Kubiak Out Preseasoned??

I may have to eat a lot of crow, but our 1st preseason game looked weak at best with our starters in. We looked outcaoached...again. Unprepared and unmotivated. It truly seems that Rex Ryan preaches "Super Bowl" to his team while Kubes preaches "make the team". It just seems like a totally different energy level. There ain't no way the Jets have more talent than us. The just have more attitude and an expectation to win.

Sounds like you're buying what the ESPN announcers are selling. All they talk about is how great the Jets are. If I recall they only scored 3 in the entire first half. After the first series the defense really took off and showed what they had. 4 SACKS in the first half how is that not being prepared???????

they looked flat.

AJ on the outside opens things up, no foster,no tate, very very little ward.

offense should be fine

no joseph, no cushing.. defense looked better (competitive) but still needs work

special teams sucked

lets see what they have, 1st preseason game, it was sloppy

Schaub killed a few drives with his errant throws, but overall I was impressed with our first unit. Definitely didn't "suck" like you seem to think...

Am I missing something?

I have been fairly impressed. We haven't been perfect by any means, but there's been some decent work tonight. Lienhart appeared to do well in the pocket, Watt looked decent, Mr. Irrelevant (too lazy to look up the spelling of his name) looked decent.

What am I missing?

Got some film to evaluate.

Time for players to get coached up.

No worries.

It was pretty darn fun to watch. :doot:

Typical Jet troll....

Walk away troll....

I think your expectations were WAY too high.

1. We didn't give the game away. In fact, thanks to Dobbins and Braman (and Reed, to an extent) the defense allowed Yates and Lestar Jean to get us the win. 16 teams lost their first preseason game. We didn't. And the Texans are always accused of not finishing games. So, my question is this: "We finished the game. We won. But it doesn't matter because we looked sloppy at times?" Every time has rust. No team ran down the field with their first teamers for four quarters and poured on 72 points or something. Every teams has things to work on. Oh yeah, before I forget to throw this in there, that guy named Keo sucks BIG TIME. A 5th rounder who should have been an UDFA, IMO. Cut him before his arm tackling infects EVERYBODY on our team.

2. Did you see the 2nd teamers work? The 2nd team defense was almost constantly winning the battles in the trenches and in the secondary. Depth was a big concern for us, on defense, but I thought they looked really good.

3. We had two RBs; no, actually we had ONE running back and he is like buried on the depth chart. No Foster. Very little Ward. OgBo got 90% of the carries, and pretty much played the entire game. He scored two TDs, one rushing and one receiving. Not bad against what is known as a tough Rex Ryan "You won't run on us" defense. Pffft. We did, with a guy named OgBo.

4. No Andre Johnson. Very limited Schaub, OD, KW, the guys we rely on heavily. Schaub, to me, was just trying to not get hurt. And I can't blame him. He was gingerly prancing around and avoiding holding onto the ball too long. In reg season, he's going to hold the ball and calm down. I'm sure of it.

5. In the secondary, no J Joseph. Very limited Manning. Kareem jackson was almost always close to his man in coverage, making tackles when the receiver would pull in the ball. Last year, he was in the bottom right or left corner of the TV screen and the receiver was in the middle of the screen. I still don't like his instincts, but he stuck to his man and made what I felt were pretty good tackles.

6. The secondary contested passes like I never saw last year. Even the 2nd teamers did this. D-line was batting down passes.

-----------

-1. Special Teams sucked. HORRID. Joe Ma might not have a job after this season. His crew could be a very glaring weak spot, and might cost us a game or two. I don't know if revised kickoff rules, such as not being able to run a wedge blocking formation on kickoffs, has hurt him. But last year was awful, and tonight looked JUST like last year. It seemed Joe Ma's squad was always consistently good from year to year, while our offense or defense fluctuated--You knew Joe Ma's special teamers would be out there getting THEIR job done every game. Not anymore. It's the weakest link. BIG TIME. And that sucks, because I am a huge Joe Marciano fan.

-2. Mario was way outside, playing contain or something. Don't know if this is intentional, by Wade Phillips, to smokescreen how we might use him in reg season (I can see why it COULD be so) but still, you want to see Mario get his legs underneath himself and get some momentum NOW. I hope he picks i tup vs. the Saints.

-3. Schaub was erratic. He knew it, too. I know it. You know it. He just has to come back out and play better and make completions. He should be throwing easy strikes--5-yard curls, Slants, RB dumpoffs, lots of stuff that are SURE completions and get him in a rhythm out there.

-4. Run defense can be a little thin in the middle sometimes. We knew this was bound to happen with a 3-4.

-------------------

Guys I think were knocked, on here, during camp, but did pretty good tonight:

1. Brooks Reed. Not SUPERMAN, but he still showed that he can get to the QB and he doesn't quit. Knocked down a pass or two, as well, IIRC.

2. Kareem Jackson. Also NOT Superman, but I didn't see him royally screw the pooch either. Was seemingly always close to his man, and was not blowing tackles like that guy named Keo did. Gawd he sucks.

-------------------

Guys who look VERY promising, keeping in mind that they played 2nd and/or 3rd teamers:

1. Uh, yeah: Bryan Braman. He's a Brahman Braman Bull. The best clip is where he splits TWO d-lineman, bull rushing right through both of them, and knocks down the backup QB.

2. Lestar Jean. #18 could be REALLY good if he keeps on like that. Soft hands, and pulled down the ball with two guys fighting for the ball with him. Didn't freak out and drop it. Didn't push off his man and get flagged. Just turned, spotted it, and soft-handed it into a goal line catch that sets up the game winning TD by OgBo. And had a beautiful leaping grab of a slant, earlier, that was a nice soft-handed catch.

3. Dobbins. VETERAN leadership. He knew damn well the Jets were going to try and run out the clock by running on all 3 downs with 4 minutes left in the game. He and Braman and Reed held that defense together, and effin' Keo tried to undo all of it. Gawd, Keo is awful. Just cut that guy tomorrow. Make an example out of him.

4. Yates. All things considered, when was the last time you enjoyed watching our rookie 3rd string QB in his first ever game in the NFL? He misfired some passes, but still threw a beauty to Lestar Jean at the end. Two beauties, actually.

-----------------

Wade Phillips, affected by the lockout, seems to have the guys buying into his system. I never really saw the guys look bewildered or frustrated. Not everything looked like smooth poetry in motion out there. However, it wasn't a train wreck. And considering all the rookies and UDFAs who played tonight for Wade...he has to be tickled that he has what he has. The draft and the UDFAs on defense are making the transition easier than I thought it would be. It feels like the Texans coaches and front office really kicked into high gear on the defense side of the ball this year. I'm impressed.

Kubiak used bootlegs to perfection tonight. He abused Rex Ryan with them. I noticed we went HEAVY on passing with Yates, most likely trying to (a) not get OgBo hurt, and (b) to get a look at him AND the young UDFA WRs out there. I liked it. It meant several 3-and-outs, but this preseason has to be used to see what guys do in the closest thing to a "real game" they can get.

Rackers nailed his kicks. The kickoff and punt return sucked donkey balls.

All in all, nobody was injured badly. We won. They lost. Rex Ryan's comments at the podium, postgame, were telling. He was pissed off and felt they played poorly. Kubiak and Wade are gonna' chew some ass tomorrow, for sure. Our center blew his block by trying to help out the LG...that led to our QB hurrying a throw and missing his man. Special teams stuff. Keo and his band of arm tacklers who almost blew the game for us.

I drank a beer, ate great food, watched us play on national TV, watched us win, watched UDFAs kick some Jets ass all over the field. It was fun, for me.

Yep. They really kicked our asses.

Oh.

Wait.

They didn't.

and David Carr led the NFL in pass completion percentage in 06...stats can be skewed....

if it smells like a troll, and post like a troll...well then....

I'm talking about his 3500+ posts on this board. You think he has posted here 3500+ times just as a troll? I think you're either playing stupid, or you are.

I thought that was the most fun I have ever had watching a preseason game. Mostly cus I our defense was kicking ass and flying around.

7 sacks? Really?

This is the first preseason game I have ever watched were the next day we dont have someone saying that we didn't have a pass rush and then the argument ensues with "It's only preseason."

Bring on them Saints. Can't wait for Saturday.

When the Jets got the ball with 4 minutes to go, I like how the MNF guys were all, "This is what you want to see... you've got your offense out there to close down the game. Let's see how the running game, blah, blah, blah, keeps the Texans off the field...."

Then we get the ball back shortly & they're like, "This is what you want to see. The Jets are a defensive team. This will give them an opportunity to hold the Texans off..... "

Funny little bitches.

I know, they are really biased. We all know that winning will solve that crap, so I hope they keep the ball rolling in the right direction.

Here's the thing for me. When it came down to the nut cuttin' in the 4th quarter and we took the lead with time running out, I paused the TV, looked at my wife and said,"This is a microcosm of our entire season last year. We take the lead late in the game, only to have our defense blow it at the end. If we can hold on and win this game, it could go a long ways in building this team's confidence level." You guys make think it's only preseason, but winning is a habit. If they would have lost that game, how many of those players would have thought "here we go again, it's the same old **** as last year!" But that isn't the case today. The team found a way to win and that's what matters. I think it's huge for the confidence of the team and helping them buy into the new defensive system. I have high hopes for our defense this year. I'm not thinking top 5, but I wouldn't be shocked if they're #10 or so.

That was the whole game. I think they had 4 positive comments about the Texans the whole game. Every sack was, "boy that (insert offensive postion here) really blew his coverage" instead of "Damn, that (insert one of the people who made or had a hand on a sack) really blew throught the line".

I was really getting annoyed. Oh well, let them doubt us and we'll show them this year!!

In the "What Do You Expect to See" thread you posted this...
I'm looking at the D as a whole. I expect to see some mistakes and growing pains. As long as they don't keep making the same mistakes over and over, I'll be happy.
I expect Ward to have a big game since he's going against his old team.
I'm really excited about seeing the young WR's. Since all reports say that Leinart is having an excellent camp, we could see some very good production from the 2nd team passing game.
:fans::fans::fans:

The D as a whole looked fairly decent. No making the same mistakes over & over again. I can see you being disappointed at Ward getting hurt - we all are. I can see you being disappointed at the WR showing. But I put that on the QBs (and perhaps the Jets' DBs) as much as anything. Leinart graded out with a B to B- IMO. So you ought to be good with his performance.

I just don't get this "Out Pre-Seasoned" mumbo-jumbo. Outcoached HOW? There were no glaring timeout miscues or tossing the replay flag when he shouldn't or not tossing it when he should have. He called a good offensive game plan against Feet Boy errr, Fat boy and his world-renouned defense. So what, specifically, do you mean.

Didn't you sign off and go to sleep before we won the game.

LOL.....

She only acts like she cares to appease me. She was actually looking through some magazines and not paying much attention to the game. It was the same thing to her as if I would have just paused the game, leaned over, and said, "pull my finger."

I was pretty drunk when I started this thread and was really being more of a smartazz than anything else. What started out as a half-azzed rant against Kubiak's leadership got a little carried away. Hell, it even earned me a neg rep from Marcus. And he didn't even post anything in the the thread.
EDIT: As to what I specifically getting at is the lackluster starts to games we keep having. Like I said, I got a little carried away with the keyboard.

yeah agree, and the running back who played the WHOLE game just plain and simply isn't very good, our at least don't have good vision, he would get the ball run up the middle with his eyes down, he had many cut back lanes that he never took advantage of. Our maybe he just hasn't picked up the zone blocking scheme yet, either way i wasn't impressed with him.

And you're right about the lackluster start. Every other thread seems to have something negative about Mario in it but what about Schaub. Schaub isn't playing an entirely new position. Schaub isn't learning a totally new offense. Yet he pretty much stunk it up and no one, I mean NO ONE has said a word about trading or cutting him.

And what about Mr. 100-tackles/year DeMeco. He played the same number of snaps with the ones as Mario, yet he didn't even show up on the stat sheet; no tackles, no assists, no passes defended, nothing. [in the interest of full disclosure, neither did Mario but never mind that :D]

My point is, if we (and not just you DocBar, all of us) are going to critique harshly, then we ought to be fair enough to grade everyone with the same intense scrutiny.

I see where you're coming from, but it was the guys who we likely won't see on Sundays that closed it out. What exactly did this do for the starters? They weren't on the field to "win it".

All in all, it WAS a preseason game. Our 3rd stringers came from behind and then held off their 3rd stringers. I guess that's something, but I don't see how that's the team learning how to win. Those guys won't be playing on Sundays.

both 1st, 2nd and 3rd string learned the same offense and defense. so i think it does help us, it shows us that wade has really helped this defense even if it was 3rd string.

The really stupid(on my part) thing is that I was defending the WR's and TE's on the gameday thread. They aren't going to lay out for passes in PS game 1.
I wasn't overly impressed by our D. I think they showed the normal growing pains of learning a new system, but there were an awful lot of missed tackles. Maybe it was a case of the 1's going through the motions and trying not to get hurt. Make sure they have their spots and assignments down, but don't really mix it up too hard.I dunno. I'm just thinking with a keyboard.

Oh I'm 100% with you on the missed tackles. And that has nada to do with learning a new defensive scheme. Breaking down, aiming at the waist (and not the damned head), making hard contact and wrapping up is fundamental football. That's done no matter what scheme you're in. Wade's scheme put them in position to make plays and a lot of the time guys just flat-a$$ whiffed on the tackle. No excuse for that. None.

He's been on this team since September of last year. If he doesn't know the scheme yet I wouldn't mind them cutting him loose. He did good receiving, but I wasn't too impressed with him running the ball yesterday.

I think the fact that he only threw fives passes says it all. He completed two of them & another two hit off the WR's hands. While those two incompletion's weren't perfectly thrown balls they were definitely catchable IMO.

I was floored that both teams seemed to really really care about winning. That's not usually a good sign for a team in preseason. However with last yrs suck-tastic defense and slow first-half offense, I guess even in preseason you look to change that and, well......try and win!!! Holy runon sentence batman!!!:mariopalm:

Considering the Jets have been to the AFC championship game 2 years running, does that speak worse of them?

Don't see how it's any different than any other year for any team. You play and coach to win, just with lesser players at the end.
