Was Manning a starting Safety for Bears ?

Strangely, in April, there was a "Must Resign Manning" thread. Unfortunately, the thread no longer exists (and I can't find an Archive.)

From what I saw of the responses, there were some who liked Manning and some who didn't. Some of them looked like they were holding his first couple of years against him.

I am more interested in does he have the speed (4.47) and skills (hip swivle, back pedal and lateral movement) to play safety in Wade's defense. I think he does. Better yet Wade does.

He really didn't put it all together until last season, so a lot of people figure him to be a contract-year only guy. . .

Which is still better than what we had on the roster last year at this spot. Or any year really.

Man reading the bears forum I am having flashbacks of phillip buchanon, please tell me that's not the case here.

Bears defense statistics is all we need to know about the guy from last year in my opinion. They had success and he was part of it.

76Texan has been looking at the games and he's liked what he's seen.

They made him an offer that was pretty nice last year.
He refused that offer (business as usual).

One side didn't want to break the bank (especially when they're known to have pretty good defenses over the years; ie. they take steps to develop players).

The other side knows that he can command better in the FA market.

An organization shouldn't allow itself to be taken hostage.
It can only do so much in a flux market like the NFL today.

Manning isn't the biggest hitter nor the greatest ballhawk.
He isn't a franchise player that a team must have.
He's a good player that can make a team better.

You've got to pay to play, all I'm saying!

I don't know if Manning would start for the Bears. What I do know is that he can start for the Texans.

Here's an article by AJ that I think does a pretty good job of addressing some of these concerns

Reaction across the web to the Texans signing of Manning has been overwhelmingly positive. It's not like the Texans got the best safety in the league, or even a top ten safety, but Manning is a solid player who's capable of doing big things in Wade Phillips' defense. It's just a matter of how little time Wade's new chess pieces have to learn the new system before the games start to count.

da bears spent their 3rd rd. pick on FS Chris Conte so they had made some preparation to move on in case he could not be signed on the cheap. He started multiple positions one time or another, CB, FS, SS & KR. Now I'm only concerned where he'll start for Texans, CB, FS, SS or KR?

There was a radio guy from Chicago that was on the 610 yesterday and he said that Chicago doesn't invest a lot in their db's. He said the want to spend money on their d line. And circumstances have dictated they spend money on their lb's.

So he said the DBS get left out and they try to find bargains there. He said they are constantly bringing in young guys because they rarely re sign vets there.

One more thing.

He also said that he thought manning was a better Fs than ss.

He said that he doesn't do as well closer to the line of scrimmage with people flying all around.

He said he is better when he can sit back and see all the action and use his athleticism to make plays.

I don't know how wade plays his safeties but i get the impression that he plays both of them like a Fs for the most part.

Chicago is all about defense. Those fans will nitpick their defensive players. For the Texans, Manning will be just fine. He was good in Chicago and above average last season. Let's hope he continues what he did last season.

heard it. they play in a lot of in-climate weather conditions, which may have some bearing, if they played in dome situations against the likes of Manning I'm sure they would change their tune.

I agree with you. He is defiantly FS in my opinion (coverage/ball skills). Since Wade does like his Safeties interchangeable maybe we could just do away with either designation & just call them safety's but if not then Glover Quin should be our SS, fierce no nonsense kind of mindset, but not the best ball skills.

Manning is better than anyone we had on our roster last year playing the safety position. He should be an upgrade and hence an improvement in our defense. Whether or not that happens in reality, I don't know but that's why we play the games.

Heard/read:

Not a great football IQ, won't be a "QB of the backfield", athleticism balances that.

But more interestingly to me, heard that Manning was the best kick returner on that team ... including Devon Hester.

I'm fine with Quin being the QB of the backfield.

I'm not as fine with having my safety returning kicks when we've got Shiloh Keo and JJ who could do it without risking our fragile secondary.
