting to evaluate players, but how in the he'll can you get evaluations off of that game they played last night?

The only eval I saw from their side was a whole lot of suck.
