Veteran
Well...they should be. The Texans entered the league in 2002 by picking their "veterans" in an expansion draft. Teams don't exactly put their top talent in expansion drafts. They put players that have high cap values or just not very good players. Few quality free agents want to play for expansion teams because they usually aren't successful for a long time. We received a few extra draft picks but not really enough to "stock a team" with starters from the draft after only 4 drafts.
We have had an expected poor record in our first 3 seasons. The thought is that we should be one of the worst teams for a few seasons, get high draft picks and solidify our team with quality. We were one of the worst teams over those 3 seasons with a 16-32 record. We haven't had the 1st pick since the expansion year draft. Only one team was worse than us in EACH of the 3 seasons we've played. You guessed it...Detroit.
Detroit has a 14-34 record over the past 3 seasons. They've drafted ahead of us each season. They have drafted a combined 7 draft spots higher in the first rounds alone. Detroits team was already estabished. Their draft picks have had veterans that have been with the team for years. Their QB had an established o-line to begin playing with.
Detroit is a great measuring stick for where our team is and where it should be. Detroit SHOULD be better than us. They haven't been since we've been in the league but...this year, with one game in played, they have us beat. They are clearly the best team of the 2. Joey managed to get 167yds and has a 95 passer rating against last season's 25th best defense. Carr had a horrible outing managing only 70 yds with a 12 passer rating against last season's 31st worst defense. As you can see, Harrington is clearly better than Carr and Detroit is a monster!
Seriously though, I feel that Detroit is a good team to keep an eye on. They are closer to a sister expansion team than the Browns. We have in the past and should continue to mirroring them in the standings. The AFC and AFC South is hands down tougher than the NFC and NFC North but it should still be close.
Go Texans! Go Lions!
Disclaimer: This post was posted because I LOVE GEEKS. Just a little razzing since I saw Joey 95 > Carr 12. There's a little sarcasm and some word twisting but I feel the bulk of it is true. All in good fun.
