Sorry but I have ZERO confidence in our braintrust during this crucial period. Hasn't a Houston Pro Sports team been used as BAIT before. Didn't they learn from this. Give a deadline and then proceed with your other choices before they are all gone. Don't play the FOOL. Then when you don't get Aso you start throwing money around trying to do something and make stupid deals if there is any time left to do anything. It just seems that Aso may wait until deadline and then make deal with the Jets then the Texans are holding the bag. Hell if I was Rex I would tell Aso to wait until the last minute just to screw the Texans. Again just my opinion.

I have some of the same fears. I really believe though we are in a good position because of Cromartie. I think he really would like to come here and his decision basically hinges upon whether or not the Jets sign Aso. If they sign Aso, then I see us bringing in Cromartie. If we sign Aso, I see the Jets resigning Cromartie.

I agree. They should tell Aso they are willing to offer Joseph the same deal. Then Aso has to decide if he wants to gamble with the Jets, or take the money he knows Joseph will take.

If the Jets aren't offering him $12m+. How's he going to feel if he isn't the highest paid CB when it's over & done.

I'd be fine with the texans paying Joseph $12+ million

I have to agree with ya here.

The Bad News Bears return to Houston in 2012.

The Houston Cubbies.

You know how we love our losers. They gotta match the Lastros'
strategy.

So you are saying we shouldn't try and just give up?

Joseph and Cro I feel aren't signing. They see the money the Texans are throwing around for DBs and if Aso passes on Houston i'm sure these guys would love to deal with them. Especially Cromartie since he's confirmed he's going to follow the money anyways.

At least Cromartie is honest about going to the highest bidder. It really seems that Aso is playing games with multiple teams. I agree give Aso a deadline and make the offer to Joseph at the same time. Quit playing his game.

I think we've done enough trying. The money is out there, he's waiting for the Jets to pony up. If they don't he's going to sign with them for less money.

I'm thinking he believes he is going to set the market.

We need to let him know, we are going to set the market. We'll offer Joseph 12-14 million, making him the highest paid corner in the league.

Then we'll know if it's about the money, or if he has no interest in playing for the Texans at all.

Not give up but control the situation otherwise you risk getting NOTHING. What if the other CBs begin signing and we just continue to wait. Aso decides and everybody we wanted has already committed. C'mon what player used us was it in baseball?

No WAY Joseph deserves to be the highest paid corner in the league. Due to his frequent injuries, he probably isn't even a top 10 corner.

Sure, make him an offer for $9-10M a year but $14M for a corner that is maybe top 15 is RIDICULOUS.

If the Texans do that, I'm going to fart in your general direction.
Why on earth would we cut off our nose to spite our face? We don't get the guy we wanted so we're going to pay an obviously inferior payer more money?
PLEASE tell me you forgot to use the :sarcasm: smilie.

I disagree. Plus that would be overpaying for Joseph, some people say that 14 mil is overpaying Nnamdi!

I think if he was so willing to take less money for the Jets then trying to bleed them dry of every penny is unlikely. Afterall he's already committed to taking less in this scenario, if the Jets can't go past their 12 mil then they simply cant and he'd agree to sign already. It's not like he has to actually sign anything, it'll just be an agreement. I think if that scenario is true then he'd agree already.

IMO the guy is just weighing his options and isn't quite sure. Maybe he's leaning to one team but he won't make a decision until he's 100% sure if he were smart...and he is.

It's not being negative, it's being real. The same ol song & dance. Are they trying not to piss Nnamdi off or something, playing good guys.

Screw that. We need to stop being soft.

"Nnamdi, we are prepared to make you the highest paid corner in the league. But we aren't prepared to play your *****. We will make someone the highest paid CB. You've got an hour to help us decide who it will be."

I don't think there is a risk and if there is? Ah well, these are the risk you take when going after a great player. I'd rather the team take the risk and follow it through.

I actually do not mind the waiting. I have a feeling that the majority of the big-ish name corners will not sign until Aso does. He will set the market, and then everyone else will follow. If we miss out on him, I think we will still get a chance to talk to others.

I know we are allowed to sign starting tomorrow, but these guys can not even join us for a week, so there really is no rush to get this signing done today.

I also feel that no team is dumb enough to just talk to 1 guy. I am sure we have been on the phone with the agents for at least Joseph and probably others, saying things like don't sign anything till you talk to us, we may be able to beat your best offer.

Ok, it's called negotiating. Just because you say you'll make Joseph the highest paid corner doesn't mean that you will.

Doesn't matter if anyone thinks Joseph is worthy.

All that matters is that Joseph is the #2 guy on the market & Aso & his agent thinks we are desperate enough to do it.

The only way he turns us down then, is if he thinks another team will offer him more money, which he shouldn't believe, or that Joseph won't come for the money, which is a a stupid bet to take.

I see what you are saying now. So you are saying to make it sound like we are willing to offer Joseph that to put pressure on Nnamdi. Too many ways I think that could backfire though.

If he's half as smart as you think he is, he would have been thinking about this since January, just like we have.

I think paying that much for Joseph would suck worse than losing out on aso.

I hope if my Raiders aren't going to be the ones with Nams, that Houston gets him. IF he comes to Houston, you guys will all be very impressed with what a class act Nams is, and then you'll realize it isn't just about being paid with him.

LOL I know, that line of thinking didn't make any sense whatsoever. :) If the Texans did something like that they would be a league wide laughing stock and it would be career suicide for Rick Smith.

And this thread is kind of ridiculous and over dramatic because the other corners are not going to sign a deal until Aso does, because he's going to set the market and regardless of how hard the Texans try to set the market...they won't, they can't, and it's out of their control. Aso is going to set the market because he's the best player (arguably) at his position and he's the best player in this FA period. Guess what that means... He's setting his own market by getting teams to bid for him. That's normal for a elite star FAs looking for a new home and that's what HAPPENS in FA.

It's also ridiculous to say the Texans are going to take a step back and LOSE GROUND, because they're pursuing Nnamdi Asomugha. Even if they don't get him, they've already WON and gained a step because of their pursuit of Asomugha. They won, because now every agent out there knows Houston is looking to spend BIG BUCKS and is serious about signing serious FAs. Guess what those agents are going to do. They're going to sit back and wait for the dust to settle between the Jets and Texans and then they're going to entertain whoever lost out on the Nnamdi sweepstakes. How anybody can think the Texans are "losing", because of their pursuit of Nnamdi is beyond me, because that's clearly not the case.

you need to stop acting like you know whats happening & whats going to happen. cant even remember where i read it at this stage but earlier in the day lombardi maybe? tweeted that the texans are meeting him or his agent (cant even remember) today. for all you & i know they're all around a table making nice after agreeing to a deal

Or it could be an agent who knows he has the number 1 and 3 top rated CB FAs and if #1 sets the market real high, then #3 gets a very good contract also with whoever and the agents make bookoo cash!

And if you're Nnamdi you can turn around and say "and if you give me another ultimatem you will make my decision easier and then you will have to be prepared to take a chance on someone else who may upgrade the wack secondary you got now."

Well, I know they better not be meeting with Nnamdi today.

That's illegal.

Uusually I'd agree with this thread completely. But the way it is setting up makes me think he is coming here. I honestly...at 30...would rather be a Jet and competing for a SB. But the Texans will have about 3 mil more to offer and can wait. The Jets already lost Brad Smith and can't sit forever. Plus look at how this is playing out. alot of big deals have been announced already. the Jets would be all over the news with the deal. This looks like a "by the book" Texans move where it is announced on the proper day Friday. I never though they would get him but I'm leaning that it will happen. If I were the Jets I'd be selling his age, years to win it and what they have set up already.

If we really got Joseph my opinion of our braintrust just went up depending on what we paid. Now let's keep signing.

I guess everybody can step away from the ledge now huh? I can't believe I'm about to say this, but so far Houston's FO has done EVERYTHING right this offseason. From the draft on down. We are already one of the biggest winners this offseason and it isn't over with yet.

I think that is the case. Maybe not all is lost. I know I am feeling more optimistic now. C'mon SHOW ME THE PLAYERS RICK

I was hoping this was one of those reverse psychology threads. It appears to have worked, whether that was the original intent or not.

Mentioned earlier that today shows us why they drafted the way they did. So they could get one of the top FA CBs. Good job. And when you hear that they just got outbidded by Weddle's current team, you know they did what we all wanted. Let's see what we can do for the 2nd best Safety.

So much for this thread .... crash and burn.
Don't you love "the sky is falling mentality" around here?

Texans are huge winners this offseason. Picked up Wade Phillips whose a highly respected Defensive mind, I LOVE the guys we drafted, I like the undrafted guys we're picking up, I like we re-signed Jacoby and Butler, hoping Vonta is next, and I LOOVVVEEE the additions of Joseph and Manning to our secondary.

Now let's just go and make all this a success on the field!!

I love the yearly process of blue skys because of picking up "said people". I'm all about seeing results before praise. The people who complain do so because of 9 years of direct evidence. How is that hard to see? Sometimes even All-Star teams don't do well when not put in the right place to succeed. Every year is a wait and see.

I can't get over how relaxed and good I feel now that I'm not zipping through every NFL site on the internet hoping to see anything related to Aso.
Gafftop, I hope you're feeling better now also.

:uchicken:You should try and be excited sometime, it's really fun. Don't be chichen! :ahhaha:

It's all well and good to be wait and see and it's all well and good that we've had some bad years here (although I disagree that we've had 9 years of bad football.)

But I can't see anything wrong with being excited by your team's offseason moves because you think they've made the right decisions. I can't see anything wrong with being optimistic about your team's chances.

Can this all go wrong? Sure. This team could go 0-16 next year. With a few injuries that can be said about any team. There's no team out there that's assured of making the playoffs.

Personally, I watch football to be entertained. I watch football to be happy. If I were to take a mind-set of not being happy until my team wins a Super Bowl (or is a perennial play-off team), then I'd stop watching football because I'd only be happy for a few minutes before I was worried and pissed off about the next year. And there's no fun in that.

So if my team makes moves that I think are good and picks up players and coaches I think improve the team, why shouldn't I be happy about it?

BS! The people who complain do so because that's what they do. That said the Super Bowl isn't won on paper and in July.

I'm excited that they are finally playing this part of the game like a real football team for a change. Doesn't mean they've won anything but at least there's some excitement around here again.
