1st. Cameron Jordan, Cal, DE 6040 287 35" arms 11 1/8" hands

If not the best, close as can be projected to the best player available for Texans move to a 3-4. I'm also looking for a strong side OLB prospect who can rotate @ DE, see Mario Williams (would like to see some competition between the two to see who can get the most sacks). I think Wade can sell this to fellow coaches & players alike, not to mention adds valuable front line depth. Like his pedigree, bloodlines, character everything & he's ready to go without much transition since he played in a 3-4 at Cal. I did not include Von Miller, Robert Quinn or Prince Amukamara could be off the board.

2nd. Brooks Reed, Arizona, OLB 6030 263 32 1/4" arms 10" hands

You guys want Clay Matthews III you got him. Very impressed with his motor & edge speed. Excellent body control filling weak-side OLB position (along with Barwin coming off rehab). Reed is a maximum-effort player who will leave it all one the field. A true technician who overcomes lack of ideal size and top-end speed to be productive against the run and pass. Displays excellent awareness, maintains gap responsibilities, and can be counted on to play within your defensive system. Has the potential to stand up in a 3-4.

3rd. Deunta Williams, FS North Carolina, 6020 205 33 1/4" arms 10" hands

Did not workout @ the combine because he is recovering from a broken leg, otherwise no way he lasts this long in a weak safety class. Whether Texans move Quin to FS or not it should be a long range proposition to add talent early to Texans secondary. Williams has ideal size and good speed. Smart kid that is always in position and shows a knack for anticipating routes. Fluid athlete that sticks with receivers in and out of their breaks in man coverage. Possesses reliable hands and the body control to make difficult interceptions. Takes precise angles in run support and is a sound tackler

4th. Terrell McClain, DT/NG, South Florida, 6020 297 32 3/4 arms 10 1/8" hands

See him as a fine developmental NG/NT has really good feet in traffic, pairs up well w/Earl Mitchell who I projected Texans would take in 5th rd. last year but took in 3rd. McClain is tall enough with very good bulk. Possesses a quick first step and the lateral agility to stunt and slant effectively. Uses quick active hands to shed and gain penetration. Has the range to make plays outside the tackle box. Tough kid with a relentless motor that fights through double teams.

5th Daniel Ziemba, Auburn, OT, 6060 317 34" arms 9 5/8" hands

With Butler status up in the air I'm still thinking Texans will look to address swing tackle position. Ziemba, fresh off a BCS National Championship with Auburn, has a chance to become a solid starting right tackle at the next level. Has a ton of starts on his resume including many against top competition. He possesses excellent size and good mobility for a big man. Despite all his starting experience, he could still benefit from tightening up his technique as both a pass and run blocker. Flashes the foot speed and quickness the teams covet but still needs to do a better job protecting the quarterback and blocking out in space. Ziemba's a talented, battled-tested prospect. Love his name, this is the highest draft slot (7th) before Texans slide back down to #11 in 6th. If Texans do get supplemental pick I would be tempted to move up into the 4th to get him.

6th. Demarcus Van Dyke, Miami, CB, 6010 176 31 3/8 9" hands

Along with Free Agency CB expect Texans to uncover a fine cover cornerback with excellent size & speed (fastest player @ combine 4.28). Van Dyke is blessed with great speed and good height for a corner. Track athlete who can recover when beat and shows good burst to the football. Does a good job defending the deep ball with his length and straight-line speed. Is a good tackler in the open field. Hard-working and durable. Texans might consider to roll him into special teams player as gunner & returner.

7th. Jeff Maehl, Oregon, WR, 6010 190 31 1/2" arms 9 1/8" hands

Has the frame but undersized weight wise with room to add 15-20 lbs. loved watching him produce in clutch situations for Oregon. Not explosive, quick or fast his ability to create separation was demonstrated @ the combine where he notched top performances across the board- 3 cone (6.42 best of combine) 20 yard shuttle (3.94) & 60 yard shuttle (10.8). He is probably PS fodder to develop but in time could see him replace David Anderson in the slot. Has really nice soft hands, very reliable moving the chains.

1. I like the player but not the pick. We've got much bigger needs than DE depth, he'd sit on the bench behind Mario and Antonio and we just can't afford that luxury right now.

2. Very good pick, I like his size and intensity/motor.

3. Very good pick as well. Williams will take some time to heal, learn, and develop but he'll really pay off in the 2012 season.

4. I'm not familiar with this guy at all so I'll have to just trust you here.

5. I like the pick. We don't know if Butler is going to leave or not but most likely he will and the only backup we've got is Cole Pemberton on the practice squad.

6. Good pick. He's got the size, speed, and some potential. Only time will tell if it's a good pick or not but at this point we need all the depth we can get.

7. I'm not familiar with this guy at all so I'll just have to trust you here.

Overall good mock draft, I'd like to see the secondary get more attention earlier and another LB later as well, we need lots of both.

really, have we seen Antonio or Mario hold up as 3-4 DE's? a lot of question marks. when the strength of this draft is the five technique DE & you have the chance to nail down one of the best prospects you do it. why reach to fill another position, too many question marks @ CB position this early. Which is why the Texans will bring in a top notch free agent veteran CB who can led the talent around him to next level.

I see you took Brooks Reed in 2nd yourself. My feeling is the Texans must attack & try to improve/overall their front 7 first. Pass rush, & relentless skilled players up front in all positions. Going DE/OLB given the talent pool available is the quickest way to impact the 3-4. I like the way these players fit together as well.

I really want a playmaking, ball hawk, with range to cover across the middle in the NFL. Hate to say I'm taking advantage of his situation but that is exactly what it is. There is some risk taking a player coming off severe injury like this, but I'll leave that up to the medical staff to determine. Williams is the type of FS the Texan fans have coveted for years, if he works out then Quin bolsters CB's & fill nickel position, rotate & add much needed quality depth in secondary.

I'm not sure how many times I've posted Terrell McClain notes, but he is my personnel favorite developmental NG. Yes he is of the smaller more compact size but @ 6020 300 he can still be physical, he's just a lot quicker & more explosive. The thing which stands out to me about him are his feet, he has excellent foot speed & balance, can plant, redirect in the box to chase down the QB. Plus has durability, athletic ability to play on Sundays.

I think several other NFL teams will fall in love with Ziemba which is why if he falls later in 4th rd. Texans should target him & move up. Much higher ceiling OT than Cole. Very tough, nasty player that will compete every down. I've also noticed a drop in Eric Winston play throughout last season, think it was because of some nagging injury? but for whatever the reason, more talent & depth is needed if Butler leaves.

I generally like Miami corners. Brandon Harris did not have a good season, little smaller than advertised & does not have this kids quicks which you can't teach your born with. Watching his games I did note his teammate Van Dyke, thought he closed rather quick & displayed great range, yet was never highly touted because of technique issues. My feeling is being compared to Harris actually hurt his stock, but raw ability support a higher draft grade. Combine took care of that, since he broke the 4.3 barrier.

I've watched a ton of tape on Jeff Maehl. Originally I was thinking he could be a Kevin Walter clone, but kid is skinny as a stick. He elevates & will lay his body out there to extend the completion which is a credit to his toughness but in the NFL I'm afraid its going to led to serious injury. But then I noticed he was at the combine & had added some weight (184 Oregon to 190lbs) yes he added nine pounds of muscle & broke the All Time Combine Record in the 3 cone drill 6.42 sec. http://calstrengthacademy.com/tag/jeff-maehl/ this makes me more comfortable in projecting him as NFL WR, displays work ethic, understands what he needs to improve knowing he'll never have classic long speed, think of a poor mans Jordy Nelson. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n9vonRlG9Lk

We seem to agree on most everything except the 1st round. Your right there are questions surrounding Antonio and Mario's performance in the 3-4 but there are even bigger questions surrounding a rookies ability to play in the NFL. Mario is a probowler and athletic freak and Antonio has experience playing in the 3-4 from Arizona. I chose to address CB early only because the talent drop off after the 1st round guys/top 4 is huge. I'm not a fan of Aaron Williams in the 2nd round and the CB hole in the Texans secondary is a huge gaping one. Contrary to you, I like Brandon Harris and would take him in the 1st. The Jaguars are drooling over him at #16. Again I like Jordan and Watt at the DE spot but just think that it's a luxury pick that we can't afford in the 1st round right now if we want to rebuild our defense as quickly as possible. We don't need our 1st round pick sitting on the bench at all, he needs to be on the field. As for CB, I chose a guy who can start for us because there's no guarantee that the Texans address CB in FA with a stud player. Nothing in the history of Texans FA tells me that they'll go after a top tier/grossly expensive player or that the player like Aso or Joseph will even want to play for us when there are contender teams they can play for. We may come out of FA, whenever it is, with no one.

I appreciate we can discuss these issues openly & honestly. Its fun to find someone with some conviction & avid draft interest.

That said this is a beautiful situation to bring in a future front line foundation piece, surrounded by talent with a coach who knows how to develop him. Not addressing DL during Capers years led to that 3-4's demise, counting on Payne & Gary Walker was a mistake. Now you want to pass on Jordan, hey I already lived that nightmare in Portland.

I think both of our draft schemes are better than anything Smithiak will come up with. I think if you, me, and a few other draftniks should be in the Texans war room on draft day and run the show. We sure couldn't do any worse. Rule#1 no more players from that football mecca CSU. Rule#2 no more TE's until there's a real need for one. Rule#3 no more hiring only coaches that are your friends or their kids unless they are the best available. Those 3 rules would solve alot of what's wrong with this team.

Nice!

I like the idea of going DE in the 1st, but I would prefer Watt. I would be satisfied with Jordan though, so this pick is gold.

I like Reed as well, but I worry about his climb after the season. His film was good, but I dont know about early 2nd good. Still, you got a good player at a position of need.

Williams is a tough one to peg. Of course I think he is a great player. However, he weighed in lighter than I had hoped, and is still recovering from injury. I have him in the 4th, but if it takes the 3rd to get him then I would jump on it. Simply the best pure FS in the draft, in my opinion.

Decent value on a position of need in the 4th, good pick.

I dont know much about Ziemba, but I like the position.

I will never doubt your late round U corners again, after you called Shields last year. Pull the trigger.

Love! Maehl. Dude will not be a stud in the NFL, but he will be a productive 3rd for 10-12 years, and good become a fan favorite wherever he lands.

I think I would be satisfied if we come out of this draft with an answer to our safety play. Whether that be picking the best darn safeties in the draft at a reach, or picking a CB to free one of our current CB to play FS. We just HAVE to get better safety play to be a good defense.

Reviewing this mock, as mentioned, Texans could use their supplemental compensation (along with current pick) either to select a player here slotted or use as a bargaining chip to move up in a specific round, the latter being more probable because of laundry list of needs. So this is just a tweek but so you get the more probable picture -

1st. Cameron Jordan, Cal, DE 6040 287 35" arms 11 1/8" hand

2nd. Brooks Reed, Arizona, OLB 6030 263 32 1/4" arms 10" hands

3rd. Deunta Williams, FS North Carolina, 6020 205 33 1/4" arms 10" hands

4th. Daniel Ziemba, Auburn, OT, 6060 317 34" arms 9 5/8" hands

target move up range to acquire legit starting OT quality replacing Butler. Rick Smith is gaining experience lets hope its not too late for his group to retool personnel moving forward?

4th. Terrell McClain, DT/NG, South Florida, 6020 297 32 3/4 arms 10 1/8" hands

6th. Demarcus Van Dyke, Miami, CB, 6010 176 31 3/8 9" hands

Pretty sure you can't trade compensatory picks.
I feel scrooged by ghosts of Christmas past. back to hope of a 3rd rd. comp. or if Butler signs elsewhere? Lucky is going to be all over this :rake:

Just something of note from John McClain on his Tuesday Chat discussing Butler & what Texans may end of getting in the event he does not sign his tender.

John McClain: They tendered him. If he signs it., he'll be back. When FA returns to four years, he'll be unrestricted. If they can't re-sign him, they'll have to find a third OT they can count on.
so if that happens? then the Ziem man could be his replacement.

Got Brooks post combine, didn't think he would last but some teams ahead of the Texans made some questionable picks :)
