MIAMI -- Miami Dolphins quarterback Chad Pennington has a torn knee ligament and will undergo surgery next week.

Pennington tore the anterior cruciate ligament while playing pickup basketball, according to Creative Artists, his representation agency. CAA's release did not say which knee he hurt.

The 34-year-old Pennington will have surgery performed on April 7 by noted orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews.

A two-time AP Comeback Player of the Year, Pennington's season was shortened in 2010 when he underwent his fourth right shoulder surgery. He is a free agent.

I like Pennington, seems like a great guy. He's got some unfortunate bad luck, that's for sure. Hope he's able to come back from this in some way.

We should get Pennington into our coaching pipeline. That guy would make a helluva coach someday.

Pennington was a great QB that one year in Miami. He was an MVP candidate that year. That was the last season he was healthy. The years he was healthy in NY he was very consistent. I think he'd be a great coach myself.

Vinny and I had several discussions that if you could put Chad's head on Carr's body you would have a truly elite QB. Didn't work out that way for either one.

That would be scary. Pennington had a weak arm, but he could work the field with his noodle passes and could get it done. His cement shoes always got him injured though.

Trying to look at the bright side you have to consider that this sets him up for an epic, never before done, probably never will be broken 3rd comeback players of the year award.

If you could put Pennington's head on most QBs, you'd have an elite QB. I truly believe the guy has an understanding of the game and reading defenses that rivals Manning. He just didn't have the physical package.

Need to get those smarts in the Texans organization.

Pennington was a pretty good athlete coming out of Marshall. His arm wasn't great, but on the level of pre-2010 Schaub. But, Pennington had a rotator cuff injury in 2004 and never could get much on the ball after that. How he continued to have success is pretty amazing.

Pennington was a Rhodes Scholarship finalist, so he's probably too smart to enter the NFL coaching world of 80 hour work weeks. He was a journalism major, so Pennington will likely become a broadcaster.

That's what I meant. He has had a couple shoulder injuries (maybe three?). Now this. His body just didn't hold up for him is what I meant.

Guys, a lil bit offtop, but maybe you can help? Who knows good services for organizing pick up games? Been only on trytopic.com and want to compare

I don't know their name but if you go out past West Oaks mall, on the right, just past Millie Bush Bark Park you'll find a receptive group.
