By not reporting to training camp today, Titans holdout RB Chris Johnson surrendered getting an accrued season toward free agency.

What a numb nuts. No way to win for holdouts anymore.

lol, that guy is a colossal moron. I feel bad for people who already drafted him in fantasy leagues. Dumb dumb dumb...

So he can still play this season, but now he won't get a year closer to free agency? This new CBA kicks ass!

I don't understand.

Even though he'll have played four years at the end of this season, they'll treat him as if he's only played 3?

Even if he shows up & plays from day 1 of the regular season?

Why would the players agree to that?

Because holdouts are stupid and 99.9% of NFL players don't hold out. He's still on his rookie deal, he needs to play it out and then hit free agency or get an extension.

That's actually been a part of the CBA for several years now. Although, I think it was later in the previous CBA, I could be wrong about that.

He has 2 years left on his contract. Even if he plays this year, hw will still not be a FA till 2013.

How do we know they haven't offered a really good deal and he is demanding an unreasonable amount?

We really don't know for sure. Only what has been presented by the media. They're saying the titans will refuse to negotiate with him until he shows up to camp.

If that is the case I think Titan brass is acting in an understandable way. IIRC he is holding out on a contract he renegotiated last year (!). I mean, enough CJ, play out the freaking thing and do what you have to do when the contract is really up.

Right now that may be their stance but I would lay money down that between his 2000 yd season and now they have had negotiations. He has been asking for a new contract.

A player can ask the team to pay him more money at anytime. CJ has to honor the contract as much as the teams honor the contracts. Zilch. CJ has the leverage. He IS their team. And he is young. This tactic doesnt work if you are old and a backup. If the Titans want any chance of winning games this year then they will have to sign CJ to more money.

Players have to strike while the iron is hot. They cant wait until they are playing well and their contract is up, because that rarely happens.

The Titans were about 7 million under the cap at the end of last week. They've picked up Hasselbeck for 9 million. And Johnson wants about 11 million. Bud is probably having to go through therapy figuring out how he is going to get through this with his wallet in tact.:kitten:

Agreed, no doubt. I remember last season he did something similar and ended up working something out (like the fellas mentioned above).

Eh, who knows what going on with them.

"Stupidist thing I ever seen an athlete do." signed Ricky Williams.

"Yeah, me too!" signed Mike "ear muffin" Tyson.

Take however long you need Chris. Take your time getting back. Dey need Chris Johnson, Chris Johnson don't need dem!

Tuesday is a key date in the NFL for contract holdouts, but it won’t speed up running back Chris Johnson’s return to the Titans. He remains in Orlando working out, and indications are he still has no plans to report to training camp any time soon.

His holdout reached 11 days on Monday.

“Being he is our best player and we are getting close to the season, you try not to think about it,” safety Chris Hope said. “He is an important piece to our locomotive. But I support him and understand his point. No one blames him.”

Eagles receiver DeSean Jackson on Monday reported to his team a day before Tuesday’s deadline for earning a fourth year of service toward free agency. That date doesn’t mean anything to Johnson since he still has two years left on his contract. So he has no incentive to get a fourth year of service for free agency since his contract would still have a year remaining.
Under the new CBA, teams have had the option of fining holdouts $30,000 per day since the club’s official reporting day for training camp. But Reinfeldt was not definitive on whether the Titans have been fining Johnson and or Cortland Finnegan.

The Titans implode.

Let's list all the things that have gone wrong with them.

1. Vince Young drama, ending in VY getting released from the team.

2. Jeff Fisher has a squabble with Bud Adams. Fisher is gone.

3. First-year head coach.

4. Their best WR (Britt) is a monthly star on the TV show Cops.

5. Their new starting QB is a guy who couldn't hang with Seattle.

6. The leprechaun has left the building, taking his Lucky Charms with him.

7. Chris Johnson twitched his way out of camp, too.

8. Their defense is a shell of its former self.

Could end up being THE worst team in the NFL this year, especially if they do not have Finnegan and Chris Johnson. The team chemistry has to feel awkward right now.

I'm not counting them out, yet.

Hasselbeck can still get it done and this is his swan-song. They could be a lot tougher than people give them credit for.

I HOPE they totally implode and go TITs up but...

Yep, I like their chances at getting Luck with the 1st pick in the draft next year. I think I'm the only one on this board who picked them to do so. The Titans will be 2 easy wins for the Texans this year, which is good news for us. However, if they get Luck, then we will have the next Peyton Manning in our division, which could begin the next decade of Texans suffering...

Munchak will keep that from happening.

Munchak will keep that from happening.

By going out there and playing in the games himself?

If Cowher or some other vet HC was taking over that team, I might agree. And I will say that anything IS possible, I agree on that.

But man oh man, their backs are not against the wall. They are EMBEDDED into the wall.

I gotta' go with GP on this one. The Titans are imploding. Slug Adams is reaping what he sowed, and I hope Titans fans choke on that chicken bone of losing.

Anything is possible, but what is probable is that a first year head coach is taking over a very troubled franchise and they will continue to nosedive. Star players are unhappy, and with the way Slug operates, he's not going to get pushed around for more money. That stubborn old fool is that team's own worst enemy, and that's fine with me.

The Texans had better sweep them this year. And not just sweep, but mop them up. No way should a team under a 6th year head coach lose to a team in this state of disarray.

I've read that the FO thought they had a contract in place and he was agreeable. When they were explaining the terms he kept nodding in agreement.

...I probably shouldn't have...

I don't think it'll be that big of a deal once he actually gets his new contract. It's not like he wants to leave the Titans anyways.

My name is GP. And I approve of this post.

Of course he doesn't want to leave Tennessee, his teeth would REALLY stand out if he lived in any other state. Makes sense to stay.

And Arkansas doesn't have a pro team, so that state is out of the Chris Johnson sweepstakes.

I usually believe in a player honoring his full contract and then asking for a new one but being that most football players have short career especially short for a running back then CJ should get the most money he can while he plays. That being said, he should go to camp and discuss it like a man and maybe he has been offered a new deal but his overall ego is just getting the best of him.

IIRC, they didn't negotiate a new contract last year, but did find a way to get an extra mill or so to him. The kid SHOULD be paid, but as long as he stays out and adds to the teams turmoil ..... I am all for it.

If I were them, I would trade him anyway. RB has a short shelf life, and they are not gonna be good anytime soon. They could get a decent haul for him.

I doubt that. While he is good, backs have a short shelf life. You can find productive backs all the time. If he was a QB, then yeah, a haul for sure. But a RB? Nah. Maybe a 3rd or 4th? Not much more.

If he wants to go to a winning team than losing a year towards free agency is not good for him.

 Must spread rep.

He doesn't want to go anywhere. He wants to stay in Tennessee. They put a band aid over his contract last year and promised him a new deal this year. He's holding out until that happens.

Well, then he should show up to camp and talk things through.
