Home Jerseys & Roof Open

Hot times

Houston's Reliant Stadium has a retractable roof that likely will be open for Sunday's game, which starts at 1 p.m.

"I would like to have it closed with the air conditioner on," Cowher said. "Somehow, I don't think they will do that. We will have our black jerseys on, but we had them on last week in 90-degree weather. We will be all right."

Pretty sure they the texans will wear white-

Cool. It's already in his head.

90 degree weather last week in Pittsburgh? Yeaaahright.
Here's their weather almanac from last Sunday when they played the Titans at home:

Max Temperature 82 °F
Min Temperature 57 °F
Dew Point 50 °F
Average Humidity 54

Cowher's boys in for a rude awakening if the Texans finally wise up and keep the roof open on a early season game against a black uniformed opponent.

But unfortunately, they will probably yield once again to the fan comfort aspect. I say screw fan comfort - we need every advantage we can get.

Believe it or not, it has been in the 90's for the past couple of weeks or high 80's. VERY unusual weather this time of year.

Must be something to it. Down here last week, the Broncos looked gassed against the Dolphins after the first quarter. On-field temp was measured at 100 degrees (but that's kinda like the "heat index," a stat designed to make things sound worse than they are) and the Broncos went down the tubes quickly. Houston has all the heat and humidity to compete with that advantage used in Miami.

A somewhat-related side note: the Broncos have never won a game in Miami. Ever.

I was in favor of closing the roof to make it louder, but let's go with the heat!

Hate the color or our record in those uni's?

Not sure of the Texans record in those uni's but from the talk it seems to fire up the fans more, add that to it being the home opener and I don't want to see it......

Actually IMO they are the nicest looking Texans uni's......not as good as the Steelers Black & Gold ones....but better than most in the league...

I wonder if they'll wear bags over their heads instead of helmets.

FYI...I like the red, then the white, then the blue uniforms.

I second that notion. Sunblock and water will meet my comfort needs as long as it helps out the team.

Keep the roof open!!

*EDIT*--Sunday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 94.

No doubt, man. I get kinda' embarrassed about the softness of some of our fans when you see shirtless guy in the frozen tundra of Green Bay during December. Heck, all them northern teams in late season have some crazy fans.

And we have people that are scared to perspire.

I believe someone is aware of the power of our Battle Red. :texflag:

It may have been near 90 up there in Penn, but we have a secret weapon. It can take down the strongest man on any day, and all of us live with it here in Houston and have built an immunity (some better than others).
What is it?

HUMIDITY.

I was born and raised here in Houston so I am well aware of what the weather is like....

since I will be at the game....I vote for roof closed......

Either the fans up there think 85 degrees is Hades or they can't read a thermometer.

Weather.com says 86 has been the highest high for the last week with most of the past week around 80. Let's see if they think 85 degrees, 50% humidity with a heat index of 87 feels the same as 95 degrees, 75% humididty and a heat index of 105+. The heat obviously affected the Raiders in the 2nd half last year.

So Steeler fans want roof closed, so open it is.

I know that I'm in the minority on this, and a win is a win, but I just don't think it makes all that much difference if we beat a great team in September at home because they wore black uniforms and we had the roof open. If and when we meet them in the playoffs there's not going to be any 75% humidity to rely on. We're either better than they are or we're not.

Safe to say right now that we're not.

I am happy for you that you were born here. Thank you for pointing that out. My day is now complete.

Cowher isn't fully realizing the power of Houston's humidity. THAT is what I was pointing out.

Since I am at every home game....
ROOF OPEN! :fans:

He has played in Miami early in the season and I am sure that the weather here is not going to be a surprise....what did you expect him to say? "Please Texans, close the roof....my guys won't stand a chance with it open"....

He is acclimated to up north. If you are not here and dealing with it on a regular basis, it is quite debilitating to face. Whether you have in the past or not.
This will not win the game (roof closed), but it puts more stress on Pittsburgh to perform harder in harsher conditions.
That is no picnic.

not that it is exactly the same, but the Houston cougars played Oregan a few weeks ago and left the roof open....it seemed to affect the coogs more than the ducks.....(granted, the ducks just had more talent)

The Cougs didn't know how to perform in low humidity conditions. :)

I was going to ask the same thing.

Especially at age 39, CoolieMan already knows what the Steelers mean to this town...."Luv Ya Blue" ring any bells?

Interesting to note that you're not a Pirates fan, though... :hmmm:

GO TEXANS! :texflag:

Yes I do....I loved the games in the 70's....half my family was rooting for the Steelers and half for the Oilers....made for great fun during and after the game.....like when Renfro was juggling the ball when he went out of bounds in the AFC Championship game in '79.......

Doesn't make a difference?

Best Record in the Month of September = Miami Dolphins
I think Green Bay has the best record in the Winter months.

It would make all the sense in the world to make the stadium as hot is possible. That is if the goal is to win.

I don't know if having the the roof open is that much of an advantage. Our players will be too hot, and theirs will be a little bit more too hot. Everybody will be too hot.

As a runner in this heat, I find no matter how much you acclimate it is still draining.

I might add that training in the heat and humidity does make you feel very strong when you work out in a cooler environment.

Black and GOLD? That always cracks me up...it's clearly black and YELLOW.

The 49ers wear gold, the Steelers wear yellow.

With that said, the Steelers do have one of the best uniforms in the league.

And I just forwarded a notation to the same front office to be sure and REMEMBER all the comments that were sent to them last year, and during the off season, about the heat problem. :)

I still can't figure out why you macho guys think the heat will only effect the Steelers and not the Texans! Just because they will be wearing black?? They are TOUGH, and I don't think that will bother them what-so-ever! The organization will provide coolers for both teams down on the sidelines, so what difference does it make. The heat will not get to Rothliesburger (sp) but the NOISE will!!! Close the roof and then blow the sucker off!!! NOISE will effect that team much more than the heat!

As a person that has played football in the Houston heat, albeit in High School, noise can be blocked out and ignored, that heat and humidity can not be. That kind of heat and humidity is a palpable force in itself, but once you add the pads and the body heat of 70,000 people, it can be debilitating. With that kind of heat, you can't drink enough water, and if you aren't used to it, you are at a distinct disadvantage.

It isn't the thoughts of macho guys. You may not think it will bother them but history shows it WILL have an effect.

Fact - Historically Cold Weather teams struggle in september in the heat against southern teams.

The Texans need every edge they can get.
There is no color hotter than BLACK. It absorbs light/heat.
There is no color cooler than WHITE. It relects light/heat.

Air Conditioning is for the movie theater, not football.

A stadium can still be very very loud with the roof open. Some of the loudest crowds in the NFL play in open roof stadiums.

Funny, it worked for us against the Raiders last year and it worked for Miami against Denver last Sunday:

It was a long day for the Broncos. They lost cornerback Champ Bailey and running back Mike Anderson to injuries, wilted in the 90-degree South Florida heat and fell to 0-7 in Miami.

"We knew it was going to be difficult to come in here and deal with the elements in their backyard," said coach Mike Shanahan, now 10-3 in season openers with Denver and Oakland.

I'm not sure how much temperature really helps one team over another. Remember when the Texans were heavy underdogs and went up to play Pittsburgh on a freezing day? I think they ended up beating the Steelers 24-6 or something like that. Both teams have to play in the same conditions.

It matters a lot.

I was a really good Tennis player in High School (28-0 my sophmore year, JV team).
I moved up to the Chicago area from Houston in the middle of High School. I started training indoors with the guys from the team. I could beat everyone who was not a Senior pretty easily. They told me that once the spring season began it was going to be different because it could be quite cold and windy. We went outdoors and I lost 8 straight matches to opponents I had crushed indoors. I was shocked how much the cooler weather and wind affected my play, Eventually I adapted and began to win consistently but it took a while to adjust. Also at the end of the season as summer approached those "hot days" didn't seem very hot to me after living in Houston.

If you can't take the sun, sit in the shade. There's at least half a stadium's worth of seats that never see a ray of sun. The roof was for the rodeo anyway.

I was in Chicago last year for the Texans game and will never again complain about the sun or it being too hot. And Yes, I sit in the sun 3/4 of the game.

not sun, heat, wind, rain, or even a tornado will save us from total carnage this sunday... it's hard for the steelers defense to overheat in just 3 plays.

The roof was designed for INCLIMENT weather, and the rodeo. They close it for a THREAT of rain, and leave it open when it's so hot it's dangerous. Doesn't make much sense!! To bad Reliant is NOT an open air stadium. That would make sitting in the sun a little more tolerable. A hole in the roof just don't cut it for air circulation.

What about the four home games the Texans lost last year to the BROWNS, COLTS, CHARGERS, PACKERS?

The Browns, Colts and Packers aren't necessarily teams that are use to playing in heat, yet they were able to beat the Texans last year.

The heat may effect the outcome of the game, but I doubt that it will be a noticeable advantage that the Texans will be able to use to win the game.

Everybody take a guess what the Texan players would say if they had the option for open or closed. Disregard the standard "I'll play anyway they have it yada yada yada" answer - what would they tell their buddies in a bar?

My guess: closed

Ummm, thanks for joining us. Did I say heat was kryptonite?--no, just that it may help. Got a reason not to use any advantage?
