Kubiak in 2011 season

Hopefully there will be a season. Many of us thinks Gary is in a must win scenario. If you do not tell us why. What must our coach do or not do for Texans to be successful? No, he will not resign. Does he simply take care of offense and allow Wade Phillips to run defense or will it take more than that? Does he let Foster and Tate and Ward pound the ball? Does he use AJ, the looking better every day Daniels and the really looking good Dreesen to air the ball out? A balanced attack seems good but it is hard to argue with a slow steady, ground eating, keep the opposing QB on the sidelines offense. How much will the Offensive Co-ordinator actually do?

Were you satisfied with special teams last season?

While i do think it is a must win scenario for gary, the lockout does help his case to get one more season. I think best case scenario he takes over the offense and allows wade to totally take care of the defense. I feel that he will have a balanced attack like last season because it proved successful. ST were horrible last season as turk struggled mightily and tackling was an issue (Ravens KR to start off 2nd half as an example)

I have to agree with Ndevine7 here.

Offense- I think Kubes runs the show. I am hoping to see the ol' use the run to set up the pass, and can envision some wicked play action. I would like to see #2 receiver brought in through FA, and have a corp of AJ, FA, KW, JJ, DD, and DA.

Defense- I think Wade runs this, with little to no interference from Kubes. The main positions I worry about are NT (still not sold that Mitchell/Cody can get the job done), FS, and CB. I hope we grab a couple NTs through FA and UDFA to get some camp competition. I think we go into the season with Mitchell, Cody, and the winner of camp. For FS, I am hoping for Weddle of some other FA. I think Quin could do a good job, but he is the only proven CB on the roster. In terms of CB, I hope we get Aso or Taylor, but am not counting on it. I anticipate going into the season with Quin (who stays at corner due to FA), KJ, Harris, Allen, and Carmichael. Maybe another guy off the current roster, but not sure.

I think our Special Teams become vastly improved this season. I expect Holliday to return and lock down the KR spot, and while I dont think he will be a threat to take one to the house, I think Keo takes the PR position. All of the players we drafted (except Yates) have the ability to play special teams, and I expect the Day 3 guys (Carmichael, Keo, Newton, Ozougwu) to play special teams if they make the roster.

Way to early season predictions:

No FA acquisitions- 9-7
Address FS or CB, not both- 10-6
Address both CB and FS- 12-4

I would love to see it and i really hope that with Fosters success Kubiak would use the run to set up the pass especially with how good Schaub is with the PA. On a side note with the Jets possibly releasing Brad Smith what are your thoughts on picking up him to be a PR/KR (if Holliday fails). He is a very solid ST player and could see plays at WR. The guy is a game changer and if he is released id love to see him added.

Unfortunately, I think a 10-6 record with or without a WC berth will be enough for Kubes to keep his job. McNair doesn't like change and that record will be enough for him to accept the status quo and think we'll kick the door in in '12.
If the D improves under Phillips, I think we'll see too balanced of an attack that will drive a lot of us crazy. Kubes tends to be conservative and knowing he has a D that can stand it's ground will reinforce that philosophy.
I have no idea what our ST will look like this year. Does Keo have the speed to be a threat at PR? I'll be glad to find out if we sign Breaston in FA and give JJ his walking papers or trade him and his speed to Dah Raidah's for that punter they have. You know how much Al Davis loves speed. I think Turk had a down year, but will rebound, personally.
I'm for just about anyone not named Slaton or Davis returning kickoffs this year.

With the upswing in RB last season, I could see Texans going with only 5 WR. Creating another player spot.

Kubiak needs to instill the dominant game plans of his old Denver teams. Focus on the passing attack in the first half to get a decent lead, and churn and burn the running game in the second half to secure the win.

The team last year had the pass and run offense to make this happen, but the one flaw that destroys the strategy is a horrible pass defense. You cannot allow the other team to waltz down the field without using time in the second half. Even the dominant performance in their initial game vs. Indy, was only saved by a running game that was out of its mind in the second half.

Stops are of course ideal, but letting a team run down the field is much preferable than an 8 play, 3 minute, passing-based touchdown drive. Pass covering safeties, and experienced DBs are the cure this team needs.

I can actually see 6 receivers on the roster, with Holliday getting the 6th spot as a KR. 3 RBs on the roster- Foster, Tate, Ward. Slaton gets dealt for a pick (could fetch a 5th or 6th, since TJ was in that range), or outright cut.

Also, I think the LS position gets nixed. I believe most teams allow a second or third string guy at another position snap, instead of taking up a spot for that specialized position.

I have Holliday as KR/WR but not counted against WR. Slaton if I can get a 5th is gone but for some reason, I see him on roster. Man, 65 I don't know about the LS. I've proposed that last two seasons and have been castigated for doing so. I think Tate and FOster's ability to catch out of back field will open field more and decrease need for much WR depth.

An NFL coach getting SEVEN years without a playoff birth would be disgraceful.

I am from Michigan and Lions fans deserve a winning team, but it is painful to see the Lions get re-built, piece-by-piece, in a few years after going 0-16.

If the Lions make the playoffs and the Tsxans do not, Houston football fans should be ashamed. (and I say that as a long time Texan season ticket holder).

Enough already.

I dont really want 4 backs on the roster, and I like Ward better than Slaton. Slaton brings nothing in terms of special teams, and has that neck injury. I know he played well in limited time this past year, but I think he will never be better than in that role. Plus, Holliday could take a couple snaps out of the backfield, as he did at LSU.

If anything, the ability of Foster and Tate as receivers out of the backfield is what makes Slaton expendable.

Dreesen was the long snapper until OD went down so the Texans are not averse to the idea.

The reason most teams do carry a dedicated long-snapper is because the Dressen situation. Once Daniels was hurt and he became a real player, the Texans brought in a long-snapper only type.

Most teams do have a long-snapper who has enough football background and size to in pinch play LB or Te or something. Weeks at 5'10 ish 250 ish looks like dude from the bar centering because he can't do anything else.

Well I'm pretty sure the gameplan for the colts is to run the ball alot and short safe passes

And on d is to play maximum zone and little to no blitzing

I hope either Weddle or Micheal Huff is signed. Maybe even Sharper if we are lucky but someone who is better than what we have.

Oh, I agree. I just want to see Slaton have one season used the way he should have been. I think his talents were never made the most of. I liked his rookie season but it may have ruined his career.

On the contrary, most teams employ a dedicated long snapper. Including every team in the AFC South.

Really? Well shoot, there goes that theory. It feels strange that teams would use a valuable roster spot for a guy that solely snaps. Anyway, if Dreeson has snapped in the past, I would like to see him do it again. We are going to have 4-5 TEs on the roster anyway.

Having a reliable LS is pretty valuable.:peek:

Barring a shortened season with too little practice time to prepare, this has to be it for Kubiak. Playoffs or bust. I might even fire him (at this late point) if he barely made the playoffs and got beaten a little too easily in our first playoff game.

It's time to win or go away...

There's always the stay-and-be-our-OC option. :)

I was just thinking about this today.

I feel like Kubiak already has a built in excuse to get yet another year of employment as HC due to the lockout if it lasts longer.

I also agree that after all this time and crap, just getting to the playoffs and then getting destroyed in the 1st game is not enough for me, especially if the Texans just barely get in by having to have other teams lose or something. Maybe it's too much to ask, but I want a commanding W/L record with no questions asked access to the playoffs and winning at least game 1.

If that doesn't happen, I hope that McNair goes ahead and finally gets rid of Kubes and hurries up and promotoes Wade to HC (No, I don't WANT Wade as HC, but we all worry in the back of our minds he is the HC in waiting if we are being honest and we can already imagine this nightmare scenario playing out...) so that he can flame out as quick as possible so we can FINALLY try to land a big fish here with experience. Hopefully any will even be around by then.

I know it's a negative post, but damn did last year and Kubes somehow magically keeping his job just really bother me. My apathy from last year is still lingering I guess. It must be a F ton of apathy too, cause normally I am foaming at the mouth for some Texans football by now.

:kubepalm:

Definitely understand the apathy. This draft gave me some of my hope and excitement back. Now I need a good free agent signing or two and then my hope that good coaching will vastly improve our young defensive backs.

I agree. The question is whether our designated LS is doing so much better at snapping than Dreeson that he warrants a roster spot. As I dont remember issues with Dreeson's snaps, I think not.

I don;t remember any issues, either but Dreeson's play at TE warrants the roster spot, imo. Dreeson proved to be a valuable TE when OD went down. If OD gets injured again, can we be sure there are reliable street FA's or someone else on the team to move to LS? We can debate it til the cows come home, but the first errant snap in crunch time will settle the issue. Is it worth losing a game or two over?
