rmartin65's Post- Combine Mock

rmartin65

Phil Kessel: Nice Guy. Tries Hard.
Well, the combine is over, and it came without any incredible risers or fallers. In this mock, like my others, I assume that nothing happens in FA, and no trades occur. While I wish that both actually do happen, they are much to difficult to predict. This will be my last mock until the day before the draft, as I will be focusing on updating my full rankings and updating my small school rankings (which I hope to post in mid April). Let the critique begin!

1) Wisconsin DE JJ Watt, 6’5” 290 lbs
The combine just solidified it- Watt is my pick at 11. Big, hardworking, and more athletic than I ever anticipated, the sky is the limit for this guy. 34 reps. A 4.8 40. A 37” vertical and a 10’ broad jump. This guy is explosive! His agility is also incredible, as evidenced by his 6.88 cone. Add this on top to his unbelievable season, and I am surprised he is not garnering top 5 consideration. Having a 3-4 DE rotation of Mario, Watt and Smith would be simply terrifying for opposing offenses.

2) Illinois LB Martez Wilson, 6’4”, 250 lbs
I did not specify inside or outside with Wilson, because he can do it both. This versatility is necessary for the Texans’ 3-4 D. Wilson an athletic specimen, arguably the most athletic LB in the draft. He can cover TEs and backs, as well as rush the passer. With Wilson, Cushing, Ryans and Barwin, the Texans’ OLB core looks very solid.

3) North Carolina WR Greg Little, 6’2” 231 lbs

Here I decide to go a different route than most. I am looking for a NT (as I was last round), but could not find good value. I looked to FS, but ran into the same problem. While looking through my rankings, one player stood out to me that met my team needs and my rankings almost perfectly- Greg Little. A receiver that runs with the ball like a runningback, but described as “sticky handed”. He drops for missing the season, as well as not being the best runner. However, put him with AJ and DD, and the Texans have a big, nasty set of receivers.

4) North Carolina FS Deunta Williams, 6’2” 205 lbs

A guy I just cant get away from, Williams drops because he weighed in 10 lbs lighter than I wanted. 6’2” 205 makes him pretty lanky (for a FS), so I would like to see him bulk up a bit. If he can bulk up, he becomes the Texans’ FS for the future.

5) Alabama QB Greg McElroy, 6’2” 220 lbs
I hate Dan O. I hate being one bad/freak hit to Schaub away from seeing that knucklehead in charge of the offense. McElroy, while not exactly starter material, is a smart player with an NFL arm, who I can see becoming a backup/spot starter for 12 years in the league. He would be perfect to sit behind Schaub, and even help mentor the eventual QB of the future (whenever he is on the roster).

6) Central Florida OT Jah Reid, 6’7” 327 lbs
Physical freak that stood out in the post season. Worth a chance late to see if he pans out.

7) Colorado State NT Guy Miller, 6’3” 302 lbs
No, I am not kidding. I did not wish to leave NT to this late, but I could not find good value, and I refuse to reach for a need. Miller will not be a WOW type NT, but he will do his job, clog the lanes, and create the occasional pressure from the inside.

Good draft, but you gotta give my man Tyrod some love at the later rounds. Guarantee he is the biggest sleeper QB out of this draft (heard it here first) and will at least be better than Mcleroy.

Thanks for the response. I am not a Taylor fan, however. I am not a fan of scrambling QBs in general. While they are exciting, and win games, they dont win championships. That said, Taylor seems to be evolving into more a passer, so I would not be too upset if the Texans draft him. I just prefer McElroy a little better.

I had Wilson rated at the end of the first round before the combine. I expect now he will go about that area. Not saying it couldn't happen, but I would be very very surprised to see him still hanging around.

I love your draft if it turned out this way though.

Watt is going to be a hell of a 5 tech.

Wilson is my favorite ILB prospect in this draft. He could play outside in a 34 but I like him inside better.

Little has been on my watch list for over a year and I like what I see.

I'm on record saying that I think Williams will turn out to be the best FS in this draft class.

McElroy isn't a terrible developmental pick.

I've been way high on Jah Reid ever since beerlover turned me on to him.

Not too familiar with Miller but he has a pulse, which means he will probably see the field at NT.

I've had bronchitis all week and have watched a bunch of the combine repeats . The thing that Mayock stressed is you can't miss early on a player . Remember when the Pats took Mayo , not sexy but they hit . I think Watts , Ingram , Jones , and Miller are the best bets to be good pros .

Thanks for the response. Is there anything you would change?

I am leaving where to put Wilson to the coaching staff. He could be both, so I am not worried.

Yep, I agree with both Mayock, and yourself. Except on Miller. Not sold on Miller, although everything points to him being awesome.

I respectfully disagree. We cant have only 2 decent DEs, especially with the wear and tear that they take in the 3-4. Having 3 players between above average and great will make the Dline nasty.

I think you take stats and how they played in college plus physical talent = success . The Texans are looking for an OLB . They find a guy who ran a 4.6 at 260 but had 1 sack in college . That's like a 7'0 center getting two rebounds a game .

You can say the same thing about others positions too, take WR & Julio Jones for example. However doubtfull Texans would select either? So rmartin just went with gut & personel favorite. I'm actually leaning toward Nate Solder as BPA but the same problem exists for him.

In the end, if the Texans can't trade down, they'll probably take Prince.

I can see where you are coming from, but as a backup I'd much prefer a mobile QB over a pocket passer. If you top QB goes down, the backup will be less effective, but it always helps to have that xfactor (which is his legs). Those can pick up first downs and keep drives alive that will help win games until the starter comes back.

Also, Tyrod is a decent passer (better than Vick coming out) and has an uncanny ability to keep looking down field. He definitely does not get the credit he deserves when it comes to his arm due to the lack of coverage the ACC gets. The offense he played is awful too. Probably one of the worst schemed offenses for any big time program. This last year (and the year before that) it consisted of "everyone go deep and tyrod you scramble around until you can make an amazing play to save our asses!" hence why we got destroyed by Stanford at the bowl game.

When can D. Williams play?

When the injury first occurred I think I read that he could be back in time to work out before the draft. If not, definitely before camps I would imagine. The break was supposedly clean, and did not take out muscles or ligaments.

We may be in complete agreement here and just differ on terminology. I am not a fan of running QB's but am a fan of scrambling QB's and they have been successful. Roger Staubach, Steve Young, John Elway all first wanted to pass and that is the key point and distinction to a running QB but they certainly were good scramblers.

Guys like Kelly , Namath , Elway , Marino , and Brady will all need to have artificial knees from hanging in there until the last moment to throw . They didn't have the one yard slant in the playbook . That being said a guy who can get 6 yards on a 3rd in five without being touched is handy .

I would include Aaron Rodgers too. His concern however is not his knees but number of concussions his body can withstand.

Yep ... that guys liable to retire at 30 because of head injuries . Favre will laugh ans say " see , they xrayed my head and found nothin " .

I really like the N. Carolina players. I think we would have an entirely different draft board if there had been no infractions. D. Williams has always inrigued me and I think you have him about right. I had him in 2nd round prior to injury. In your Dline scenario is Smith your DT? Not sure he will like that much although he can definitely play either. Also I am okay with your Nose in 7th. If the guy can plug the middle and occasionally take up two opponents, he will earn his check.

Yea, we agree. Running QB vs scrambling is an important distinction, my bad.

Mario and Smith cant play the entire game. This defense is very taxing to the front 3. Having a solid rotation on the defensive line was one of the biggest reasons the Giants won a Super Bowl.

Its certainly not our biggest need but it is a need for sure. If it were up to me I would use this whole draft to make the front 7 as deep and talented as possible.

It's true that Smith & Mario can't play the entire game, however it seems to me that both Okoye & Mitchell's best position in the 3-4 would be DE. Do you not think they would be good enough to be rotational players in Wade's defense, do you see them as NT's in the 3-4, or do you think they will be cut?
