The Texans took a risk going with front seven players (J.J. Watt, Brooks Reed) with their first two picks when the secondary needed so much help, but we can’t kill either pick because this team needs defenders period. (We are worried Reed’s draft stock was inflated.) This team has not drafted defense consistently, which is why they spent their first five picks helping new coordinator Wade Phillips. It’s an uneven approach that speaks to this organization’s desperation.

an we blame anyone for doubting our drafts? Seems like one or two of us (me included) have bashed the coaches. I think they got it more right than wrong but this year compared to last, I am ready to go down with them on this draft. Now go get a vet CB and do something for NT. Anyone think we can get Ron Brace from Pats?
 
Opinions are like butt holes, everybody has one. I have seen this draft graded from A+ to D. We won't know jack about how this draft pans out until we see some football (preferably a couple of years worth).

ou honestly don't think the coaches draft decisions will be judged by the owner? I think Bobby is basking in the warm glow of the fans' reaction to this draft. If Brooks Reed starts at OLB and falls apart with minimal impact after 3 games, I think McNair will be all over his entire staff including the scouts.
 
So basically by the reasoning of this article, every team who had too many holes to fill with one draft had a bad draft? I think we had a great draft because we narrowed down our needs in free agency to just a couple of positions. If we can add a top CB, and also a decent veteran WR and NT then we will be well on our way to a decent season. Its not too much to ask to add one real quality player along with 2 decent players.
 
Not sure how anyone can look at the 9 years this franchise has put together and not think that that "Haters' are on to something.

Yep. Most people probably gave us an F after the 2006 draft. Now, most people would probably give us an A++++++++++.
 
the writer probably doesn't know anything about football then. the front 7 is more important and it's what make your secondary. no pass rush and your secondary is most likely ****. good pass rush and you have a good-decent secondary.

although i think i wouldve preferred nick fairley, robert quinn or prince and for 2nd round i wouldve picked rahim moore.

Yeah, we know draft grades are about as useful as power rankings. Yeah, we know they got a lot of clicks like power rankings so the corporate overlords at Kabletown like us to do them for NBCSports.com.

(My method: If I know a lot of the players a team took, I give them a high grade. If I don’t know many of the players, I give them a low grade.)

Exactly. This is the part I hate about the draft. I was reading PK today and they said in 2006 even guys like Gosselin and some others gave Arizona and A and all their guys have been busts. Names on paper don't mean squat. Let's see how they play. All of these guys have talent or they wouldn't be drafted.
 
Draft grades are about potential - which team got the most value out of the draft based on projected potential and need. If a player was supposed to be there 50 picks later, than a player is thought as a reach - if a player slipped and you grabbed him, thats a good pick. Especially if he fills a need.

So, why are grades from different sites not the same? Because not every site has projected the players the same. So basically a grade is a personal opinion of whether a player is a reach or not, and whether he is a good fit or not.

So are they helpful or worthless? Neither I´d say. It´s a long time till we see these players on the field (lockout or no lockout) - so the fans want to know, if they drafted the right players. And with those grades you can read some educated but still personal opionions about that - and you can read how other teams did based on educated but still personal opinions.

But in the end, it`s still opinions... personally, I try to read as many of them as possible - simply because it`s a long way till we see them play, and I want to read more about those players, and if other people see stuff in them that I didn`t see.

i dont think that is true. our 2006 draft was very highly regarded even though we took Mario over Bush. In fact, some people thought Mario was actually a safer pick. Yeah, we took a LOT of heat for not taking Bush, no doubt. I just think the draft wasn't completely discounted as an F because we took the best defensive player.

Ryans was known commodity. In mock drafts before the college season, he was in most top 10s. If I remember, he got dinged or lost some production his final year, but he dropped. Winston was a starting tackle for UofMiam. Daniels was highly regarded and a great value. They took solid football players in 2006. Not sexiest, but solid. They followed suit in 2010. Not sexiest, but pretty solid. This draft smells like that 2006 draft with their early picks.

And we SNOWED Belichik by giving up only a 5th Rounder to move up to get Harris. I guarantee that deal started at a 2012 3rd or this year's 4th Rounder. Bill wanted to trade down and it seems that Rick may have sensed this and held out till his offer of a 5th was accepted. Moving up to get your guys is important but not giving up the farm (i.e. Saints/Ricky, Falcons/Julio) is important.

Maybe its the Osama death talking, but I think Rick, not just Wade, showed some moxie in the draft this year. We didn't give up the farm for Petersen or Miller and we got good players. I preferred Quinn, without a doubt, but they didn't like the tumor. Totally understandable and it makes questioning Quinn v. Watt pretty much a mute issue.

Well rant over, and lets hope for the best. These guys supposedly love football and are high-energy guys. They both have shown some versatility too.

I didnt read the article but I think you just contradicted yourself.

You said the front seven is the most important and the writer probably doesnt know anything about football.

Then you said you would have taken a CB in rd. 1 and a S in rd. 2???

Just saying, needing a little consistency here brah.

Solid post. I agree.

It has to do with where you draft at (what position you draft at) and who you grab based on what you need and the likelihood of that player actually becoming a starter as soon as possible.

I think Watt, Reed, Harris, and a few others are starter material here. I even like the TJ Yates pick since he can sit behind schaub and just soak it all in for a year or two or four--That, to me, is how you develop a future starting QB, by getting a solid starter and then finding someone similar, draft him, and sit him as long as you can. Not a fan of the journeyman QBs like Orlovsky. Those guys were drafted to start ASAP and it ruined them, IMO.
