I don't know if anyone else here has read all of the various articles posted lately at the Chronic and the Texans sites, but I have and I'm very happy with what I'm hearing. The post-Palmer era sounds as if its getting off to the right start. Of course there are reasons for the articles to be slanted, especially from the Texans official board writers. But what is most telling for me are the comments from players themselves:
"It's been a nice change as far as the intensity he brings," Carr said Tuesday about Pendry. "You're accountable for everything. Nothing slips through the cracks with him."
"I kind of feel like I'm back in college again."
"The relationship was like two friends," Carr said about Palmer. "Joe's not really friends with anybody. He doesn't care what people think about him."
Andre Johnson: "Practice has changed, period, since he's become the offensive coordinator. And he calls you out when you mess up."
Steve McKinney said Were going to call our plays and go out there and run them. Let the chips fall where they may.
Pendry: "It's always been my belief that the passing game is protection-driven," he said. "It's not receiver-driven or quarterback-driven. So I guess that's what we're working on the most.
"There are a lot of factors when it's protection-driven: depth of the route. Are you at the right spot? Is the quarterback dropping right? Is the back protecting? If you don't get it (pass) off, it doesn't matter how pretty we are."
They (need to) feel comfortable about, 'We know what to do. We know how to do it. We're going to do it, and let's be as physical as we can be.' "
I don't see us going to the Super Bowl because of this small but much-needed change, but I see a lot of things that we've pointed out being addressed. Carr still needs to be coached, keep things simple until you learn to execute them perfectly, be more physical than the other team, etc., etc. It all seems so simple and such common sense, but yet we were not getting any of that with Palmer here.
