Saw this pity piece on ESPN.com for the players.

You're thinking: I'm on the owners' side in this lockout mess because NFL players are all spoiled, hat-backward millionaires who will no more miss a year's salary than they'll miss their eighth Lexus.

OK, but maybe you should meet …

… Brian Schaefering, Cleveland Browns defensive lineman.

He has a wife, three kids -- all 8 and under -- and a rented house. He doesn't have a shoe deal or a Lloyd's of London policy or a super agent willing to float him till this is over.

Yeah, he's got a safety net -- himself.

"I'll do anything," says Schaefering, 27. "If I have to work for UPS, I will. I got a family to feed. I've paved roads, fixed roofs, done landscaping. I'm not better'n anybody else. I don't want any handouts. I'd be happy with $12 an hour if I could get it."

You hear anything about Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones wanting to run a road paver lately?

"The problem is," Schaefering says, "who wants to hire a guy who may have to pack up and leave [for the NFL] a month or two into it?"

So Schaefering and his wife are cutting back. They slashed their cable and cell phone bills and chopped their weekly date nights considerably. They used to get a babysitter, then catch dinner and a movie. "Now, it's put the kids to bed and slap in a DVD."

You're thinking: What the hell has he done with his money he has made so far in the NFL?

Well, he went undrafted in 2008, barely made the practice squad in '09 and finally started nine games for the Browns last season, making $395,000. He says he netted just over $200,000 after taxes. And he had plenty of bills to pay going into last year.

"I hear people joking around about this thing, but it's no joke," he says. "If this goes into the season, my wife might start panicking a little."

I'm sorry, but where is the vomit smilie when you need it? Seriously? This guy has the nerve to whine about only making $400,000 for one years worth of work? Because he had bills to pay?


This piece, coming out at a time when many regular Americans can't even find a days work, is just the final slap in the face to me. I can't believe they thought I'd feel sorry for a guy because he only nets 200k after taxes.

Yes, the article goes on to talk about potential draft picks that may or may not get a chance to play. I still dont feel sorry for them.

I now dislike the owners and the players equally. They are both trying their best to get the fans sympathy and doing a wonderful job of spitting in our faces in the process.
 
$200,000 ought to go a long way in Cleveland. I can't imagine 3 little kids and wife would cost more than 50k a year with reasonable expenses. If he's having trouble with movie date nights and DVD rentals, just get Netflix for $10 a month. It's cheap and easy!

There's no reason to pity the players, and ESPN is doing the players a disservice by running such an article. However, all you ever hear about is Player XYZ making millions of dollars a year. That conditions the public in at least two ways: first, it overlooks the players who really do not make millions and may not last more than a year or two. Second, it conditions the public to have a knee-jerk envy reaction to the players, when the owners are raking in hundreds of millions of dollars. But because you don't see "Jerry Jones Nets $400M Dollars in 2010" headlines (totally made up number), people don't think about it. Meanwhile, player salaries are splashed across headlines and websites.

Both players and owners are responsible for this problem, and while I can debate points of merit on both sides of the dispute, I don't feel sorry for either side.
 
Umm, the players don't get paychecks during the offseason anyways. Why is this cat already bitchin when it's no different than any other year...yet.

The thing is we all live up to means. So he made $400K which means he has $600K worth of bills.

Just like you or I would do. Make $50K but have $70K in bills.

Thats just the thing, they paint him as living extremely modestly.

He can't afford to hire a babysitter. He has to watch a DVD he already owns. Hes willing to work for $15 an hour.

All that is BS to me, and makes the players look like whiners

Hi, Mr. Shaefering. I'd like to introduce you to Saturday night at the Oye household.

It's not so bad. We have, after all, a house, some DVDs, a DVD player, and a infectiously loveable daughter. All things I increasingly feel pretty damned lucky to have (especially with regard to the lives that some of the kids my wife or I work with and teach).
 
Lets do the math on this.

200,000 / 16 - game checks comes out to be 12,500 a check. 12, 500.

Lets see what i could do with 1 of those checks.....

i could pay my mortgage up for oh, i don't 6 months & still have money left over to not only pay all my bills for the month, but also pay off a car that i've got a little under a year to finish on...eh that might be stretching it a bit...maybe just pay it down to the last few months.!! keep in mind i have 2 kids as well.


Yeah, 200,000 just don't buy what it used to anymore.....:sarcasm:

Yeah, it's tough to feel sorry for any of these guys, even the ones making a league minimum.

I've never understood the massive house and dozen cars in the garage thing. Why not just buy a more modest house outright with that first contract so you don't have a note? Why not 'settle' for two cars, one for each parent?

It's funny that this article ends up doing the exact opposite of what the writer probably intended. But for the average person, none of us can really relate or even care about someone who blows that kind of dough.

That's what irresponsible people do who should get no sympathy and are completely uncreative in how to stretch a dollar. Nice way to excuse stupidity.
 
Finally some people are starting to see some of what I've been saying for months. These NFL athletes have been living a fantasy for far to long and not just in the NFL, but in all the 3 big sports. Their pay has been going up and up and up the last two decades. At some point you've got to cut that increase off or when does it ever get out of hand?? Eventually players lose their motivation to play hard. They get way to much of a sense of entitlement and they have so much money to throw around that they become just irresponsible.

I've been with the owners on this since day one. The owners have at least earned their money in most cases and earned the right to buy an NFL team and decide how to make a profit there. These athletes are just spoiled guys that hit the genetic lotto when they were born and play a sport that tons of people would play if they could for pennies if it could just pay their bills and allow them to make a living.

Now these athletes have spent money like crazy for years and years and want to ***** because they can't buy as many cars and everything else and cry because they have no liquid capital. Well if you have no liquid capital EVEN ON 200,000 a year, then I'm sorry but you're just a dumbass. I could take that kind of net income and make it last several years with no problem and live comfortably and go on a ton of exotic vacations. These guys want to act irresponsible with money all this time and now that checks might not be coming in, we've got guys saying I don't know what to do. Well you should have thought about that when you bought that $300,000 dollar necklace of bling and when you bought all those cars and all those bar tabs worth several thousand dollars every week.

The owners aren't trying to restructure anything to where the players won't still make Millions and hundreds of thousands of dollars. They easily will, but they want more. At some point you've got to say that enough is enough and I've seen far to many NFL athletes go broke after they play football because of how irresponsible they are and how they spend and not to mention the crimes I hear about every other day when these guys have such great opportunities. I have no sympathy for these spoiled rotten players.

This goes for ALL entertainers. Athletes are nothing but entertainers at the end of the day, and like music, television, and movie stars, they value themselves based upon the importance that we in society place on them.

I'd be more inclined to agree with you if the owners weren't the bunch of scam artists that have convinced the citizens of all these cities to divert finite funds from critical infrastructure to build their sports playground palaces.

All that garbage I heard spewed about being a so-called "first class city" because of friggin' sports teams??? Give me a break! A first class city would have fundamental aspects taken care of, like good roads, water and sewage systems, schools that arent' falling apart, and so on. Sports teams really provide very little value to the health and vitality of a city with the exception of being entertained, and there is very little entertainment value when teams suck like all of our do right now.

Rep. I never understand how people can blast off on a player for doing whatever he can to make whatever he can (especially when they'd do the same), but then excuse the owners for doing the same thing X100. If you're pissed off/jealous that the players make a million bucks, then you should be 100 times as pissed off that the owners make 100M bucks ON THE BACKS OF THE TAXPAYERS. And if you go buy a ticket, you're paying the owners to maintain a stadium that you paid for, in some form or fashion.

The players risk their lifelong health and even life, to some degree. The owners risk ..... what? Going broke? When's the last time an owner went broke? When is the last time an owner couldn't meet payroll?

I have no sympathy for either side, but it seems to me the pro-owner group presents some completely irrational arguments.

These guys reported Harrell signed a 1.2 million dollar 3 year deal, which would mean he makes about what Schaefering makes.

Harrell just sounds to me like he's (A) childless and (B) frugal. Whatever the reasons he's got more in his piggy bank than the Browns' player. Harrell will be ok if there's a lockout.

He was released and then resigned to the practice squad. Remember the NFL can cut you and then they don't have to live up to the contract. On the original contract there's a chance he didn't realize any money from that contract, unless it was guaranteed.
 
Not that I'm old but I don't think I've made 200 G's in my entire time working. I'm not exactly struggling on significantly less money. It's not even like 200,000 is all that much money. I mean, I'd have some cool things to look at too but one of them would be looking at my bank account and seeing at least half of that saved or invested.

That just breaks my freakin heart. I wonder how he would like to work the hours I do in the places I do. There's a reason Nigeria is pretty low on 99% of the world's vacation destiniations. Iraq is pretty low, too.
