I want to see more of TJ Yates

I know he played with the 3rd string tonight, but I was impressed with his poise and awareness. I wasn't very impressed with Lienart just dumping the ball off.

Where can I see highlights of TJ Yates in the 2nd half? NFL network and ESPN only have 1st half clips.

yates won me over with his schaub impersonation ... touch and accuracy. leinart looked too much like carr to me - line drive dumpoffs. kubiak can scheme leinart into jake plummer, but that's the highest complement i can give.

yates has a lot of growing to do, and wont be NFL ready for a season or two, but he gave a good impression in that first game with the way he throws the ball and "his ability to make each throw". this is a phrase tossed around too much. jamarcus russell can bomb it 80 yards, but he cant "make each throw". chad pennington can ... and in the smallest of samplings it looks as if yates can as well.

I agree. felt like Yates played better than Leinert and would like to see how yates plays with the number twos

Yates might be my favorite draft pick this year. The defensive picks were an absolute must, and I'm optimistic about them, but I really like Yates as a long-term sleeper.

Yates looked really good, i like hows he's not afraid to throw it down the field, he nearly had townsel on that long route where he was wide open but over threw him which would of been a sure TD, then the one to Jean. The boy impressed me. Hope he continues to grow.

Im much more confident in Yates than what we had last season at the #2 spot in .... Dan Iranouttaboundski.

Hopefully he can displace Lienart (asking a lot).... and we dont have to worry about a lefty QB.

In college, Yates improved dramatically over the years. He has a history of showing growth. I hope he can continue that trend.

Put me on this ship as well, even if it was against lesser competition, Yates looked good out there for a rookie QB with a shortened amount of time to get acclimated to the offense, team, and NFL life in general. And I feel like he accomplished that by just playing football, not overthinking it or anything, just going out there and making throws he knows he's made before.

Is he good enough to be the backup? No. Next year? Probably not as well. But he's a good prospect and it's always good to have someone in line for the future.

On that note, I also don't have faith in Leinart to be the guy we go to if Schaub goes down. He's our best bet as a number two, but fingers crossed we don't have to rely on him to make our first ever playoff appearance.

BTW - first post! Excited to be on here.

I was also impressed by the small sampling of TJ Yates on Monday. He's young and has a long ways to go but from what I saw, I was impressed with his field presence and the fact that he didn't look terrified and didn't make mistakes. Now he might look equally terrible next week but that's all part of the growing process. Hopefully Kubiak can turn Yates into a serviceable QB and then we can trade him for picks a couple years from now.

I thought Yates showed continued growth & substantial improvement the more reps he got. I know this is not going to happen but sit Schaub & lets see who the better QB is. Leinart or Yates. My money is on Yates :money:

I hope, we can groom TJ to a legit starter material guy in 4-5 yrs. Won't it be nice to have a home grown QB?

GO TJ!!!
GO TEXANS!!!

He just needs to be ready to displace Leinart in two years when Leinart's contract runs out. There is still plenty of time for that.

This was my thought. He did look good out there and had the poise that is needed to be a great QB. Is he there yet? No, but really who would expect him to be? Two weeks...c'mon now!

But I'm confident that given two years to learn from Schaub he will become a great back up and our QB for the future. I was a little disappointed when they drafted him but I completely see why now.

(Just noticed this is post 1K for me!!)

Yep. I liked Yates as well, but he's got a ways to go. I wonder if he'll continue to improve during pre-season and keep everyone exicited, or will we find out he just simply had one good night?

We're probably not going to see a whole lot more of him until the 4th pre-season game. The next two games (if historical patterns are followed) will be mostly Schaub starting for a few possessions, then Leinart most of the rest of the game.

I think Leinart played how he was told to, cautiously & don't do anything stupid. He, unlike Danny O., realizes the value of learning from Kubiak and ended with 2 year deal. If he continues, Matt can see his career resurrected in Houston. Yates could be the starter in 3 years if not trade bait.

I really hope this kid works out, and eventually becomes a great QB for us. Another thing, Yates is my Mother's maiden name so I would love me a T.J. Yates jersey.

Per Rotoworld:

Coach Gary Kubiak suggested Thursday that rookie T.J. Yates could supplant Matt Leinart as the Texans' No. 2 quarterback this season.

"He's got the ability, he's got the arm, he's got the brains, all those things," said Kubiak of Houston's fifth-round pick. "Just needs reps." Yates simply hasn't gotten enough practice snaps to overtake Leinart before the season, but this is confirmation that the Texans remain high on the former North Carolina Tar Heel. Yates has appeared in two preseason games, completing 6-of-12 passes for 97 yards. He's a deep Dynasty league sleeper.

That's just Kubiaks way of trying to motivate Leinart and Yates, it ain't going to happen. The Texans are going to try and showcase Leinart during the preseason and season and then try to trade him off for some picks. That's why we signed him to a 2 yr. deal. I would like to see Yates get some snaps with the 1's, he's looked good with the 2's and 3's but he's also been going against the other teams 2's and 3's. Let's see what he looks like against real defensive starters and with real O-line protection for a 2-3 series. He's probably not ready to step up to the big time, but we won't know unless we give him a chance.
