Patrick Peterson

Ndevine7

Rookie
If Peterson is available at 6 would u be willing to trade our 1st(1250) and 2nd(480) for Clevelands 1st(1600) and 4th(92)? Or our 1st(1250) 3rd(225) and 4th(84) for Cleveland's 1st(1600)? I am a huge Peterson guy and think he is the next Champ Bailey and we need to get him if we can. What are all your thoughts?

I would be thrilled - and hate to watch those next rounds without a pick. We have many holes, but maybe those impact players are what we really need (Peterson or Von). So if they decide to move up I`d be happy. If they don`t I`d be glad - since other top talents (like Curry) don`t pan out as good as people thought they were, and I´d hate to give up major draft picks to get an ok guy.

Now is the time again to be annoyed by the last regular season win. If I´m correct we`d be picking 6th if we lost. One of those 2 players could fall in our laps at 6, or a trade up wouldn`t be half as costly...

If it only took our first and second this year to do it I could live with it.

Still want to stay put or move down. We need MOAR bodies not less.

I know we need more bodies but not everyday do you come across someone with the talent of Peterson. Drafting Peterson would allow Jackson to be the 2nd CB(where i believe he belongs at least now) and could shut down half of the field (like Revis does and what Bailey used to do).

One big piece is more needed then more bodies. A game changer type on defense can go a long way. I'm not saying give up our whole draft, but 2 picks is worth it.

Tell that to the Vikings with the Herschel Walker trade, the Saints & that Ricky Williams debacle & hell even that SD & ATL deal that netted SD LT & Drew Brees.

Look at our 2006 draft. we had 3 of those guys go on to the pro bowl. 1 of those guys was the DPOY & the other likely would've been a multi pro bowler as he was having a pro bowl-esque type season before he got hurt. The point is you stand to land more of those type of guys with more picks than you would trading away some of those mid round picks to get a guy that statistically speaking only stands a slightly better chance at becoming what everyone thinks he'll be......of course this is all dependent upon you being able to grade talent effectively.

I don't think Cleveland will be willing to trade down. The players they covet will be available at #6 but not at #11.

I think the only way we get Peterson is trading to #2 or #5.

If they pull it off I would be thrilled with it. I'm on record saying Peterson is right now and will be the best player to come out of this draft.

Sorry but this guy won't be the next Champ Bailey but may be the next Ed Reed. He will be a safety. I've read 3 reports now about his weight. In fact I wrote this on here earlier in the week and then saw the link below today. The guy is 219 and when he gets NFL trainers working with him I'm sure he will be in the 220s. No CB plays at that weight, no matter speed. He'll be a safety within a year or two. I also wouldn't give up too much. I'm all for big moves but with a team switching to a 3-4 they might need to concentrate on getting as many of "Wade's Guys" in as possible.

ESPN's Todd McShay, on Mike & Mike, discussing Patrick Peterson: "At 219 pounds ... he may move to safety."

The guy might not necessarily gain weight in the NFL. A lot of guys (admittedly not usually CBs) drop weight when they start working with the NFL strength coaches.

He could, I'm just going on what alot of these guys are saying with his frame..that he could easily carry mid to high 220s and scouts were looking at that.

Here is the additional info I read awhile back

http://www.rotoworld.com/recent/nfl/6481/patrick-peterson

Ex-49ers CB Eric Davis, who started 151 games from 1990-2002, believes Nebraska's Prince Amukamara will be a better corner at the next level than LSU's Patrick Peterson.
"There's a word to describe a 220-pound cornerback: safety," said Davis. "There's no way at that size he can remain at corner with the way the rules are in the NFL." Peterson will enter the NFL as the heaviest corner in the league at age 20. In all likelihood, he's only going to get bigger. When he does move to safety in a few years, he'll be one of the biggest in the league at that position, too. None of this is to say that he's not a "can't-miss" prospect with elite talent

I think a lot of people are falling into the trap of projecting his size only instead of projecting his skills and athletic ability.

I have never seen him in person, but from looking at him I would say that 220 is probably the max on his frame. He is only 6'0" tall. Maybe if I actually saw him in person I would think different but I can only go by what I have seen.

The guy has CB skills that translate directly to the NFL. He also has FS skills so a team could play him there. But sticking him there only because he is big seems like a mistake.

With Rick and Gary drafting you take the sure thing. Miller/Peterson.

You wouldn't trade Texans 1/2 for Clevelands 1/4th?

If you wanted to trade the Texans 3rd and Clevelands 4th you could move back into the 2nd rd and take a pass rusher like Reed/Carter.

Rd.1 Peterson
Rd.2 C.Carter
Rd.4 Powe taken with Houstons pick.

Essentially you would only be trading a 3rd rd pick and swapping places with Cleveland to get Peterson. A small price to pay.IMHO

Maybe we trade up to draft him, let him put on those extra pounds they are all talking about and bingo bango, we have our stud OLB.

Ronnie Lott started out at CB and moved to S. I could see the same thing with Peterson. Not saying Peterson will become Ronnie Lott.

The only knock I have against Peterson is his soph yr he had problems with cramps late in games.

I could see Dallas trading up befor the Texans though.

I say not to give up the whole draft, and you cite two teams who gave up their whole draft...

If you told me he would be the next Ed Reed, I would draft him at 5 or 6. Yesterday.

To me Peterson is the best talent in the draft and one of the best i have seen in a while. Im not suggesting giving up the entire draft but this kid is gonna be one hell of a player

Wade Phillips may see Patrick Peterson as the next Steve Atwater. Atwater was drafted for FS with the Broncos 1st round pick the year Wade Phillips became their Defensive Coordinator. Wade could be thrilled to have a potential Pro Bowl Corner/Safety combo guy and have the luxury of lining him up on the line of scrimmage and moving him around. Interestingly enough, Gary Kubiak was the backup QB on the Broncos while Atwater was there, so they were teammates while Phillips was the DC!

Atwater was drafted out of the University of Arkansas by the Broncos with the 20th pick in the first round of the 1989 NFL Draft. The Broncos began the draft with the 13th overall pick and were hoping to upgrade their defense which had ranked 27th (out of a possible 28) against the run the previous year. Knowing that Atwater would be available in the later parts of the first round, the Broncos traded down to the 20th overall pick owned by the Cleveland Browns who selected Eric Metcalf with Denver's 13th overall pick. Atwater was projected by most as the second-best safety in the draft behind Louis Oliver who was selected by the Miami Dolphins with the 25th overall pick. However, then-head coach Dan Reeves selected Atwater over Oliver because of his leadership skills which Reeves felt were badly needed following the defense's let downs during the 1988 season.

New defensive coordinator Wade Phillips employed Atwater close to the line of scrimmage in order to fortify Denver's run defense and he led the team in tackles, finishing with 129 tackles his rookie season. Denver's defense jumped an 20 spots to finish 7th against the run and tied for 3rd best in yards per carry with a 3.7 yard average. That same year, Atwater finished 2nd to Kansas City's Derrick Thomas in Defensive Rookie of the Year voting. The additions of rookies Atwater and Bobby Humphrey, along with key free agent signings, helped Denver rebound from 8-8 in 1988 to AFC Super Bowl representative in 1989.

Atwater's second season marked the first of seven consecutive Pro Bowl selections (1990–1996), tied for most in franchise history. Over his career, he was selected to the Pro Bowl eight times, second most in franchise history. Early in his career, Atwater teamed with fellow Broncos safety Dennis Smith to form one of the best safety tandems of their generation. Both would later be inducted into the Broncos Ring of Fame. During his 10-year career in Denver, Atwater started in 155 games, tying him for seventh in franchise history for games started. He also started in 14 post-season games.

Exactly. I just don't think they are going to get him. Wade likes he guys in his 3-4 to get the pressure first. I see them sticking or barely moving up to get their rusher for his scheme.

love his athletic ability, unquestioned, its upstairs I fear. just don't want guys who score single digits on the wonderlic, suggests they struggle understanding play book & film study which translates to game day situations where, despite athletic supremacy will be exposed against the big boys.

Peterson has great size. He's a rare, rare physical talent. He's got elite track speed and proven production. He returns kicks for LSU. Instead of some 5'6 160lb guy, they have Peterson doing it because he isn't just a straight line sprinter. He may move to FS, but I have no doubts about him starting at CB in the NFL from day 1.

If you did the Cleveland trade. Then traded back into the 2nd rd using Houston's 3rd and Clevelands 4th and drafted Brooks Reed or Chris Carter. Then signed Ike Taylor in FA the secondary would be fixed and you would have your rush OLB.

Plus your own picks in rds 4/7 to add depth that everybody on this MB is clamouring for.

This is a valid concern.

But CB isn't a position that requires a high IQ. Case in point Deion Sanders. LOL

This is where I am too.

Peterson may very well make a damn good FS. And if you think he will be a better FS than CB then move him there.

But don't move him just because he is "big" for a CB.

Trade our 3rd and Cleveland's 4th to move up mid-late 2nd round and take Sam Acho or Chris Carter (since I think Reed is long gone). Shoot maybe even Akeem Ayers. And I agree, go after the FA CB too to solidify the secondary.

OR! Move the #11, our 3rd and Jacoby Jones for the #6 and their 4th. Maybe they look to continue Jacoby's development and give Colt a weapon. We'd have the 2nd still available for us and puts a late 3rd/early 4th round grade on Jacoby. But he'll make a more immediate impact than most of the WRs in this draft outside Jones/Green. We would have the luxury of packaging both those 4ths together to get a mid/late 3rd rounder if another prospet was falling.

That would essentially have us moving up 5 spots from #11 to #6 by dropping about 15 spots in the 3rd and giving up Jacoby Jones. All this obviously purely hypothetical

Bah, didnt you know that positions have strict size requirements?

Bah, didnt you know that positions have strict size requirements?

They don't but this is how NFL people think and that is why the "safety" talk has been out there. Do you know any 220 CBs in the league? That is what they are saying. I'm just reporting what they are getting from NFL evaluators. I know I trust them more than me or people here.

More on what I was saying above..they extended the time which is better

Multiple GMs & scouts believe Patrick Peterson will have to move to safety "in three to four years." http://bit.ly/dTYks7

http://rotoworld.com/player/nfl/6481/patrick-peterson

Multiple scouts and GMs tell CBS Sports' Clark Judge that Patrick Peterson will likely end up at safety "in three to four years."We've noticed in Peterson's games that he struggles in space, particularly when playing "off" receivers. He's far from a true shutdown corner when giving any kind of cushion. At 219 pounds, Peterson will immediately be the heaviest corner in the league. This isn't to say Peterson will be an ineffective player; he could be plenty dominant at free safety after the switch.

If he is going to end up a safety, why not just start him as a safety and let him learn to play in the NFL there and save the transition pains in 3-4 years.

I really hope this talk makes him slip to wear we can snatch him to play FS for us.

It's funny how nobody ever had any complaints about his abilities as a CB until the weigh in at the combine. Then, all of a sudden he is a FS.

Whatever. I trust my eyes and what I've seen. At either CB or FS, Peterson will be a dominant player.

Hell call him a safety.... but he's a safety that can come up and guard a WR 1 on 1 - and THAT is valuable! I say let's just go ahead and cut the bull and trade up for him. I'm ready for some excitement.

1st and 2nd get us to Arizona. Would they be willing to trade down? Would we be willing to give up the 2nd? I suspect there are a number of teams that would be wanting to move to their spot so it may take more than it 'traditionally' would.

Call him a DB then. That guy in the backfield changes the game.

It would be unreal if that guy ended up a Texan. That would be an inspired move by this organization, nothing less. He looks like Andre Johnson in defensive form.

Yeah, you still gotta go find another pass rusher (or two) minus a couple picks. So what.

And then sign Asomugha while we're dreaming. Peterson/Aso at CB and move Quin and Jackson to safety. Championship.

I can't see us giving up a second and drafting a corner with all the needs we have on the front 7.

Also considering how many good free agents there are in the secondary available.

After draft, you will definitely know whether or not the Texans are going to spend in FA.

BoB spending big in FA = LOL

What is the big deal if he does play FS? Point is, he is an immediate boost to the team. Big, fast, and scary with the ball in his hands. I would argue that he is even more valuable at FS due to the fact that he can play the centerfield role and have more opportunities for picks.

Actually, think about it- Draft Peterson as a FS, sign Aso to stupid money (you have to pay to be the best), and BOOM- starting secondary of Aso - Peterson - Nolan - Quin. Not too bad in my opinion.

I think KJ would look a whole lot better with Peterson behind him and if we had a vet opposite......

This. If it's really going to get everyone's panties in a bunch, ask him to drop a few LB's. Not that big of a deal. Elite talent is elite talent is elite talent.

It's like people are forgetting what he did at LSU and against one of the top WR in the last decade. He put up numbers at the same weight, returned kicks at the same weight. Prince didn't have any interceptions. Weight is a number that doesn't matter; the only number that matters for a DB is turnovers.

3, 5, 6, 0 The four years of Revis career for picks.

0, 0, 0, 8, 1, 1, 1, 0, The career of Nmadi Asomugha.

I think your not quite right in that assesment.

I guess that's fair. Though I did want Revis instead of Okoye. I also didn't follow the draft much when Asomugha came out. With that said, I guess it's also important to look at passes attempted against and pass break ups and completion % against.

Peter King:

The hot prospect: LSU CB Patrick Peterson.

He's probably the one player teams might consider trading up in the top 10 to get. I had Houston moving up to No. 7 to pick him in the first round in my mock draft last week; this week, ESPN's Todd McShay had Houston moving up to number five, dealing with Arizona, to get Peterson. I've been told in the past couple of days that Houston GM Rick Smith is loathe to use so much draft currency to move up from 11 to five or seven to get Peterson (it would likely cost him the Texans' second-round pick to do so).

Let's assume the number two corner on many boards, Prince Amukamara, is available at 11. If you're Smith, you ask yourself: Would I trade Patrick Peterson for Amukamara and any one of three options at positions of need with pick number 42 in the second round -- the third wide receiver (maybe Maryland's Torrey Smith), the first safety (UCLA's Rahim Moore), or maybe the second running back (Mikel Leshoure of Illinois). That's a tough question. The gap between Peterson and the next corner would have to be huge for Houston to do that.
