Texans' Ryans endows $300K scholarship at his alma mater

Houston Texans linebacker DeMeco Ryans on Thursday announced he is endowing a scholarship in his name at the University of Alabama, his alma mater.

Ryans, 26, who has started for the Texans since the team selected him in the second round of the 2006 draft, pledged $300,000 for the scholarship, which will go to a Crimson Tide football player studying in the university's Culverhouse College of Commerce and Business Administration.

"I have always wanted to do this since the day I left," Ryans said in a statement released by the university. "The University of Alabama is such a special place to me, and I am honored to have the opportunity to endow a scholarship. I had a great time here, and I grew as a person here. This is a great time for me, and I am very excited."

Ryans, an All-American linebacker and Southeastern Conference Defensive Player of the Year as a senior in 2005, graduated cum laude in December 2005 with a bachelor's in business marketing. He received that fall the NCAA's Top VIII Award, which recognizes achievement in athletics, scholarship and community service, and the Lott Trophy, which honors a defensive player for his character and on-field accomplishments, and was a finalist for the Butkus (best linebacker), Draddy (so-called academic Heisman) and Nagurski (top defensive player) awards.

"DeMeco Ryans made a tremendous difference as one of the finest players to ever wear crimson and white," university president Robert E. Witt said in the release. "With this gift, he will continue to make a tremendous impact for the team and the university."

Ryans was the Associated Press' NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2006, when he totaled 155 tackles and 3.5 sacks. He earned Pro Bowl selections in 2007 and 2009. His 2010 season was cut short when he ruptured his left Achilles' tendon in an Oct. 17 victory over Kansas City.

You would expect a fine man like Ryans to do something like this. Why can't we have more NFL player like Ryans? We hear too many of off the field problems and not enough great news like this. Hoping for a full recovery DeMeco!

Classy guy who's responsible, mature, and got his head screwed-on right. I'm happy that DeMeco got paid by McNair so he has the opportunity to do such things as this to pay back soceity. And I got a pretty strong hunch that DeMeco has a nice, diversified financial portfolio to take care of himself and family over the long-term in lieu of gobs and gobs of bling and flashy wheels.
 
ryans jersey was the first one i got, i had to get it from nfl.com. nice to see you can find it anywhere now. i was so glad when he got his extension.
 
Love me some D-Ryans! Always have, since he played with Bama. I love watching defense so I'd find myself watching their games quite often. He was basically the centerpiece in that D. Still can't beleive he fell as far as he did in the draft.

I have no doubt he'll be back and crackin faces this season
 
I love me some 'Meco and it is awesome he gave back, but not so sure I get excited about scholarships left for football players......... (let the flaming begin)
 
However ESPN will not report any of this because it is a player doing great things vs being mad about making millions and/or playing for The New York Jets.

Ehh i don't agree.. ESPN gets a bad wrap for that. They report good stories all the time. I first heard about Charles Woodson's 2 million dollar donation to his alma mater children's center or something through espn.

The problem is that there are so many more athletes doing not so good things that it drowns out stories of the opposite.
 
And if it was Amobi Okoye, the people screaming about him concentrating on football instead of all that charitable work would be lined up waiting to piss and moan.

For instance - I am pretty sure it is mandatory for every Texan to have a charity (see, south endzone). So figure if on most teams half of players do big charity things, multiplied by number of teams, multiplied by the major sports.....

I think only the MAJOR donations are headline worthy or they would have to have a weekly show to cover all major sport's athelete's donations.
