How would you fix college football?

I was contenplating this and I came up with what I think is a good plan. Not sure if its legally possible but what the hell, it should be. You always hear of cases in college football about universities that get punished for wrong doing in the past and inevitably its the wrong student-athletes that get punished. What I was thinking is, each player has to sign a contract before he accepts his scholorship stating he will not accept any illegal payments while playing for their respective universties and if he does the university has a right to bring forth a lawsuit against them to recover damages the university might recieve in the form of penalties they would recieve from the NCAA. Now, the university, if found guilty of any major infractions should then forfeit any money they recieved as a result of any post season bowls they might have appeared in. My plan would hold accountability at both the student-athlete and university levels. A player might think twice about taking money from a booster knowing that once he starts playing in the NFL and making big bucks the university could come after some of it for penalties they recieved as a result of his actions. My two cents, how would you fix it?
 
Not a bad idea and yes it would be legal. I like holding the University responsible for any infractions they are aware of and taking money from them, it's the only thing that universities will ever understand. I'd also like to see the NCAA use the death penalty on some of the major universities like Ohio St, USC, etc.. for a couple years as an example to the others. Hitting them hard in the pocket book is the only thing the schools will ever understand. Unfortunately it will never happen since their is way to much money and influence involved here.

Not bad. I would add that all parties will be treated the same. If a player does something he is suspended. I would suspend the coach, the Athletic director, and the school too.

When a player wants to leave a D1 program for another he must sit out 1 full year. I would make the same rule for coaches. If you want to transfer, fine, but you sit out a year.

Also, when a coach is fired but has serious allegations brought against them, they are suspended at their new job as well. No more, running out of town to escape the heat.

I can't take credit for this since a guy on the radio brought it up:

1. Any coach that knowingly violates the rules gets the death card .... can't coach at the NCAA level for (he said life, but I think 5 years would be more workable.).

2. Players who knowingly violates the rules get the same thing and are not elegible for the NFL/NBA etc. for three years from the violation date.

3. The AD, President etc if they knowingly cover up knowledge of discretions are also banned from the NCAA level for 5 years.

This puts the reponsaibility and PUNISHMENT on those who actually did the deed.

With all the social media stuff and the internet investigative media types, the odds of keeping stuff quite and swept under the rug would be slim and the coaches and player would think long and hard about violating the rules.

Issue will be what to do after the graduate and are in the league. Still can spank the coaches and management types though.
 
Hell if I know .... Pay the players ? They are already getting paid in the form of scholarships .... Take the $$ and TV deals out of the game ? Get rid of all the corporate sponsorships .....
 
I think the NCAA should stop policing the programs. Let the higher profile players or any players get what they can. If a booster wants to give him 5K then so what? I know, you think he is in the boosters pocket now. Might tank a game or something. #1 that could already be happening. #2 its the coaches choice to bench the kid if he is playing bad or figure that out. Let the higher profile athletes get paid for appearances.

I think the NCAA knows that they have these athletes that have NFL aspirations by the cajones. There is no chance of getting into the NFL without playing college ball. Even though college football is no longer a amateur sport. It is just as big as the NFL but with 100 times the teams and players to keep clean. It is an impossible task and there is no solution to make it the way it was.

I doubt Cam Newton, Dez Bryant, or Jacory Harris give 2 shits about a college degree, or a scholarship. They probably didnt even go to class. So I think the school owes them a refund. My guess is the coaches dont even make them go to class. Both the coaches and players probably considered it a waste of time.
 
College football is the biggest scam out there. The cheapest tickets to a Longhorns game is $75. Guess where I sat? In the absolute highest row on the upperdeck of the stadium. One of the worst seats in the entire stadium. Consider this... the cheapest ticket to a Texans game is $35. Its absurd how schools are allowed to rape their fans. Disgusting.

Supply and demand. On a down year tickets are less. On a NC year they are more. And there are alot of people who want to attend UT games. I am sure a UH game is more affordable.
 
I'm not going to speak on the corruption stuff, because the NCAA is like the Soviet Union. BUT, as a football fan who doesn't like college football, this is what I would do to make the whole thing worth a damn.

I maintain that the best way to fix all this conference/bowl/playoff/ranking/BCS crap is to divide all the teams into 30 team leagues. Figure out a way to divide, either by preseason ranks or whatever. Top league would have the top programs, then you work your way down. Play the season like you would play in a normal league. Might be too many games for that though, whatevever. Then you have a relegation system. Top 4 jump up, bottom 4 go down. Top 8 in each have a tournament deciding a champion.

I know it's drastic, but its the only way this stuff will work, and it would make it a helluva lot more organized. It would also be super entertaining. You can keep the bowls and bowl names, each "league" would have a ton of intrigue and it would stop the games you know USC is going to be Whogivesashit State 75-3.

Too bad it'll never happen. Could you imagine the matchups every week, though?

That would be a terrible setup. These players aren't entertainers, they are Student Athletes! Academics comes first! :fingergun:

How bout they owe the school - or the people who funded that scholarship a refund .... Why bother calling it a scholarship or wasting the classroom space.


Give that scholarship to someone who will put it to good use.

All we hear about is the rising cost of secondary education yet these universities are raking in hundreds of millions ....

Our society is flawed in this aspect.

I think you misunderstood my post. Try reading it again. Then, you will see my post is the only sure way to fix college football.
 
The answer is simple, but people don't like it - remove all pretense from college football. Stop pretending it's anything but what it actually is.
 
Doesn't Texas have a criminal statute now that makes paying college athletes etc punishable by jail time?

Some Football Coach or Booster doing a couple of years in the TDC might send a strong message.

yep. Just imagine how much Texans tickets would be if they were to win multiple championships.

The owners keep saying if we don't get salaries in line ticket prices must rise.

Surely if NFL players were unpaid the NFL would cost as little as a CFB game.
