If Asante Samuel cut....Texans?

Texans probably can't afford to take on Asante's cap hit.

The Eagles need a safety after losing Mikell to free agency. I wouldn't be surprised if they dealt him or DRC. However, they may want to dump his 5.9 million salary to another team for a draft pick.

How much money do the Texans have left? Still have to sign our draft picks along with any other depth players they plan on adding. Asante may be beyond our price range now. Can't go too hog wild in free agency. Don't want to end up like the Redskins.

To get another solid corner? We can cut several players. Remember according to McClain we were @$118m against a $123m cap. We spent that $5 on JJ and Leinert.

I doubt he gets cut, but there is a report he's on the trading block.

NFL Network's Mike Lombardi reports that the Eagles are now willing to entertain trade offers for Asante Samuel.
This contradicts a report from ESPN's Ashley Fox, who after checking with sources predicted Samuel would return to Philadelphia. Samuel has large base salaries ($5.9 million in 2011) forthcoming, so he won't be easy to trade. He also isn't a schematic fit for zone defenses or teams that want their corners to play press-man. If the Eagles are going to make a Super Bowl run, they ought to strongly consider keeping Samuel this season, then cutting him when his salary jumps to $8.4 million in 2012. When healthy, he's still a top-ten cornerback in terms of ball skills and off-man coverage.

They also cut Dan OshitIranoutaboundski ..... and signed Tim Bulman.

0k0y3 and Anderson have been given permission to seek trades - they could also be cut if nothing comes of that.

I can see Samuels going to safety for them and the eagles having their other corner focus on the bump and run

Been saying that since they got aso.

I could also see aso going to safety.

But they are not going to cut Asante. Trade? Maybe. But unless they're getting a real good player in return it doesn't make sense.

I'd trade Mario and Kevin Walter for Asante and desean Jackson.

bahahaa... i love your trade proposal... but layoff the pipe

Could we trade the obvious players - okoye, slaton, and anderson (probably a low draft pick too) for him or is this a crack pipe dream also?

Badboy strikes again... Did you really think there was any chance at all that Samuel gets cut?
Maybe but a better chance at a trade. One of the NFL Network guys showed three "white boards of how Philly was able to sign everyone. On board # 2 he showed Samuel @ a bit over $9m cap. He is not a FA until 2013. I'd consider him for a 2nd & 4th pick. Philly should want to move him and Jets re-gned Cromartie. Probably be us and maybe Dallas.

They're definitely shopping him, absolutely zero chance he gets cut though.

I can think of a few more teams that may trade for him: Baltimore (lost Wilson), Oakland (lost Aso), Seattle, Jacksonville (looking to improve this offseason), Detroit (missed out on good CBs this FA), St. Louis (looking to improve this offseason) etc...

There should be a decent market for him beyond the Texas teams. I just don't see the Texans making a move for him though. We have enough DBs as it is and we're not sure where they will end up on the depth chart. Going into the season with JoJo, KJ, Allen, Harris, Carmichael, McManis (cut McCain and/or Moulden) at CB should be enough with improved safeties.

Guarantee me a starter even with Quin in support. Maybe Allen but I'm thinking Harris at top of that list and if I could get Asante, I'd keep Harris & Roc & cut the rest for cap space.

I'm not 100% certain but you might not save any cap sapce by cutting some of those guys due to acclerated bonus payments and wht not. In fact you may increase the amount the team is over the cap by cutting them, making it even more impossible to sign Samuel.

Texans are probably going to have go re sign Arian and Mario next year.

I doubt it happens.

If all the other guys we have can't step up and be a second corner then smith needs to find another job.

Mario will be a free agent, and will likely command a top 5 DE/OLB size contract. Average about 10 mill a year, which would be a welcomed reduction from the 14 million he's making this year and 13 he got last year.

Arian Foster on the other hand will be entering his fourth year in the NFL and will be subject to Restricted Free Agency. The team will likely put the highest tender on him, 1st & 3rd, and force him to sign that tender which is worth about 3.3 million for one year. Same thing they did to OD last year. Foster could hold out though and not sign the tender, but given that will be about 4 times all the money he has made so far, I think he will sign it.

I thought that under the new CBA fourth year guys were now URFA, or is that just for this year?

I think it will be Harris emerging as well, but not immediately. Allen will likely be the #2 to start the season, and rightly so as he has more experience in the league than the rest combined. Kareem has a chance to redeem himself, which I hope he does, but I'll believe it when I see it.

Slaton, Mouldin, Glenn Martinez, Barber, Darnell Bing, Hill, McCain are all late in their contract so bonus if any would be minimal and the salary itself would be gone.

Damn. Bing and Martinez are still here?

I didn't know that. Thought they were cut a long time ago.

They aren't. They were.

FYI - the other four guys likely save in the vicinity of $2.5 Million in cap room if all of them were let go. McCain and Hill are halfway thru their four year contracts with some unamortized bonus left. Slaton's scheduled to make $1.2 Million this year and is the only one in seven figures. McCain and Hill are each less than $500K before unamortized bonuses.

Edit: Actually, it just occurred to me that if we let the four guys listed above go, they'd have to be replaced in the cap calculation by four other guys. Since the minimum NFL salary is $375,000, that would mean those four players would be making a minimum of $1.5 million cumulatively, meaning the total cap savings would be in the vicinity of $1 Million at a maximum.
