David Anderson out. Jeffrey Maehl to take his place?

I'm not going to link the news since it's already been covered in Houston sports media, but David Anderson will not be a Texan in 2011, and it's time to start speculating who's going to run his routes. I think the coaches already have it figured out by plugging in Jeffrey Maehl.

I already made a post about his acquisition, but now it's time to start evaluating him seriously since he's the only UDFA receiver we picked up who has the body type and skillset to replace Anderson. Here's his combine video of the three cone drill, for which he set the combine's all-time record. And here are some Youtube highlights.

I'm undersized and slow... I can run routes and not get separation if I need to... can I take his place?

Just kidding, I like DA but it had to be said.

Well we sort of need a guy who can get in between the defenses gaps and make quick little catches to keep the chains moving. Those types of guys are really important and right now I don't think the Texans have that type of guy. We need that pesky type and David Anderson was good at it. I hope Maehl can make that transition, but I still think we need a veteran to make those plays.
 
There's Dorin Dickerson and all three of the UDFA's (Maehl, Toliver, and Jean) are really talented.

I wouldn't mind bringing in a talented WR like a Steve Smith (NYG) or a James Jones.

I think our talent level at WR just got too great for DA.

We just haven't seen much of Dickerson in the slot to tell whether he will fit there or not.

I think Maehl can do well there, where this offense can use a guy who can run good, precise routes that can exploit some empty space in the shot area.

Tolliver is of a different mold.
He can run the quick out, the slant, the hook/curl stuff and use his body/size to shield off defender. He also fits what the Texans do in the WCO.

I think they both have a good chance to make the roster.

I agree that Anderson was good for us, but he barely played.

How can we miss someone we hardly knew?

I think the main thing with letting da go is that the udfa's we brought in have higher ceilings and immediately provide more athleticism.
