JJ Watt Press Conference (2:30pm central)

It's weird hearing Wade talk about the Texans, after years of hearing him all over the radio for the Cowboys here in the DFW area.
 
good interview with Watt saying all right things and Wade saying more options with Mario now but would go more into "standing up" later.
 
Media: "Wade can you envision Mario standing up and JJ on the line on the same side?"

Wade: "Sure".....lmao!!

Wade: I think a lot of you are saying the same thing: Wow I didnt realize he is that big. He is 6'6. Had largest hands at the combine--Just over 11. Wears size 16 shoe. Hes a big man. He'll get bigger.

Biggest adjustment from college level?
　
Seeing better competition everyday. This is the NFL..

Started to. When I started to land and saw the stadium, it hit me. Cant wait to make this city proud.
　
People used the word solid and ok. How would you respond?
　
Thats fine. I heard about the disappointed people too. Thats fine with me. Coaches have confidence in me and I have confidence in myself. We'll be just fine.
　
Wade: You can say ok but 37 vertical just isnt ok. Thats extraordinary. Size and mobility arent ok stats. This guy is a really good athlete. He is humble. As good as athlete as was up there.
　
You know Wade has had success. Thoughts on playing for him?
　
Excited. Cant wait to work with him. Got a great D mind. He knows what hes doing. Cant wait to fit in.
　
Being from Wisconsin, how much of Packers 3-4 have you watched?
　
Watched a lot of it, every chance I got. It was effective.
　
Where is the ring from?
　
Big 10 championship ring. Want a much bigger one.

I wanted to play football. Didnt matter where. Didnt get many scholarship offers. Walked on to the Badgers, earned scholarship before stepping foot onto the field. Started 2 years and then declared.
　
Texans had problems on D. Trying to get things fixed, how do you feel about being part of it?
　
Excited. They have trust in me and I'll work my tail off to prove they made the right choice.
　
How much hard work do you try to translate into leadership?
　
Anyone can talk, but you have to walk the walk too.
　
HS coach compared you to Howie Long. Idol to you?
　
Hes pretty darn good. Would love to be compared to him. Watched a lot of film on him.

Wanted to play in the NFL. Wasnt going to happen in the MAC catching 8 passes. Some people are just happy playing Division I football. I wanted something much bigger. I took all or nothing shot and it has paid off.

We'll go into it more but gives us versatility with Mario we didnt have before.
　
 
Wow I know some of these players are big and he's huge. Maybe some of it is standing next to Wade but geez and his dad was stout himself. I think the pick was excellent and intelligent. The presser kinda reminds me of Gene Wilder and Peter Boyle in Young Frankenstein when the curtains were raised and then the introduction to the audience ...lol. Hopefully later Wade be saying "I created a monster." lol

It's not just his dad, his mom looked tall enough to play the 5 in the WNBA.

Paraphrased: "I wanted to play in the NFL, and I be damned if I was going to play a position that wouldn't let me compete and show NFL scouts what I can do on a field. So I went out and did it."

This guy doesn't wait for things to happen to him. He goes out and gets it himself.

And all the stuff Wade Phillips is saying about his NFL combine stats? I've been saying the same things: You can't ignore best vertical, second best broadjump, almost the best bench presses, the hands, the feet, the motor, the skills, the desire, the directness he uses when answering.

There's no "pray and hope" attitude with this guy. It's freaking stooopid crazy. I am so jazzed right now.
 
For all practical purposes, looks like Wade is the face of the franchise, atleast in terms of the coaching staff. That's the only one who was on the stand with Watt (except for his parents - and moms a good lookin woman).
But this Watt kid is very likable, personable, smart, and confidant without being cocky.

I'm not reading too much into it.

I'm starting to get good feelings about this upcoming season.

I like the fact that Kubiak has some pressure relieved from him because he has Wade here with him.

Wade has a lot of Head Coaching experience and he knows how to handle certain things. Just something as simple as an interview that he doesn't have to be up on the podium for can feel like a big burden being lifted.

He was passed up by other teams partly because he plays a non-sexy position (not a RB, not a QB, not a WR) and he was partly passed up because he doesn't bring any flash or marketability--He's a hammer and the other guys are gold-plated hammers (Hell, they might be those squeaky hammers a kid plays with).

If we drafted around 15 or lower, I don't think we would have had a shot at JJ Watt on draft day. Our draft position, for what Wade wanted and could get, was juuust right.

He was a good fit on many levels, IMO.

Not only that, but I saw a LOT of mocks that had the Patriots picking him with their #17. They were talking about what a great fit he would be for the Patriots 3-4.

17. New England Patriots: J.J. Watt, DE, Wisconsin. If Bill Belichick and the Patriots are looking for value rather than filling a need with their top pick, Watt is by far the most sensible player for the team. He might be the most sensible from a need standpoint, as well.

1Owning picks 17, 28 and 33, there's no way the Patriots won't move out of at least one of those slots in their habit of ensuring the rich get richer. But given New England's need for a 3-4 defensive end, sticking at 17 and taking the versatile Watt figures to take priority over the search for starters at both offensive line and outside linebacker.

17. New England Patriots: J.J. Watt, DE, Wisconsin. Bill Belichick has been gradually injecting youth to his defense over the past few years; adding the guy Mike Mayock calls the best five-technique end he's ever scouted seems like a good way to continue that process.

Watt, a 6'5", 290-pound defensive end from Wisconsin, is projected to be drafted by New England with the No. 17 overall pick while Reed, a 6'3", 262-pound defensive end from Arizona, is projected to the Patriots at No. 28 overall.

It would be cool if the Texans got Reed at 42. The draft value of #11 and #42(1250+480=1730) total would be pretty darn close to the value of the Patriots #17 and #28 (950+660=1710).
 
Ya know I have tried to play it cool and all but God I can't wait for football start.

You know, I was just thinking earlier today how we didn't hear a word from Kubiak yesterday - and how nice it was. Eyore is usually all over the media representing the Texans on draft day. It was nice to hear from another coach. Maybe Kubiak was in a quiet room playing with his Legos or something.

Very satisfied with the selection of Watt. Seems like the type of player that fits right in with the Texans best.
