Attendance and Noise

The Texans posted attendance numbers at 70,511 for last night's game..........paid-for seats. The true attendance at least appeared to be somewhere between 2/3rd and 1/2 of that. What I found most amazing, though, being there at the game was that for most all of the game, the fan noise was quite anemic. By the time the last 2 minutes of the game came around, there looked to be only several thousand fans left in their seats. In those last 2 exciting minutes, those loyal fans made the stadium virtually as loud as I've heard at any game during the regular season. Fans were banging on the seats, smacking on the programs, stomping on the floors, and all the while cheering at the top of there lungs. It was a great feeling to be a Texans fan! Today my voice is gone! :texflag:

I noticed that as well. I found it was embarrassing we were so empty at kick off. I heard the traffic was a nightmare, but c'mon man! It was our only prime-time game!

Get there early, be loud

Preseason. Not that many people are going to care about the third stringers, as people who spend their time on this forum do.

The most excitement I've seen yet was the pats game 9-7.

Those stands were electric, colts last year at home was pretty good..just wasn't that tension of maybe playoffs in the air

Wouldn't doubt it, the colts do it after all.

I thought the crowd noise was a bit out of proportion to the actual number of people in the stands, especially late in the game.
The noise was pretty loud in the 4th qtr, but I didn't really notice anyone around me cheering that much, TBH.

I am not a screamer. I get excited when big plays happen and I will scream on occasions, but I am not standing the whole game yelling at the field. It's just not me.

I was kind of close to where the fights were happening and it irritated me...I'm trying to watch the game and all these people want to stand up and see a freaking almost fight...

I like to actually watch the game and analyze the action on the field...

Just a personal gripe........but I'm really beginning to hate all the loud audio-visual adds and promotions they are running on the big screens. Whatever happened to some decent "spirit-inspiring" music once in awhile during breaks........not 10 second snippets and the rest raucous annoyance? There.....I've ranted!:pissed:

I would have rated the max attendance at 3/4's full. Yes people got there late. We almost never do but did last night because our normal commute time is about 20 minutes and last night it was 1:35. People did leave early and the noise level was down but it is preseason after all. Folks should remember a lot of season ticket holders give their preseason tickets away often to folks not near as enthusiastic as themselves. From the strange faces around me I was hearing all sorts of questions back and forth like "who is the big white dude standing next to Mario?"

I mentioned this same thing in Gary's post. It did seem really loud in the 4th qtr, but you could have fooled me that it wasn't the fans making the noise. Everyone left in my section was going nuts which is a very rare occurance in the 500's. Most of the time you'd think people had showed up to watch a movie with the way the sit there motionless and occasionally glare at you for making noise.

That was my impression also.

I'm convinced that Reliant uses piped-in crowd noise at times.

I have no doubt about it. The 2-14 season proved it to me. We'd be losing a blowout game in the 4th, and with every first down they'd turn on the "that's another Houston Texans first down!" chant with crowd noise. There couldn't have been 5,000 people at the end of some those games, and nobody was yelling for that crappy team, but the crowd noise was there.

They actually test the crowd noise volume it if you get to the stadium early enough, too.

Same here, I don't understand the yelling and screaming the WHOLE game, I help make noise at "key" moments..... but over all....

Every game I go to I try and save my voice and hands (clapping, smacking seat in front) for the next day, NEVER works though, so I make my fair share of noise.

I may not be the loudest, but even the moments I sit quietly, I never glare at people making noise, Hell, NOISE is the atmosphere of ANY sport, excluding golf, but thats not a sport, its a hobby.

Its like going to a bar and complaining about cig. smoke in the room, its a bar.... who the hell goes to a bar for "healthy living" not expecting these things?

As long as the noise makers aren't interfering with my enjoyment of the game (IE: Claiming I'm not a fan if I don't make noise even through half time) I couldn't care less.

Kind of a tangent, but if you are (or know) a season ticket holder who doesn't care about going to the game, try giving the preseason tickets away to someone who wouldn't normally be able to go, and might be even more enthusiastic than you.

(warning to Cowboys haters: I grew up a Cowboys fan, and am still one, though not as much as I used to be...) I remember as a kid when someone gave us two tickets to see a Cowboys preseason game. It was a really big deal for me to go with my dad (I would not have ever been able to go to a regular season game), and I didn't even care that it was "only" preseason - I was getting to go to a Cowboys game, at Texas Stadium! Even though I don't know who it was who gave us those tickets, I'm still grateful 30 years later.

From the games I have seen on TV so far most are pretty much 3/4 or less full. It's the preseason, unless it's the Cowboys or the Saints, 3/4 isn't too bad.

I'm hoarse today, I only yell and make noise when we are on defense, when were on offense I only yell when we make a first down or score a touchdown.

One thing that's really loud is when you bang those aluminum Bud Light bottles on the railing, it's annoying, but it's pretty loud.

I was at the game and moved down to the 2nd row behind the end zone with about 5 minutes and people were going crazy at the end. I was right behind the guys banging against the wall, banging it so hard one of the cheerleaders standing 5 feet away turned around and had this scared look on her face at how loud of a noise it was making. I thought there was a solid buzz going around the whole stadium for the most part but the end was definitely the most intense and there really were not that many people left at that point

I was thinking the same thing. I was clapping and shouting, but I looked around and no one in my or the adjacent rows were making a peep. Probably past their bedtime. But the noise was very noticeable. I would have never thought that noise was pumped into Reliant. I'm pretty sure now, that it is.

Dude, there are times to raise hell and there are times to be so quiet you could hear a mouse fart. I like to think I raise plenty of hell at the appropriate times and I act like every snotty little punk ass trick around me the rest of the time. Well, not exactly but you get my point.

Well, I've been making NOISE at football games since I was 6 yr's old, and I turned 66 today! SOOOOO, been making noise for 60 yrs, and I don't intend to stop! That's part of the FUN in going to a football game. If I wanted "quiet time," I would stay at home!! I guess I'm a perfect member for the Bullpen, cause I can't keep my mouth shut! YES, I sport a sore throat today, and my voice kinda sucks, BUT, by gawd I did my part in letting my football team know I support them!

As for attendance, I'm not unhappy with the attendance at all. Been to every preseason game since the beginning, and this was one of the best. Preseason is always lethargic, it's that "who cares" attitude, but, it also gives us a good feel for what's to come on Sept 11th. Reliant will ROCK AND ROLL that day, and I can't wait!!
