The amazing thing is that because the name is in parentheses that means the mistake is the writer's, not Reed's. How the hell does a writer for the Texans website make that mistake? That's an offense worthy of immediate termination in my opinion.

Wow, the writer for the Motehrship must be a devoted Texans fan. I read some other articles he wrote about Matt Schwab, Daniel Owens, Dwayne Johnson, and a couple of other guys.

The mistake shows the lack of journalistic integrity that the media has while this post shows the acceptance that we have for their laziness.

Yeah he has. This is his 3rd year. He played his first year, as a 3rd down specialist. He only missed last year due to injury. Besides, you don't think Barwin has anything positive to say?

I do understand the frustration and often I get caught up into it also; but I just want to see as much information from whatever source & then I'll sort it out. I think you will agree that we have been seeing a "dumbing down" by media over the last several years. I do not count bloggers, posters or myself as media. You and others offer me much more valid info than many other sources out there.

You , being a Texans fan know who these people are and see their mistakes readily.

Imagine for a moment you are a ..... Seahawks fan reading up on the Texans before a game and the article you are reading has many of the above mentioned mistakes within it.

Come game day you are sittin at the local sports bra talking with your friends about the game ..... using that article as reference. You look like .... dumbass. You've been misinformed by the very people who you rely upon for quality information.

It has less to do with journalistic integrity and more to do with sites and papers being cheap bastards. If they don’t hire editors or fact checkers, this crap happens.

The Chronicle fired a bunch of copy editors a few years ago, since then you can find glaring mistakes in articles all the time.

I am a copywriter, not a journalist, but I go to an office and write professionally every day (which I should be doing now:spin:). I have done this work for years, both with and without an editor. You can read and edit your own copy all you want, but without another pair of eyes looking over it for you, there will always be an error or two.

From pieces I have read on the site, it seems that they either have an incompetent editor or an overworked one.

Off topic, but what does a copywriter do? I understand the frustration. I write technical procedures for the operation and/or energization of low to medium voltage equipment quite often. I can't make those kind of mistakes or people could be injured or killed along with equipment damaged.

Thats the difference between your field and journalism .... they are afforded mistakes and it doesnt (often) lead to someone being hurt and or killed.

To do a job right the first time every time takes a special type of person .... to be a hack .... well , we all do that here on TT.com.

I make plenty of mistakes. We just have guidelines and tests in place to catch them. It usually works very well.

Writer for advertising and corporate communications usually.

I’ve done web content, billboards, sandwich signs, radio spot scripts, brochures, newsletters, general marketing material, etc.

We’re pretty much the “Ad Wizards” that everyone hates. :bender:

Very different animal from tech writing, but still in the same ballpark. I’ve tried my hand at tech manuals and white papers for products, and I have insane amounts of respect for anyone that can get all those details.

“Doing it right the first time” genuinely doesn’t work in writing all that much. Even the best make mistakes in the first draft and need another pair of eyes to look over it.

I make plenty of mistakes. We just have guidelines and tests in place to catch them. It usually works very well.

Exactly. In an ideal world, there should be another set of eyes and an editor between the writer and publication. You can review your work all you want but you will usually overlook some glaring stuff. Remember, it was your brain that made it the first time. Looking over it again sometimes makes you see the original idea instead of what you put down.

Websites and papers going cheap on editors (if they even use them) can cause stuff like this article.

In writing workshop classes where I read my stuff aloud I often would say what was supposed there versus what was actually there. Several occassions, I was forced to re-read a piece multiple times until I read the incorrectness correctly.
 
A lot of people have been so excited about Reed, but have completely forgotten about Barwin it seems. There is no immediate indication that Reed can take Barwin's job either. Barwin showed a lot of potential before getting hurt. He may end up being a nobody after a few years, but it should be interesting to see these guys rotating back and forth.

This is why I've been saying I'd prefer to kick Mario inside to DE (where I think he's a more natural fit.) That would allow us to get Reed and Barwin on the field at the same time.

Most people had Reed mocked as a 1st rounder. I'm expecting a lot of great things from him.

Yeah, I hear ya. Personally I would have preferred to trade Mario for other pieces of value to improve in other areas.

Just to continue the tangent, the same thing is true when writing computer programs. It can be really, really hard to catch the small errors and typos that you make, just by looking at the code.

As a faculty member, I've had students come in for help after spending hours trying to debug a program, and I find the error in under a minute (of course this doesn't always happen, but it's happened quite a bit). It makes me look really smart, but what's actually happening is that I'm just bringing a fresh set of eyes to look at the problem. I've even (like ArlingtonTexan) had students "read" their code to me, and had them say what they meant to do, instead of what the code actually is.

In programming, there are all sorts of techniques out there for catching these problems, ranging from having someone check as you're writing (extreme programming) or going over it separately (code reviews), which sounds more like what you're talking about, to more technical testing approaches, probably like what DocBar mentioned.

I have any procedures I written gone over several times for the fresh eyes. I do the same thing if I get stuck troubleshooting something because I often find myself with blinders on. I'm so certain of what I think the problem is that I can easily get locked in on it and dismiss other factors.

We're not really hearing about either player one way or another other than quotes and the random chron beatwriter who feels like doing a rundown of what they saw at TC (which isn't very often).

I'm buying into the "preseason matters" theme this year, especially if the 1's are on the field with opposing 1's. There we will all be able to come to our own conclusions about who sucks, who should be traded, and all that, rather than just parroting something we heard on twitter.

I think the guy we all forgot about is Nading.

He's also a tweener who fits the 3-4 better than the 4-3 just like Connor.

I saw a picture of Nading at practice & took me a while to remember who he is.

If Mark Anderson is still on the team, that could be a pretty hectic 3 way. I honestly think of him as a real deep sleeper that could surprise. I thought he played very well in his limited time last year.

Gonna be interesting to see how they use people in pre season games.
 
Is it just me or does anyone else get the feeling we could see some really different lineups this year? I know many want the road grader NT, but we could just about plug any player into any position on the DL and let 'er rip. I'm sure that's gonna be confusing as hell for OL's and game planning.
