Pat Williams leaving Vikings

Section516

Warrior
The Williams Wall era in Minnesota has come to an end. Pat Williams, 38-year-old unrestricted free agent defensive tackle, has announced that he's leaving the Minnesota Vikings.

Williams made his announcement via text message to Tim Yotter of Viking Update. "Everything's good," he said. "I am not coming back. Going to go finish elsewhere."

The news is no surprise to Vikings coach Leslie Frazier, who said at the Combine that "We are going to try to upgrade our defensive line," that "someday Pat is going to retire," and "we need a young guy to step up."

Williams told Yotter he didn't trust everyone in Minnesota, but emphasized he had no problems with Frazier. "I trust Frazier," he said. "He can only do so much. It's that other part of the job. I'd played for him any day.

Dont want Williams

After watching teams consistently going for and converting 3rd/4th and 1's. Are you saying the Texans dont need a space eating DT ? Especially when they are switching to a 3-4.

Steelers -Hampton 330 lbs +
Packers - Raji 330 lbs +
Jets - Jenkins 330 lbs + Another big Samoan Dude also 330 lbs +
Pats - Wilfork 330 lbs +

Are you starting to notice a trend?

Call me crazy but I would look into this. I was against bringing in Shaun Rogers because the guy had only started 12 games in the last two seasons combined.

Williams has missed three games....in the last 9 years. Think about that for a minute.

Call him up, see what he is looking for. A low risk one year deal would be fine with me. We have so many needs it would be nice to have a stop gap at NT for a year while we fill up in other areas.

If we don't get him, fine. Not a big deal. But I'm not against this one.

He should retire IMO because he is old and doesn't have the same ability that he used to. Now, he could play as a back-up or in a situational role but I don't see him starting for a team.

I would not be surprised to see him go to Pitt, GB or NE as a rotational player.

Right! He is going to be wanting a ring, so he will go where he has the best opportunity.

Is this where I insert the factoid that Wade Phillips was the Bills DC when Pat Williams was signed as an UDFA by Buffalo in 1997?

No, the statement was mainly directed at the knee jerkers who think we need to be signing any & every released/cut player just b/c they had some good moments in the past. Then when the guy signs with another team, they kill the texans FO for not signing the guy.

Agreed

If the Texans were to enter the FA market the 5 guys I would look at signing and they're McNair type signings.

Chris Hoke- Backed up Hampton in Pittsburgh. Would be a major upgrade. Still young.

Gabe Watson- Big young guy with talent, if he puts it all together he could be a force to be reckoned with.

Mathias Kiwanuka- Would immediately upgrade the pass rush. Has played OLB.

Ike Taylor- Has played CB in 3-4 defense. Would be the best CB on the team. He will not come cheap. So he's not BOB's kinda guy. But he would help the team tremendously.

Donte Whitner- He's still fairly young and while Whitners' is somewhat injury prone, he is a leader on the backend that the Texans are sorely missing. He would be the best S in Texans history. This makes mesad.

All of these guys are fairly and would fit Garys' we want up and coming players theme.

Yes to the bolded..the others i'm not so sure of. Kiwanuka has been a huge disappointment in NY & i seriously doubt pitt gives us the opportunity to get at Ike Taylor..especially after how their secondary looked when he got hurt in the SB & steeler fans were :vincepalm: watching William Gay....

Lance Zierlien predicted shortly after the Phillips hire that we would get Williams on a 1-year contract (mentioned they had a good relationship). I think it would be a nice stop-gap, hopefully they can get it done. Even at his age he would probably be the best DT we have had since Payne.

Sometimes I wonder what Seth Payne would've been like with a guy like Mario on the same DL and under a 4-3 Defense.

Has he even served that suspension of his yet? Now that he is no longer in Minnesota, I am sure the Minnesota courts will pull back any appeals and force him to serve that suspension.

Do we want someone who is gonna miss 4 games?

I believe that Minnesota had recently ruled that the NFL could punish them
