With spotlight dimmed, QB Leinart hopes for a chance to play

Free-agent quarterback Matt Leinart has heard the "bust" label applied to him during his uneven, five-year NFL career, but it hasn't stopped him from believing he still belongs in the league.

Leinart, who won the Heisman Trophy in 2004 and helped USC win successive national championships, was a disappointment with the Arizona Cardinals after they selected him with the 10th overall pick of the 2006 NFL Draft.

"I've heard everything. I've seen everything," Leinart told ESPN Radio's "Mason and Ireland" in Los Angeles on Friday. "For me, I haven't proven anything ... I haven't proven that I can play game in and game out. And I understand that. Now, I believe I can play and I'm not one to make excuses. I've never made an excuse in my time with Arizona. It just didn't work out for whatever reasons. ...

"You kind of look at the timeline of what's happened to me and ... having a pretty good rookie year and then the second year just getting the injury and then, you know, Kurt Warner, I mean Kurt Warner played himself into the Hall of Fame the last three years. There's not a lot I can do about that. I battled with a Hall of Famer two training camps in a row."

The Cardinals cut Leinart in September, just days before the start of the regular season. He signed with the Houston Texans but couldn't win the No. 2 job from Dan Orlovsky behind starter Matt Schaub.

Leinart disappeared last season, not throwing a single pass. His distance from the spotlight helped him shed a party-boy image that hampered perception of him coming out of USC.

"Perception is perception," Leinart said. "One person can think one thing of me and then that can escalate and then thousands of people jump on the bandwagon, when it may not even be true."

Said Leinart: "You look at where I was in college and, I've said it many times, USC was the pro football of California, of L.A., and we were on top. And myself, Reggie (Bush), you know, other guys on the team, it was kind of wherever we went that's how we were treated. (People would say) 'Oh there's USC guys. There's Matt. There's Reggie.'

"I was a 20-, 21-year-old kid, and I feel like I've always remained the same. I've remained humble. I've always worked hard, but at that time, it was kind like wherever we went it was a story, whether it was good or bad. It didn't really matter. There's a few things, you know, I think I've I learned."

Leinart remains confident in his ability to be an NFL starter despite pedestrian career numbers -- 20 interceptions, 14 touchdown passes and no more than eight appearances in any season. What he'd like to happen next is receive an opportunity to start somewhere.

"I thought Houston was a small and good steppingstone for me to get my career back on track and get a chance to compete somewhere and get that opportunity to start," Leinart said. "We'll see what happens. Your guess is as good as mine to see what happens, but I'm excited."

1. Leinart failed to realize that the life you had in high school can translate to the life you'll have in college (the fame, the notoriety, the talent level vs. opponents)...but the life you had in college won't just as easily translate into the NFL.

2. He's acting like Kurt Warner is THE reason he had tough luck in Arizona. I mean, seriously, you have to be better than the old man...and he wasn't. Leinart should have had more juice, more pep in his step, and a greater desire to unseat the veteran QB. I think he just enjoyed being on the roster, making the money, etc.

3. Houston is not your little stepping stone, Matt, and with a comment like that I can almost guarantee you that he'll never play for Houston again. You weren't better than Schaub. And you weren't even better than Orlovsky.

I guess he thinks since he didn't do any partying (that's been leaked to the media, yet) and he didn't screw up too badly out on the field while sitting on a bench here and watching REAL players play football, he thinks he's DUE another shot somewhere.

This guy is one final team away from being out of the NFL. I hope Vince Young goes somewhere and has the same thing happen to him. Then they can both go on a Girls & Boys Gone Wild college tour with one another and remember their glory years.

He's just trying to elevate himself by using such minimizing language about Houston.

You'd have to be a fool, Matt Leinart, to use such rhetoric. What NFL team wants a guy to be QB who openly says stuff like, "I made Houston a stepping stone"? LOL.

He hasn't learned ****, IMO.

You've got to know in your heart of hearts that if you are better than the man then you'll play. If the coaches & the staff didn't foster that kind of atmosphere.... then, you know. It's still on lienart to believe that & work as if that is the case, I'm not saying any different.​

You gots to know that the old man can't be around forever. If you truly believe he is a hall-of-famer, then there is a lot you can learn before you get your next opportunity. But the important thing is that when that opportunity presents itself, you've got to be ready........ & he wasn't.Look at Romo & Brady, both playing behind Bledsoe & waiting their time. When their time came, they were ready & they made the most of it. When it was time for Lienart to grab the starting job.... they cut him.​

Houston wasn't a stepping stone you punk, Houston was your saving grace. Be thankful you got even a semblance of a salary from us. Loser.

You can't remain humble if you've never been humble. What was it about being the "pro football (especially Reggie!) of California" and being "on top" and "that's how we were treated." and "There's Matt" that made you so humble? Oh, yeah, absolutely nothing.

If he had said "I was a narcissist jerk, but now I've been humbled." he might have a shred of cred - but now everything out of his mouth is just self-delusional nonsense.

He should be humble. Even Sexy Rexy beat out Dan O for second string.
 
If he doesn't re-up in this system he'll be more irrelevant than HWSNBN in less time... If he hangs out for another year or so, he might have a chance to start "somewhere"... It's his call. I will lose no sleep one way or the other.. :butterfly:
 
Translation: "If some other team will believe I "found myself" maybe I can get another year's pay."

Our backup QB was drafted this last draft. Schaub is the man remaining healthy 16 games and then the entire playoffs as he leads his team to Super Bowl. Man nothing tastes better than Grape Koolaide.

Since you brought it up... Let's say we get to 4-2 then Schaub gets hurt. Orlavsky can't find his helmet, so Lienart steps in & lights it up. For this question, imagine we go 3-0 under Lienart....


Do you sit him & throw Schaub back in for the next game?

If Schaub struggles for the 1st half, we're down 12-0, what do you do?
 
My gut says he'll be an okay-to-solid QB somewhere down the line. Won't be a Pro Bowler or anything but will end up being a Trent Dilfer type QB. Like I said though, just a gut feeling.

Sounds to me like Leinart is still living in the past of his glory days at USC as he goes into nostalgia mode while reminising about the good ole days with his infamous little sidekick Reggie Bush, who single-handedly brought down the USC programe by taking payoffs when still an amatuer.
Wake up Matt, that was a long-time ago boy, you aren't a Heosman winner in college anymore, you a backup qb in the NFL.

He should go backup Philip Rivers on the Chargers. It's only 2 hours away from LA, so when he's bummed out he can go back to the USC campus and see if anyone cares who he is.
 
It sounds like HWWWNM has changed his name and learned to throw lefty. You have to dedicate yourself entirely to an NFL career if you want to be successful. You can't go through the motions and say the right things. If that's what you want to do, go into politics.

Actually, the former Texan you mentioned couldn't even say the right things,...

“I’ve been on an expansion team and it’s not fun,” (HWWNBN) said of being the first pick by the Texans. “I’ve been on teams that aren’t winning and it wasn’t exciting. Football is a hard enough game when you go out there and you’re battling everything and you go out and lose it makes it hard. I wanted to be on a team that was fun and exciting and whether I had a chance to play right away, it didn’t matter to me.”

He mostly said the right things when he was here...
I don't blame him for being bitter towards the Texans. We did him no favors nor did he do us any. Leinart seems to be delusional IMO. He hit his ceiling in college and that ceiling is in the basement of the NFL.

Well, I may be in the minority on this, but as opposed to HWWNBN, I actually think Leinart can still make something of his career in the NFL. I don't think he ever lives up to his draft position, but I could see him becoming a marginal starter, or a solid backup. I never ever thought that HWWNBN would do anything once he left here - he either never had enough talent to begin with, or had it physically and mentally beat out of him while he was here.

Let's put it this way - if the Texans decide they need to figure out a way to keep Leinart and get rid of Danno, I'm more than okay with that.

I like my chances of getting Asomugha AND Joseph better than your scenario, but I play Schaub. Even in your scenario, I just do not see Leinert driving the race car to finish line. I'd allow Matt to knock off the rust.

Depends. Did they give up 4 FGs? A TD, FG, and a Safety? Or a TD (w/ 2pt Conversion) and two Safeties? Inquiring minds want to know...

Interesting scenario here. I'd think it would depend on just how good Leinart looked in those 3 wins and how many yards he was able to throw. That would show that he could effectively move the ball consistently. I'd probably give Schaub that game or at least that half to stay in though. This scenario isn't as improbable as many might think the idea of it is.
 
I go with Schaub. Lienart would be lucky to find his jock much less his helmet before Orlovsky. I'm not really happy with either of our back up QB's.
