The All Encompassing 2011 Free Agency Thread

Paul Posluszny is a good ILB from the Bills that will be a UFA tomorrow (151 tackles last year). He may be worth going after, but if we got him it would probably move Cushing to OLB. Might work out for everyone.

NT/G Kelly Gregg will be released also(from the Ravens). Although he could return at a reduced salary.

Edit: Todd Heap, Derrick Mason will be released/cut too.

evansilva Evan Silva
#Ravens slashing an awful lot of vets: Mason + McGahee + Heap + Gregg = $18.6 million in salary. Gearing up for run at Nnamdi Asomugha?

Utah KR Shaky Smithson expected to sign with Green Bay

Titans | Matt Hasselbeck believed to be top target
Sun, 24 Jul 2011 09:37:26 -0700

The Tennessee Titans are believed to be looking at free-agent QB Matt Hasselbeck (Seahawks) as their top target once free agency begins. The Titans are believed to be considering Washington Redskins QB Donovan McNabb as a secondary option in case they are not able to sign Hasselbeck.

Banta Cain being released by Patts:

Patriots have informed LB Tully Banta-Cain, who had 15 sacks the past two seasons, that he will be released Thursday.

AdamSchefter Adam Schefter
ESPN's @adbrandt reports the Packers have told Nick Barnett they will try to trade him; if unable to do so, he will be released.

That would be a good pick up for us.

What about Babin possibly going to The Bears? Would be nice to get him outta our division.

IIRC, it is unlikely he resigns w/ titans due to them running a more traditional 4-3 with their DE's playing closer to the tackle.

Barnett is talking like he's been cut already

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/07/26/packers-say-so-long-to-nick-barnett/

Nick Barnett said via Twitter that the Packers have informed him he will be let go.

“Just met with G.M. Ted [Thompson]. Thanks for the great 8 years. Very blessed 2 be apart of such a great tradition and great fans,” Barnett wrote via Twitter. ”Happy I was able to be here for the great xlv run… I will always keep a Special place in my heart for this team and city.”

Owner Mike Brown said on Tuesday that he won't satisfy the quarterback's request for a trade. Brown says that a trade would reward Palmer for failing to play out the rest of his contract. Instead, they'll let him go ahead with his plan to retire rather than play for the Bengals.

Brown isn't bluffing either. The Bengals have told any team that has called about Palmer that they will not trade him, a league source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

Mike Brown is a petty asshole.

Cowboys are cutting Marc Columbo and Leonard Davis....multiple Twitter sources

Edit: seeing Columbo cut but ESPN says in limbo and might renegotiate

Mike Brown is a petty asshole.

Even though he paid top $$$$ for Palmer /Chad Johnson and is going to make them honor their contracts with the Bengals instead of letting them have their way and trading them he's still an A** hole?

I dont get it.

Good on the Bengals I say. This is a problem which has infected Proffessional Sports in recent times, not just the NFL.

Look at the Tevez saga at Man City at the moment, the guy has left every team he ever played for under a cloud and is looking to force a move to one of the big clubs on the continent in order to be 'closer to his family in Argentina'!

Wayne Rooney kicked off saying he wanted to quit United before christmas as a ploy to renegotiate his already huge contract of £90,000 a week to £250,000 a week, a rise of over £8M per year.

I'm sure it is happening more and more in other sports that I'm not as much aware of too, these players seem to sign a contract and force the club to honour it no matter what but when the tables turn and the player is no longer happy they have ways of forcing their hand and getting out of the contract early, often to great financial benefit.

Cowboys very may well be going after someone, though I also believe they were over the cap.

There were one of the highest over the cap. DMN had a Top 5 Boys to get cut the other day and Davis and Barber were included so they are on track to clear some space. Honestly, Doug Free is who they probably need the money for.

Plus they are trying to re-sign Doug Free.

Just put that above..that is their top priority

Roy Williams released too

espn_macmahon Tim MacMahon
Jason Garrett is officially in charge. RT @ESPNDallas: Multiple sources: Cowboys to release Roy Williams. Story to come.

That trade HAS to come down to one of the worst of all time? Top 10 bad?

Wow!

Agreed, but then again, who cares? *sorry Frog*

:). I understand

Horrible trade. There was always a prima donna attitude with him that I never got nor wanted when they went after him. Seemed to not take advantage of size and speed he used at UT. Glad they are clearing him out.

The money is most likely for Free.

Wouldn't be suprised if my Boys targeted Braylon Edwards and Cromartie

Funny how owners can terminate a contract but they won't let a player quit playing for a shitty team.

First FA deal of 2011 post lockout, no?

Not sure. Panthers agreed to terms with S Kevin Payne earlier in the day. That too though might not have been the first deal.

Chiefs re-sign OL Casey Wiegmann

The #Eagles will let all of their free agents walk - Stewart Bradley, Quintin Mikell, Jerome Harrison, Sav Rocca included http://ht.ly/5NX6O

Vikings/Redskins discussing McNabb

A team source tells CBS Sports' Clark Judge that the Redskins are willing to take "anything they can gain in return" in a trade for Albert Haynesworth.
The same source insists two things: 1) Haynesworth will be traded and not cut, and 2) the Redskins will make sure he doesn't go to the division rival Eagles with old line coach Jim Washburn. "They'll give him away for a ham sandwich instead of cutting him and running the risk of his showing up in Philadelphia," said the source. Aside from the Eagles, Haynesworth's market is unclear at this time. He's expected to show for Redskins camp later this week. http://clarkjudge.blogs.cbssports.com/mcc/blogs/entry/6384866/30878351?source=rss_blogs_NFL

Mason Foster the first rookie to sign(84th overall)

Citing a source familiar with Plaxico Burress, the Newark Star-Ledger reports that the free agent is drawing interest from the Texans, Rams, and Bears.

This sounds like an agent-driven report. The Chicago Tribune is adamant that Burress is not on the Bears' radar, and the Rams aren't expected to consider signing him, either. The Texans make a small amount of sense -- Kevin Walter can do many of the same things. This story may be a ploy from the Burress camp to attempt to drive up Plax's price tag with the Eagles. http://www.nj.com/giants/index.ssf/2011/07/free_agent_plaxico_burress_dra.html?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter&utm_term=%23nyg

If Washington were to get a ham sandwitch for tubby, they would probably have to fist fight him for it.

Raiders & Jarvis Moss reportedly agree to 1 year deal

Redskins to release P Josh Bidwell

Charles Johnson to stay with the Panthers http://t.co/l9FfnNB)

In addition to the Vikings, free agent FS Eric Weddle has reportedly drawn interest from the Colts, Jaguars, Cowboys, Texans, and Chargers.

The Chicago Sun-Times also listed the Browns earlier in the day, but that may have been an agent-driven report. Weddle is reportedly seeking a contract in the $7 million per year range. As the most coveted safety on the market, it's not an unreasonable request. https://twitter.com/#!/JasonColeYahoo/statuses/95961410915401728

Bucs signed No. 238 overall pick TE Daniel Hardy to a four-year contract.

The seventh-rounder earned all-Conference honors while posting a 32/545/1 line as a senior despite missing five games with a broken arm. A work in progress as a blocker, Hardy may spend his first season bulking up on the practice squad. https://twitter.com/#!/PewterReport/statuses/95950070918291456
