When do you guys think Wade Phillips will become the texans head coach?
I think it's obvious that if Kubes has another year like the last 5, Phillips will be the obvious choice. He's the perfect man for the local PR machine that is the Houston Texans.

I voted for the third choice in 2012.

Never. If Wade is doing a good enough job to look like he deserves another shot at HC then the Texans will be doing well enough that Kubiak won't be fired.

Oh, I disagree. There have been enough instances of slow starts and poor halftime adjustments on O that if the D significantly improves and the O becomes suspect, I can see this happening at any stage of the season. More realistically towards or at the end of the season, but happeing nonetheless.

They would have to have a pretty good turn around on defense next season if there is one.

Philips outweighs Kubiak by orders of magnitude in Houstons eyes. Phillips is the Son Of Bum. Kubiak went to A&M. Not much competition, from a PR standpoint. If the D turns aound and the O struggles, I think it's a done deal. Kind of like when Reeves was hired before Capers was fired, only for real. LOL

The O would have to regress and I don't see that barring an injury issue.

Poor halftime adjustments on O? - the complaint about last year was slow starts. Seems like the halftime adjustments worked.

The bigger complaint was only playing one half. We put together very few complete games. We were consistently outcoached in second halfs last season.

I don't know whether or not McNair would do something like that...

I'm leaning towards "he'd just let them play out the season and if they suck, fire everyone", but I on the other hand I would not be surprised if McNair found some reason to keep Wade...

WOnt happen This year will be a Great season for the Texans a dream season if u will

im talking #1 or #2 seed in the AFC

Repeating what I've said before: Wade will become head coach mid to early November.

NFL owners no longer care about swapping coaches mid-season. As we've seen, once one owner does it, others will as well.

E. None of the above because A) the season doesn't happen -or- B) the Texans win the Super Bowl only to have an asterick placed next to it, because of a shortened season.... :kitten:

I think McNair keeps Kubiak through the 2012 season, the end of his contract, and then replaces him after it, possibly with Phillips.

Yep.

Also, if Bob didn't fire Caper during the 2-14 season, he's not going to replace Kubes during the season either.

Gary Kubiak: Houston-born, St. Pius HS, Texas ATM
Wade Phillips: Orange-born, UofH, Son-of-Bum

 sheesh, I think its a coinflip. LOL

Ugh. What a depressing thought. When, WHEN Kubes finally makes his noose ready for use can't we do better than Wade Freaking Phillips as HC? He's a proven defensive mind and as far as I'm concerned, a proven bad choice as anyone's HC.

No way, the Texans can get better than Phillips as HC and besides, as of now I want to see him as our DC and nothing more.

One more thing if I may. Since when do the Texans need a PR machine for the sake of PR? Losses are not a good PR machine or in the Texans case, they sadly don't hurt but they absolutely do not help the Texans PR cause.

When you say complete games are you counting the defense on that?

I know where you are coming from and I generally agree. If our defense is even marginally better (i.e. ranked 20th or so) and our offense can at least replicate their success of the past two seasons, we will end up with a winning season and perhaps our first playoff berth. In this scenario, expect Kubiak to sign a 10 year deal akin to Landry's in his early years. McNair might even build a Kubiak statue for the front of Reliant.

I'm not even sure if 9-7 and no playoffs gets Kubiak fired. I can see McNair holding his ground for another year in this case.

However, there are other factors to consider. There is no guarantee that our offense will be as successful. Like any other team, we are an injury or two away from being mediocre. And McNair will no doubt grant Wade at least a two year window to implement a new defensive scheme. No way does he expect Wade to go from historically bad to great in a single season.

It is this second possibility that I see another potential 5-7 season. And I honestly think McNair would be looking to fire Kubiak if that happens again. He would not do it mid-season (I would be surprised if he ever fires a HC during a season), but certainly he'd have a next to impossible time making a case for Kubiak with a 5-7 record. If this happens, and I hope with all my heart that it does not happen, I could see Wade promoted to HC for the 2012 season.

Are you predicting a shortened season because 5-7 is only 12 games or I guess you are referring to the past few years' starts? I am not advocating anything either. Folks were asking for a prediction. As a prediction I don't see the O getting worse absent a critical injury which would be AJ, Schaub or Foster. In that event I think McNair will say "damn lose a key pro-bowler and things go down hill." The only way I see Wade taking over is the offense takes a dive without injuries and the D has dramatically improved. I hope Wade will dramatically improve the D and actually expect him to do so. I see no reasonable prediction the O will dramatically fall off without a key injury. So I just don't see the Wade becomes HC scenario. 9-7 and they make the playoffs - Kubiak is back. 9-7 and they don't on tie breakers I think most likely he is back unless the O has taken a major dive. Below that I expect the D didn't improve all that much and the whole group gets flushed. I just don't see Wade as the HC in waiting. If he does well enough to be considered for the position, then the Texans will do well enough Kubiak won't be fired.

When will Wade become the HC?? Hopefully never. If that happens the Texans will never win anything. They might end up going to the playoffs at some point, but Wade is to soft to lead a team all the way. His teams in Dallas were stacked. Wade is not HC material. Hell, I don't think he's even DC material on a team like the Texans who have a soft coach already in place. Wade is a great DC, but he needs to be on a team that has a strong minded HC in charge where the team is a lot more disciplined.

If Wade does become HC here, it will be another 4 to 5 years of false hope. Even most Dallas fans knew that he wasn't a good hire when he was hired there. Jerry wanted him because he was the opposite of Parcells whom he couldn't control and Wade was perfect because he was laid back and would do what Jerry wanted.

I don't know when or if Wade will become HC.....

I can tell you what I will do if he DOES become HC though...

:runsthroughstreetnakedthrowingfecalmatter: and then :gun:

WOW. This has been an insightful thread. I started it just for fun in a boring offseason. Lots of good opinions.

I like Wade as the dc. I just didn't like the pr crap leading up to his hiring and keeping Kubiak as hc. This team will never succeed imho as long as Bob, Smith and Kubiak are making decisions. Bob is extremely football stupid and it causes him to make some really head scrating decisions.

Wade Phillips is being brought in to fix the defense. If that doesn't happen, why would they make the guy that couldn't do that the head coach? I think if Kubiak struggles that mightily, and it's obviously not the fault of the defense, the more likely scenario is he plays out the season and is replaced next year by a more experienced coach. I bet Dom Capers will be ready to be a head coach again by that time. :)

A better question would be:

After Wade Phillips becomes head coach, how long will it take HuttoKarl to smash his nads with a car batter in order to feel again?

Wade can always claim that he only had one draft to work with, so it's all the other guys fault.

Well, i voted for Losing or even record or miss the playoffs.

Oh well. It NOT LIKE WE'RE NOT USED TO THIS CRAP! :toropalm:

see i don't get this argument... u have slow downs in a game, u have good quarters and bad quarters. Every team has them I think the real issue is that when we play bad we play terrible like wtf was that kind of terrible. when we play good we play great but there is such a drop off between the two.

All of that is great, but at the end of the day we too often don't play well enough to win.

Bad halves, bad quaters, bad plays, bad games...WTF ever...

I guess this is a fitting time to say it as any but...JUST WIN BABY, WIN....

I don't think Kubiak gets fired after this season. I think they'll do well enough to beat out the other teams in the division where we back into the playoffs, and whether we do or we don't won't matter much, because Mcnair and Kubiak's supporters have already given him his 100th built in excuse for this season which will be AJ and Mario's injuries. We all know that Bob considers Gary like a son any way.

I agree completely. I have asked several times for fans to point me in the direction of any credible evidence that McNair has lit a fire under Kubiak's seat this season, and there is not even a shred of it being presented.

6-10 or better and Kubiak keeps his job. McNair's "on the right track" mentality, along with his fear of change, undying loyalty, disregarding performance markers, not to mention the lockout/new DC/star player injuries excuses...errr...reasons...heck, I think I've convinced myself to keep Kubiak through 2020! :rake:

If you remember when we first hired Wade, I predicted that it probably prolonged more years for Gary, because Bob would feel like Gary needs more time to get this new defense gelled in with his game plans and the entire team. Bob probably feels like he put the fix on this team already with Wade. After all, the games are still packed with fans, Manning is gone, and Kubiak is still a greatfull coach with a great attitude win or lose. :clown:

I think a strong hearted GM would have to cause Bob to fire Gary, and our GM's status is more than likely tied in with Gary's unfortunately. ANd we could go 8-8 or barely 9-7 and get absolutely swallowed in the first round of the playoffs by like 45 points, and you can bet that Gary will get that extension.

I still want BC to lead this team! Wade can stay as DC! I'm just sick & tired, tired & sick of 6 yrs of very "shitty" football lead by Smihiak! Texans Fans everywhere deserve better!:toropalm:

I don't think BC wants to coach for any team any time soon. :toropalm:

Does anyone else have the horrible feeling that Kubiak has now got his excuses for the season (Mario done, Dre out for a while, Foster out early on etc) and it no longer matters about his record, because of what he had to battle against?

Thing is, we've had years and years of the same old ****, last year wasn't enough to get rid of him why would this year?

I like Phillips okay as a D coordinator, but if he ever becomes head coach it will be too soon. Unfortunately, you know that's McNair's plan B.
