Next Move Scrap the 3-4

The steelers showed us how a 3-4 is supposed to be executed. We don't have the studs up front or the linebackers for the scheme. Peek can go back to his original position as a rush end. Walker and Payne at tackle and have Johnson replace babin on the other side at end. Or put whoever wherever, bottom line is we don't have the personnel for the 3-4.

Thers just one problem with this idea. That is we dont have the personnel for a 4-3 either. How does that happen. How

Anything is possible. I would put Payne and TJ at DT. Peek and Smith DE. Wong could play inside LB, Greenwood WLB and Babin SLB. It can be done. It is a matter of training and determination. If they switch to that though, then I would say do it now. That way our players will have experience before the Next season rolls around.

The team ran 4-man fronts quite a bit yesterday, for those of you who may not have noticed. I really love how people come on here bashing the 3-4 defense. It's not the scheme, folks. It's the coaching, personnel acquisition, and execution. Who do you have for your four down linemen? Payne, Smith ... Walker? He may be suffering a significant injury. TJ? He's a rookie. Ioane? Journeyman that makes a few plays but realistically wouldn't start for at least 25 of the 32 NFL teams.

The bottom line is these guys don't get pressure on the QB. Payne has actually done a good job this season, in what he is asked to do. The offsides penalties are boneheaded, and he doesn't get a pass for them, but his play once the ball is hiked has been good. I haven't paid as much attention to Smith. Johnson, in limited play, hasn't really impressed me yet, but he's a rookie. Babin and Peek definitely are not impressing me. Wong and Greenwood are doing a pretty good job, IMO, as is CC Brown. It's just really hit and miss right now.

If we ran mostly four-man fronts....then we're not running a 3-4.

So....basically, we have a 4-3?

Just more confusion.

I know. I know. The "beauty of the 3-4" is that you can sometimes sneak a fourth man up to the line and confuse the offense! (This is where I giggle like a little girl and put my hand up to my mouth...).

It don't work none.

Forget the 3-4 and just use the biggest four fat guys on the line, put the next fattest three guys at LB, and put the next least fattest four guys in the defensive backfield. How is that too hard for this team to figure out?

I get the job!

Zzzzzzzzz

You basically have your 4-3, it doesn't matter there either. Wake up and smell the Fangio.

Usually I carry a very optimistic take. This appears to be very systemic and there is no light at the end of the tunnel, other than the cheerleaders. The players seem to have given up since there is not one leader on this team.

Stay with the 3-4 and measure the front office based off of this system since they own it and the players they brought into run it. This will make it much easier to cut the ties at the end of the season and move on.

If we did go to a 4-3 this is how i would see it.

Coleman Earl
Wong/????/Greenwood
Drob Peek/TJ/Smith/Babin Pburnt

Not quite sure what i would do at MLB, possibly aquire one in the 2006 draft. I think we would trade/cut Payne and keep Walker for backup or vice versa.

obviously if we have too many quality DTs and no MLB then we obviously don't have the personel to run in yet, but the change would only take a season.

Wong would most likely be the ILB in a 4-3 system .... He did play ILB when with Minn. ..... In a 4-3 .Greenwood and Babin would play the two outside spots with Peek moving to DE ... Payne Smith and johnson would be the other DL

4-3 / 3-4 who gives a S**T, just get rid of buchannon - No heart = No job. Take a loss on this one it will be worth it. I would rather see some kid from the practice squad and put him in as long as he is willing and motivated. Can someone please sit P-buc down and force him to watch "Rudy" a few dozen times before Cincy. Rant over.

But there's a catch: When using the 3-4 defense, your linebackers have to be your best athletes. And you also better have some pretty strong, but very unselfish, defensive linemen up front.

I think any coach that tries to use the 3-4 defense has to be patient. Don't rush to install it before you have the personnel to play it.

Scrap Fangio next! If teams like San Diego can implement the 3-4 in a single offseason to great effect, then it has to be Fangio's implementation that's at the heart of the problem. I think the talent is there, for the most part.

3-4 defenses last year were as a collective better than the 4-3.

Yes Wong did play MLB at Minn, but I personally like him at OLB in a 4-3. I agree that Greenwood would play OLB, but not Babin... Babin would be a defensive end in a 4-3.
