The NFL Players Association is putting into place a plan that would prevent each top college prospect from attending next month's draft in New York, according to multiple league sources. The NFLPA already has contacted 17 top prospects that ordinarily would have received an invitation to attend the draft and informed them not to go.

How would this not be a huge PR blunder by the NFLPA ? Would this do anything but alienate NFL fans ?

Don't know. I don't think any of them know what their doing..

The NFLPA* can't "order" anybody to do anything... They would "like" a show of solidarity by guys who will eventually be part of their new union, but they can't require jack. Trying to strong-arm the potential new recruits could be seen as anti-competitive as well.

*-Now simply a Trade Association

As long as teams can still draft the players, I don't really care if they are present or not. Don't take the draft away from us Texans fans...its like our SuperBowl!

As a fan, I don't give a rat's ass if a prospect goes to the draft. All I care about is who falls to my team and who my team decides to take.

I don't care if some guy is in the green room waiting for his name to get called. I don't care if some guy gets to walk out onto the stage with his friends and family and get to put on the cap and hold up the jersey.

That stuff is for the kids. And it's kinda crappy that they're trying to take it away from them. They're only going to get one chance to do that their entire lives.

If this means that Adam Schefter/Jason La Canfora/etc. can't see who's talking on their cell phones, and therefore can't announce the pick 30 seconds before Goodell announces it from the podium, then I actually hope it happens.

This is so dumb. This is really really dumb.

How they claim to no longer operate as a union and then instruct players or potential players what to do?

Isn't that fueling the fire of the owners saying that they actually haven't stopped being a union?

What a stupid idea by the NFLPA. Asking incoming players to stand united when the NFLPA is actively working to limit their contracts as rookies doesn't seem like it makes much sense.

The NFLPA needs to concern itself with more urgent matters than the draft, like getting a deal done and moving on with football.

"Hey rook - we know this is why you've been going to all those early morning practices since midle school. This will be your once in a lifetime event to stand on the stage with your jersey, pics taken, knowing you've finally made it. Also that all your hard work, blood, sweat, tears, sacrifices has lead you to one of the proposed top picks in the country and is a great time to immortalize that work..... but if you could stay home instead, that'd be grrrreaaaaat."

YES! That is so annoying when they do that.

The NFLPA can't "order" them to do jack. Suggest it to them maybe, but they have no authority over them, yet.

Yeah, but the NFLPA and the players in it have relationships with the agents, who can and will advise the draftees not to attend. An agent isn't going to jeopardize his relationship with his other clients for the sake of 1 or 2 rookies.

The thing that really gets me is that the PA has been spewing comments about how the fans will be the most affected by a lockout and saying all the things they think fans want to hear. Then they try to discourage players from going to the draft? You mean, the only damn thing an NFL fan has to look forward to now this off-season? They want to hold their own little draft pick show? WTF? Are we supposeded to do a split screen on the TV?

They've already screwed up FA, now they're wanting to jack the draft up. Oh, but it's all about the fans.

**** all these hypocrites!

Absolutely agree with this one.

I thought this was kinda wierd too.

On a personal note, I think its kinda chicken $hit. My cousin will be entering the draft next year and while he isn't good enough to be asked to show up in NY, it doesn't mean he doesn't dream about it. The veterans had thier day in the sun, who are they to tell these young men who have toiled for years to reach this point to sit this one out. They diserve thier day in the sun just as much as anyone.

Yep!

I've done that since the NFL Network started (2006?).

What? A split screen?

I'm 100% NFLN ever since they began. ESPN sucks beyond comprehension. The mere sight of either of those buffoons make me want to throw a haymaker their way. My TV's too expensive for that
