Personally I will be suprised to see a big difference. Why? same line, same scared QB at this point. We have a solid RB,but not one that puts the fear in a defense.
 
I can see Pendry's quote. I don't think all players are giving their all and just waiting to see if David can take it all on his own to win the game. We may not have had the offense that put the fear into another team's defense... but it may be because the offense didn't fear for losing their jobs due to lack luster play and leadership from coaches.
 
I agree. I don't think We'll see huge changes this year because We're stuck with the same O-Line. Changes should have been made in the off season! Why did it take until the third week of the regular season for Capers to realize that we had an offensive coordinator problem. But hey, any change is a good change at this point. I hope Pendry is not as conservative as Palmer and perhaps our offense will finally show some enthusiasm.
 
If Pendry said he'll work to improve the offense to help relieve the pressure on Carr that can mean only one thing, run the ball. It means controlling the line of scrimmage and playing smash mouth conservative football, giving David just enough latitude to open things up so they can run the ball some more and control the time of possesion. well thats what they would like anyway :pigfly:
 
A thought has just come to mind...

Why did we go after a QB that was in a pass-happy offense in college and put him in a running system like ours? What was the point? We could have just stuck with Tony Banks and had him hand the ball off the whole game, with the occassional swing pass to the RB like we're already doing.

I remember watching Carr in college and seeing him pick apart defenses and had this bad *** swagger about him. And I thought, "Man I would love to have that here in Houston!!" I bet if we had an offense that is somewhat similar to the one he had at FSU, we would see the David we've been waiting for. We could still run the ball in the spread offense and I know it's not Capers game plan, but something has got to give. This hog-wash about running the ball with three TE's on EVERY first down is just not working.

I seriously doubt the change to Pendry is gonna make any difference. We just need to prepare ourselves for a dismal season and get ready to pick in the top 10 in April. I know the whole chicken little thing is getting played out but they haven't shown me any signs of hope that they're gonna be able to turn the mess around. True there were some 0-2 teams to make to the play-offs but when they were 0-2 they at least showed some kinda spark or insight that they had things under control. I just haven't seen it these past two weeks.

We're in a huge pool of quicksand and have no clue on how to get out... :goodnight

They have to PROTECT him first ....


Oh wait , there were no OL in free agency that were an upgrade ....abd none in the draft that would help either :brickwall
 
I know this isn't what the Carr and Palmer bashers want to hear, but the only time we moved the ball well on Sunday was when we were using the 3 and 4-WR sets. I wonder if those are a product of Palmer's playcalling or Capers' wide-open offensive scheme .... ?
 
Seriously though, it seemed to me that we have some kind of funk, no desire to play. Maybe some kind of shake up, little as it is, will help. Maybe a bigger shake up like getting rid of Dom will have to happen.

I understand all about Carr not having time, line not blocking, etc. This is not a new problem, we have had this in years past and were still somewhat competetive, playing teams close. we are in some kind of no desire to play funk. Could us getting rid of Glenn, Sharper, etc. give the team an attitude???
Something has happened this year, just can't put my finger on it.

The players have gotten seriously complacent, and the coaches haven't proven they can do anything to make the team better.

Wade's comment's right after the Pittsburgh game, saying that most of the sacks weren't the lines fault, and Carr's not taking personal responsibility for his play after the Buffalo game are both examples of individuals not taking accountability for their actions. Until the last game, the coaches never held the players accountable either.

We need to see more of that. For the past couple of years, if you have a big contract, you play. If you were a high draft pick, you make the team. If you have a big contract and want to sit out training camp, have a sore hamstring (wink, wink). Yada Yada Yada.

I thought it was great that they actually benched a couple of starters for poor play. If Davis doesn't block, put in Wells. His special teams play show he knows how to hit, and Davis isn't gaining many yards anyway. If the line isn't getting it done, get Wand back in there. At least he knows the plays. If Peek and Babin aren't getting it done, let's see Orr and Anderson. Wide reciever drops passes? Put in Armstrong - we know he can catch. This will fire people up.

In addition, I see the same players doing the same things they were doing last year and the year before. I don't think the coaches know how to make their talent play better, either individually or as a unit.

Pendry did such an awesome job with our o-line, we can expect the same greatness at O-coordinator

oh well, at least it gave us some excitement before our next thrashing... i mean game.

This scheme worked well for them, and I was reassured by it because it showed me that there is hope in the passing game. Now if we can just get a dedicated Player or two (what's up with Riley, Babin, the matador, etc.?), then we will start hitting with four cylinders.

Runner, that's what i am saying, The same things in previous years are still going on now, but we were at least more competetive than we are now. We went in and beat Miami at home, granted without Ricky. We played Indy, GB, and Minn. close games. We beat the Ravens. we bet the Oilers, errrrrrrr Titans twice. We were a competetive team with all the sacks, turnovers, and **** going on. Something has happened to change this teams desire to play to win. Being the defensive players we let go, caoches, GM, something has put this team in a low funk! They have an attitude and it's not a winning one.

I was under the impression that Pendry would be more conservative than Palmer (more runs, Double TE sets, etc). That's why I'm a little apprehensive abou this move but who knows, if we start to move the ball then let's be more conservative.

If there was none in the draft then how come New England starts their first round pick, G Logan Mankins??? :)

NE wouldn't not have taken Logan Mankins at 13 or 16 either. He was value at the end of the first but not in the middle.

The difference is player development more than talent. Our staff could render Mankins ineffective too.
 
I don't know about that.

You can mold anyone how you want them to be, if innately they are good players.

I'm saying that maybe we need to look closely at our scouting dept. and see if its run properly cause our track record in drafting first round picks have been spotty, especially when drafting for the defensive side.

Dunta not good enough for you? AJ? We can just glance at the last expansion team to see poor 1st round choices.

I'd agree that the scouting seems to be weak but feel it's after the first round.
 
The Texans have issues offensively on four fronts:

1. Scheme
2. Play selection
3. Execution
4. Talent

Scheme - I don't think you will find many people that like the scheme we are running. It seems predictable and stagnant. I don't think Pendry will have time to stray much from it this season, so we are stuck with it. Personally I would be happy if I didn't see the 3 TE formation the rest of the year. It seems to result in -1 to 1 yard every time.

Play selection - this is the area that Pendry can make a significant difference. We have a tendency to run a lot on first downs. Why not exploit that by using play action passes on first to suck in the defense and throw downfield. We need to pass more on 1st and run more on the later downs. Hoepfully Pendry has a plan to protect Carr better yet keep us balanced.

Execution - Carr is rattled and needs to regain his confidence in his line, receivers, and, most importantly, himself. The pre-snap penalties are killing this team on offense as well as defense. The offensive line has more talent run blocking than they have shown. DD needs to get on track. Most importantly, we need to get AJ into the game. He is our best offensive player and is a Ferrari that is being kept in the garage. I also like Matt Murphy's pass-catching skills and would like to see more of him. Derrick Armstrong needs to be in on every 3rd and 4th down situation.

Talent - Our line is average to below average overall in terms of talent. They are underperforming and might be in the wrong scheme. There are at least 5 teams with less talent (San Diego and Miami come to mind), yet we look like the worst in the league. This line should be above average at run blocking, bug so far that doesn't appear to be the case.
We can get a lot more out of our receivers. We have our Pro Bowler in AJ who is doubled every play. We have a burner in Bradford who has inconsistent hands but is capable of making a big play downfield. Despite his drops, we need to try two long passes a game to him (play action?). Gaffney and Armstrong have great hands and can catch anything throw at them. Mathis is the X factor. Hopefully he can get healthy and show us something.
DD is a solid runner that has good vision and quickness. He is also a threat out of the backfield. While he is in the middle of the pack in terms of talent for starting NFL backs, he is in a system that puts the focus on the run. He can put up good numbers if the line gives him some wiggle room.
Then there is Carr. Carr has the skills to be very good. He is not an elite QB, and probably never will. Unfortunately he looks shellshocked and is focusing more on the rushers than his receivers. This doesn't bode well for him. If we aren't careful, he will be damaged goods very soon. It is a shame because he has so much talent. I'd also like to see him spend more time in the film room with his offense. From what I have heard, he punches the clock in then goes home. That isn't going to get it done.
