What are we doing right now?

El Tejano

Hall of Fame
I'm seeing all these teams interviewing and workingout players and none of them are the Texans. Am I to expect are annual thumb sitting is going on right now?

So Curtis Brown CB of UT is getting some looks by teams for the draft. The teams are:

Steelers
Patriots
Ravens
Browns

Steelers run a 3-4, and the Patriots and Ravens run versions of the 3-4. All 3 of those teams made the playoffs last year. The Browns seem to be doing what we need to be doing. Looking around where the succesful teams are looking around. Appearantly Steelers, Patriots and Ravens think this guy is worth kicking the tires on in the later rounds. Shouldn't we at least look too. Would be helpful to know if we are. Or are we too busy ignoring the Texas CB because there's a young A&M QB that we would like to waste a pick on?

CBS Rob Rang reported that the Texans were one of 15 teams that were at Davon House pro day. He ran a 4.32 and a 4.35. If he's there in the 2nd rd. He should be the Texans pick. He can turn and run as good as any CB in this draft.

Oh yee of little faith.

LOL

Big fan of House. Maybe the best pure man corner in this draft.

All I'm looking for. Thanks for that info. Sounds like a good player. Still think we need to snoop around where the playoff teams are. Especially since we are drafting in front of teams like Steelers and Ravens, would be nice to send a smoke screen to them too just to see if they'd like to trade up.

CB was the Cowboys target in second round, assuming they take OT in first. It was real close between Curtis Brown & Davon House, I replayed tape & combine excerpts over & over coming to the conclusion that Brown has a higher ceiling based off his ball skills & short area explosion/change of direction. House finished workouts ranked 15th out of 34 for position while Brown ranked 7th. FYI

Brown is the better athlete.

I do think that House will turn out the better player though, and that's not a shot at Brown.

Curtis has so much potential (Tracy Porter) something a team like the Cowboys like. Far as Texans they would probably go House, he seems safer, pretty well put together all around game (Leon Hall).

I totally agree. And I think those are accurate comparisons.

Would be nice if our scouts knew about this dude and we could participate in his Pro Day:

Once again I'm seeing a guy like Prince Amukamara, who has a pretty good chance of dropping to us and a whole bunch of teams setting up a visit with him:

BengalsPatriots (who are nowhere near in the area of where he may go in the draft, but acting like a playoff team does and doing the due dilligence.)
Panthers
Browns
49ers
Cowboys
Redskins
Buccaneers
(also a team picking behind us but still doing their dilligence)

And no sign of The Texans looking at him.

You have to be careful with this kind of stuff. Teams often send scouts to player pro days just to get an idea of who actually is looking a particular player; Sometimes they may have little to no interest in the player at all. Either way, That info is valuable on draft day if a particular player falls & you know what which teams might be interested in trading up to get that player. It also helps them set their draft boards as well.

And that sounds like something we should try doing too.

I wish we had interest in this guy:

I guess we don't want the Longhorn CBs? Dudes have some impressive pro days. I didn't hear about us over there.

It's not what we do.

I wouldn't read too much into who we are looking at now in regards to draft day decisions...

That said...I wouldn't get too enthusiastic about their draft day picks regardless...

The Texans aren't at rock bottom, but they have sucked anyways. Their gonna have to earn the benefit of the doubt. Until then whatever they do will be met with skepticism. They've earned that.

I don't know, the lockout's not slowing other teams down what so ever. I don't see any harm throwing fans a bone to keep them engaged & renewing season tickets, instead their low key approach is borderline clandestine.

Or maybe our approach is we will wait til the season starts to see our areas of need and try to plug in street free agents and see how they do.

showing up @ pro days, or scheduling prospects to come in & work out. as it relates to whats allowed during the draft process, its always been this way.

So we have crappy local reporting. Thinking we know where every Texan scout is or who they talk to is foolish.

If it's not shouted from the roof tops then obviously they're doing nothing. Heck, they'll probably draw names out of a hat. :sarcasm:

Pretty much...there needs to be an espn bottom line ticker detailing every person in the FO moves for some in here to believe things....

I'd understand all that if I didn't just read that 31 other teams have reported they've met with over 10 or more prospects. Meanwhile, the Texans have only reported 2.

That list isn't what the teams have reported. It is a collection of every rumor or news report.

Okay, so today I'm reporting some news to show the other side of the story that supports that we really don't know what the team is doing right now. In this link

http://blogs.nfl.com/2011/03/31/stephen-f-austin-lb-williams-gives-scouts-a-look/

Gil Brandt reports that Bengals LB coach and representatives for 10 other teams went to Stephen F Austin's Pro Day. No mention of The Texans.

However, last night on Sirius Radio's NFL Network the same Gil Brandt was talking with a Texan's fan and mentioned that we indeed were there at the Stephen F Austin Pro Day and were very interested in LB Jabara Williams.

To believe what some in here try to push is to believe that the texans organization is completely off the richter scale in terms of incompetence.....meaning that while these other teams are out setting up visits & interviews, everyone in the FO for the texans is on vacation & wont be back until the draft having done no prep work, scouting & basic offseason preparations.

Noone's arguing they have underachieved. Noone damn sure is even arguing that Kubiak & Smith shouldn't have been fired after this past year or even a year or two before that. But this whole movement of "they're doing nothing b/c we can't see it being reported like these other teams" is just stupid.

#1, when has the national media, or any media for that matter ever cared enough to cover any houston sports teams adequate & accurately enough....

#2, Someone from inside the organization would've leaked out info about Incompetence on this scale a long time ago if there was any truth to it.

For me, it's not so much that I feel they are doing nothing at all and are just vacationing. For me, it's about seeing us check all our possibilities.

From a fan standpoint of not seeing or hearing about visits it looks as if the front office already has a set list of players of who they want to target because they either fit our system or because they think this player can contribute right away. That's great and all but that method hasn't resulted in the best drafts really. Seems like that method has had us not knowing what to do when certain players are off the board and certain great players are still on the board.

I'm not saying they are on vacation, it's just that when I see and hear about all these other teams visiting a certain player, or working out another guy - I get that feeling that the other teams are crossing every t and dotting every I while ours is still having this "we're sticking to our guns" attitude instead of making sure about another guy.

So really its about perception then...at least for you right? If the Texans' FO moves were more visible, but the team still sucked like they have, would you really feel better about the state of this franchise at this point? I personally wouldn't b/c for the most part teams are all over the place with this kind of stuff. & every team does the bolded & as a scout, you're supposed to rely the most on what you see on the field, i.e. watching tape.

For every successful team that does it 1 way, there's another successful team that does it completely the opposite. Where is the line drawn in the sand that says if you don't do something a certain way, you're destined to be a lose? Sure, you might be able to find a few things, namely coaching tenures, but with stuff like interviews & visits with prospective players, i don't think there is one. Teams vary too much for there to be an actual line for those kinds of things.

I see what you are saying, and no I wouldn't feel better about the franchise if we sucked still but I would be able to say that we made a wrong decision vs. we didn't even think of that guy.

Take for instance the Garret Graham pick (which I liked by the way). When he was picked, alot of fans were pretty ticked. Understandably so because at the time there were a few highly valued safeties available (I remember Rashad Jones from Georgia being one of them). From the fans standpoint we didn't hear about Rashad Jones or any safety being evaluated or visited by The Texans so the perception is "this FO doesn't know what they are doing, all we do is draft TEs and they didn't address any needs" as to where had they did bring in a safety or Rashad Jones especially we would've been able to say "they did have Garret Graham rated higher on their board." or "they must've not liked Rashad Jones."

Now hindsight being 20/20 it does look as if the Texans may've made the right decisions because none of those available safeties are doing too much anyhow and Garret Graham has a better chance of eventually contributing, but when we don't even hear of a safety visiting us or anything - the perception will be that we didn't do our dilligence.

i completely understand where you're coming from & thats the way i've noticed many of the fans have thought about how the texans go about their business..............unlike you however, they're not willing to admit it.

They see that this FA went here so they automatically assume that the texans didn't even look at the guy b/c they heard or saw nothing. But when they rationalize why they think this.."well, look at their track record in FA.." which really in the context of the discussion means next to nothing b/c they've lost out on FA's that they have actively targeted for all the world to see.

I guess the way that i look at it is I don't give a rat's ass how many FA's they target & bring in, how many prospects they have lined up for interviews/workouts & how long the HC is here.............just put a damn winning product on the field.

Either the Texans suck at getting good FA talent or they just aren't as active as some other teams.

Take your pick.

And now back to what this thread was meant to be.

As reported on GBN report, Houston has brought in CB Chris Culliver;; WR Dontavia Bogan.

South Carolina cornerback-safety Chris Culliver is a fast-rising draft prospect who's scheduled to conduct private workouts for the Cleveland Browns, Baltimore Ravens and the Kansas City Chiefs, according to NFL sources with knowledge of the situation. Culliver is also slated to take an official visit with the Minnesota Vikings. The Houston Texans are also expected to meet with Culliver. Originally projected as a fourth-round draft pick, Culliver has also drawn third-round grades from several teams. A 6-foot, 200-pound cornerback who has also played safety, Culliver ran the 40-yard dash in 4.36 seconds at the NFL scouting combine.

He registered a 1.50 10-yard split and a 38 1/2 inch vertical leap, a 10-03 broad jump. He also posted a 4.08 20-yard shuttle and a 6.08 three-cone drill.

Culliver is the Gamecocks' all-time kick return leader with 2,476 yards.

Culliver dealt with a torn pectoral last season, but has recovered from his injury.

He was moved from safety to cornerback prior to last season.

As a junior, Culliver was a second-team All-Southeastern Conference selection when he recorded 52 tackles and returned 26 kickoffs for 585 yards.

As a sophomore, he intercepted three passes with 60 tackles and forced two fumbles.

Culliver signed with South Carolina as a wide receiver before moving to free safety.

While the Lions, does give an indication on how teams try to manipulate information.

Fron the link

The pre-draft chess match extends to the process of player visits and workouts, with teams engaged in various levels of mind games when it comes to whether they are or aren’t interested in the guys they’ve brought to town. Plenty of visits are smokescreens - and plenty aren’t. It’s impossible to know, which makes the parade of reports regarding who is going where largely irrelevant.

Some teams only draft from the pool of players they’ve brought to town or worked out. Other teams draft none of the guys whose tires they’ve kicked. The smart move would be to change it up on a year-in and year-out basis.

Still, homework needs to be done on the players in which a franchise truly is interested. And it could be that teams like the Lions will announce some of the guys they’re bringing to town, pretend that they’re announcing all of them, and try their damnedest to keep a small group of guys in which they’re truly interested quiet

I'm a simple man so simplification is an easy, necessary process for me. This is an example of making it too damn difficult to figure out. Pro Days are pretty universal, bringing a top rated prospect into workout probably raises more concerns or questions about something that needs reviewed. The higher guys on the board they already have graded, therefore have no need to draw attention to their true interests. So the guys they bring in are either off the board by the time the Texans draft (to throw other teams off & just get some extra work in on the guy) or mid to late picks who still need sorting out.

Which pretty much goes back to what i & others have been saying in other threads to other fans..........we, nor any other fans of any other teams really know what its front office is doing, planning to do, or looking at. & whether or not it's based on tendencies from previous years or whatever, it still only amounts to at best an educated guess... nothing more.

Elzy could be a nice addition. After all we aren't asking much of a player who may be a 4th RB with the possibility of Slaton being gone this season. Anyone got more info on him?
