Week 12 vs Titans

I thought about skipping this game.
I don't think it's a good idea to evaluate CB play against a QB like R. Smith, but let's do it anyway.

After a while, I don't think that I'll have time to go over everything.
So shortly afterwards, I will just keep the plays that are relevant to the CBs, and maybe a few others.

Houston Texans at 15:00, (1st play from scrimmage 14:55)

1-10-HST 25 (14:55) M.Schaub pass short middle to A.Johnson to HST 30 for 5 yards (S.Tulloch).

Schaub wanted to get AJ involved early so he wne with a quick short pass in the hole in front the MLB.

(sounds like that was the game plan, because that's what both analysts said; as they normally would have talked with team members from both sides the day before or on game day.)

Schaub could have waited for either Dreesen or Walter on routes that would gain more.


2-5-HST 30 (14:28) M.Schaub pass short right to A.Johnson to HST 35 for 5 yards and a first down (C.Finnegan). P1

Naked bootleg.
The LDE didn't buy the fake.
He stayed home to force Schaub to go quickly with an underneath route to AJ.
Good for a first down on Finegan.

Titans took away Schaub primary target AJ with a double team.
Schaub was a little nervous about the 5-man rush and side-arm a throw to JJ just out of his reach.

Another 5-man blitz forced Schaub to dump the ball off early.

The LDE had beaten Winston while the LDT had a push on Brisiel.
Schaub had the TE open downfield, but couldn't step up the pocket and couldn't wait any longer.

Mario bulled the LT into the RB C and onto the ground.
He then leaped over the dead body to make the sack.

As is often, Mario shut down his side.
As is also often, A. Smith lost his containment as the runner cut back to the other side for 5.

The Texans brought Pollard up on a 5-man zone blitz.
They dropped nickel back Quin, and the two OLBs (yes, OLBs - Anderson and Mario) into 2 underneath zones.
The two CBs dropped deep together wirh Wilson to form a 3-deep zone.

On play side, there's the TE as the most inside receiver, the slot receiver in the middle, and the outside receiver.

The TE ran a post route, taking away Wilson.

They flooded Jackson's deep 1/3 zone with a fly route by the outside receiver down the side line and a seam route by the slot receiver Gage.

The QB Rusty, with plenty of time, went for the slot receiver.
Jackson read the QB's eyes, broke off the outside route to come back and deliver a blow to the intended target, jarring the ball loose from the slot receiver for an incompletion.

If only the Texans safeties can play it as well as Jackson did.
He got two receivers threatening him deep (one on either side) and was still able defend the pattern by himself.

It is most likely that Wilson who came in afterward that knocked the ball loose. I'm going to assume that it was the case.

Nonetheless, it did not take away from Jackson's excellent play.
If Jackson had continue to run with the outside receiver a little longer, that would have been a completion, probably for about 30 yards.

And there's no telling if Wilson can make the tackle.

At any rate, I was wrong about not being to judge a CB's ability with a QB like R. Smith.

When the QB has all the time in the world, a clear passing lane, delivering the ball on time and on the numbers, it always qualifies as a true test for a CB.

(And here, I agree that it's not a good idea to drop Mario back too often instead of having him rushing the passer.)

Another note here is that nickel back Quin dropped to the flat, covering grass when all 3 receiving threats on his side were running away from his zone. This is not a good scheme or poor execution of whatever scheme the DC meant to run. And it all comes back to Frank Bush!

We're only early in the game. The INTS will come later!

Why don't you put up some video clips then!

I've already said I don't know how and it only gives you one part of the story. But it can really help.

I've also said in the Jets game thread that anybody (including EU) is welcome to put up video clips or pictures or comments. So, be my guest.

A note here is that you hear double-team and safety a lot (or at least more often) when the opponent defends our offense as opposed to how the Texnas D play.

LDT Okoye penetrated ahead of the LG, allowing NT Cody plenty of room to loop around and get into the QB's face.

R. Smith couldn't step into his throw and left the ball up in the air for Quin to make the play.

It was a very good play by Quin to be sure; but let's not forget that if the QB had time, that would have been either a long completion or an incompletion. Why?
A decent pass to the outside could have seen quite a different result.
Quin had depth, but the receiver had a lot of space on the outside.

Pass slightly high.
A good pass and a good catch "might" gain about 10-11 here.
Or Jackson can put a hit to jarr the ball loose from the receiver.

Both Quin and Jackson were doing the shuffle back into their respective outside deep 1/3 in cover 3.
Wilson shaded to Quin's side a little as there were 2 receivers on that side while on Jackson's side there was a receiver and a TE. Quin also got help from a LB jamming the receiver.

The ball was thrown to Jackson's side to the receiver who was free to run a a skinny post..
Jackson reacted back well; he had a chance to put a hit on the receiver.
(Note that I said it still was a good chance for a gain of 10 or 11 if it was a good pass.)

Nothing was definite here.
All it shows is that Jackson read and reacted well.
Especially considering that the TE ran a quick out route to the flat where Jackson also had to be concerned with (as it can beome a wheel route - out and up along the side line.)


2-10-TEN 27 (12:35) R.Smith pass incomplete short middle to R.Moss (G.Quin).

Quin broke off the pass that would have gained some 12-14 yards.
Good play?
Yeah, if you consider the side-bar as a legal play in football.
Replay clearly showed that Quin wrapped his left arm around the receiver waist to reach around to get to the ball.

I've talked about this often.
It's good if our CBs can push the envelope (like they all do throughout the NFL).
But in evaluating CB's play, you want to see how the pass was defended.
If you're a fan with integrity, you want the ref to call it consistently.
This is another case of the rule being put there only to have high potential for being abuse (and I am talking about the refs.)


3-10-TEN 27 (12:29) (Shotgun) R.Smith pass short left to R.Moss ran ob at TEN 41 for 14 yards and a first down.

Allen misread the play and abandoned his outside zone to help Quin on the slot receiver.
If Moss hadn't fallen down, he could have gained at least another 5 yards before Nolan arrived.

The idea of jumping to help is good, but Quin was already in good position to defend the play.
It would have been better for Allen to make sure the opponent doesn't get a first down so the defense can get off the field. This would give the offense good field position.

It's quite possible that the pass was intended for the slot receiver but the QB overthrew it and the outside receiver caught it. Then it's a good read by Allen, but the reaction wasn't so good as he misjudged the line on the ball.

First down Titans.

Titans tried a reverse.
LDT Okoye penetrated ahead of the RG, took him all the way to the other side (play side), shutting it down.
Mario was also nearby to contain, a few yards back.
Mitchell recovered very quickly (he had originally attacked the opposite side) and came over for the tackle (8yd loass).
The play was possible due to Okoye, however.

Good read and jump by Cushing from the hole (the Texans were taking deep drop as it was 3rd and 15).
Both Quin and Jackson also reacted well.
Either one of them could have made the play to stop it short of the first down.

From the shuffle, Allen couldnt react back quickly enough to the short are behind him to the outside.What this shows is that the shuffle has its dawback.
A CB like Allen, who uses the shuflle frequently (he doesn't use the backpedal), is still lft defenseless by the technique.
(The ball bounced off the ground and should have been an incompletion, but the receiver was still open and the CB wasn't helped by the shuffle here.)

Cushing got past his blocker to the outside and made the tackle.

Quin with a good jump on the quick swing pass..The QB showed his hand from the start.
Quin played off-man and can see it right away.
It's still is a very good play by Quin.

Okoye pushed the double team, A. Smith penentrated and pushed the RG.
The QB didn't have room to step up and threw a bad pass that Cushing almost intercepted, but he couldn't hang onto the ball.

RCB Verner was also doing the shuffle and couldn't react back to the quick route in the flat.
The Texans aren't the only team to use this technique.
I mentioned it when talks about the technique first came up a couple years ago.
The Dolphins, for example, mainly uses the shuffle or just turn and run.
They drafted Sean Smith out of Utah, whom I mentioned during the draft that year, used the technique exclusively in college. He didn't use the back-pedal.

Finnegan had bitten the PA fake. AJ was running toward the corner.The Titans palyed single safety; the FS was in the middle of the field;
there was no way he could have caught up to AJ.

That was a great opportunity for a TD there.
The commentator was surprised that no intentional grounding was called.
What happened was that Schaub was ready to throw to AJ, but because of the incoming pass rush, he knew he couldn't step into the throw and just got rid of it on the same line toward AJ.

At any rate, the Texans offesne countered the early blitzes and pass rush by the Titans with quick shor passes (several of them to the backs and the TEs) and a steady doze of running plays.
They converted 9 of 18 thirrd down situations.
They kept the ball for alomost twice as long.
They shut down the Titans running game, allowing just 24 yards on 12 plays.
CJ gained a mere 5 yards on 7 attempts.
It made it very hard for a young QB like Rusty.

Titans in single back shot gun spread, 2 receivers on each side (after motion).
On the right side, they had the slot receiver and the TE who lined up right next to him on the outside.

Texans were in man coverage with a single safety.
Pollard played press on the TE and run with him.
They had Jackson playing off-man about 5 yards from the LOS, inside both the TE and the slot.
This make it an easy pitch and catch as the slot run upfield about 3-4 yards and cut to the outside, underneath the TE.

The Texans blized with 6 but never got there.
Again, as I've talked about this in the Jets game, blitzing and playing off-man just don't add up to me.

If you play on the receiver and the CB sees that he could get beat right away, he can grab his man and take a 5yd PI.
Only the receiver and the QB knows where the ball is going to go; the CB has to wait to see which way the receiver breaks (inside or outside or deep).
Playing off-man puts the CB in a wait-read-and-react mode.

Another note here is that the Texans had the lone deep safety played on Allen and Quin side.
The Texans let Pollard and Jackson one-on-one with their men while giving support to Allen and Quin.
What does this tells us?

If there was a throw, he should have thrown a deep ball that would go out of bound at the worst case.
If there was a miscommunication between QB and receiver, Rusty should have just thrown the ball away.

Even the commentator (Dan Fouts, the legendary Chargers QB said so.)

Again, it was a great play by Quin.
Give him his due credit.

Just make a note that it was a mistake by the young QB.
