Looks like he just signed, from his twitter:

Is he competing with Barwin for OLB, or just expected to back him up?
I would expect he'll be competing since Barwin is coming off of a serious ankle injury and both will be playing a new position. Let the best man win.

Or in the worst case scenario that Mario doesn't work out at OLB.
Get real.

Despite being a rookie, Reed has more experience on defense than Barwin. While I give Barwin the edge in the competition based upon his athleticism, I do think it will be a battle (though both will see plenty of snaps).

I remember the draft analysts were saying Brooks Reed was one of the best players in the draft at using his hands and that he even had a spin move like Dwight Freeney. I think Reed is going to end up beating out Barwin and then when we move on without Mario Williams (can't sign everybody) Barwin will move into that spot.

I think what everyone is forgetting is that all 3 are projections at OLB.

Of the three who is the most athletic? Mario.

Who's the best against the run? Mario.

Who's the best pass rusher? Mario.

But the Texans are going to "move on" without Mario? If they do, it will be because Wade failed, and the organization will be gutted in yet another rebuilding attempt. I truly hope that doesn't happen.

Huh?

Why would we get rid of Mario, in his prime, without getting anything in return?

We're just going to let him walk?

Two Words.

Franchise Tag.

Any ways I expect Mario to produce and when he does the Texans would be smart to lock him up long term. People seem to forget he played through injuries and still looked fairly good last year.

Not necessarily. Barwin looked good prior to injury and Reed could be awesome allowing Mario to be trade bait. This is how a team gets stronger. We are in a good place with these three and could do what we want. If we did decide to eventually trade Williams mid season, we could reduce costs, get a starter or two and a draft choice(s)or any combo of these..

You don't trade your best defensive player mid season when you've never made the playoffs and the coach is in a "do or die" year. No matter how confident you feel about your team.

I have faith in Mario playing OLB (I was all for it even when Wade was planning on putting him at DE), but there needs to be insurance.

As much of a Barwin fan that I am, there's a good chance that he could be the odd man out. I remember CND saying that not everyone comes back from an injury like that 100%, and Reed was enough of a talent that Wade considered trading up for him in round 2.

Here, at 2:30, check out how fast he sheds his blocker and covers seven yards to get to the QB.

And here, at 0:57 check out his spin move.

It's going to be a tough competition. I'd really like to keep both at that position.

Reed has explosiveness that I'm not sure you'll find anywhere else in our LB corps. I'm definitely excited about seeing this guy.

Actually, We didn't trade up for Reed, we traded up for Brandon Harris, most people didn't think Reed would last to our pick though

Actually, Brisco was saying that we CONSIDERED trading up for him. And that's what Smith said after the draft. We thought we might lose him to several teams before us or that someone might trade up in front of us to snag him.

Much like we did with Brandon Harris.

What I noticed in the first video is how well he manuvers along the DL in traffic from the back side of a play .... You know teams had to game plan around him and he should have been accounted for all the time .... That is just as impressive as his explosiveness and athleticism.

Thinking back on it..

Draft fell extremely lucky for us in regards to Brooks Reed/Brandon Harris..

Neither should of still been on the board..

With 2 spots open, hopefully they'll rotate all 3 guys in and out to keep all of their legs fresh the whole game.
