Well, the combine is over, and it came without any incredible risers or fallers. In this mock, like my others, I assume that nothing happens in FA, and no trades occur. While I wish that both actually do happen, they are much to difficult to predict. This will be my last mock until the day before the draft, as I will be focusing on updating my full rankings and updating my small school rankings (which I hope to post in mid April). Let the critique begin!
1) Wisconsin DE JJ Watt, 65 290 lbs
The combine just solidified it- Watt is my pick at 11. Big, hardworking, and more athletic than I ever anticipated, the sky is the limit for this guy. 34 reps. A 4.8 40. A 37 vertical and a 10 broad jump. This guy is explosive! His agility is also incredible, as evidenced by his 6.88 cone. Add this on top to his unbelievable season, and I am surprised he is not garnering top 5 consideration. Having a 3-4 DE rotation of Mario, Watt and Smith would be simply terrifying for opposing offenses.
2) Illinois LB Martez Wilson, 64, 250 lbs
I did not specify inside or outside with Wilson, because he can do it both. This versatility is necessary for the Texans 3-4 D. Wilson an athletic specimen, arguably the most athletic LB in the draft. He can cover TEs and backs, as well as rush the passer. With Wilson, Cushing, Ryans and Barwin, the Texans OLB core looks very solid.
3) North Carolina WR Greg Little, 62 231 lbs
Here I decide to go a different route than most. I am looking for a NT (as I was last round), but could not find good value. I looked to FS, but ran into the same problem. While looking through my rankings, one player stood out to me that met my team needs and my rankings almost perfectly- Greg Little. A receiver that runs with the ball like a runningback, but described as sticky handed. He drops for missing the season, as well as not being the best runner. However, put him with AJ and DD, and the Texans have a big, nasty set of receivers.
4) North Carolina FS Deunta Williams, 62 205 lbs
A guy I just cant get away from, Williams drops because he weighed in 10 lbs lighter than I wanted. 62 205 makes him pretty lanky (for a FS), so I would like to see him bulk up a bit. If he can bulk up, he becomes the Texans FS for the future.
5) Alabama QB Greg McElroy, 62 220 lbs
I hate Dan O. I hate being one bad/freak hit to Schaub away from seeing that knucklehead in charge of the offense. McElroy, while not exactly starter material, is a smart player with an NFL arm, who I can see becoming a backup/spot starter for 12 years in the league. He would be perfect to sit behind Schaub, and even help mentor the eventual QB of the future (whenever he is on the roster).
6) Central Florida OT Jah Reid, 67 327 lbs
Physical freak that stood out in the post season. Worth a chance late to see if he pans out.
7) Colorado State NT Guy Miller, 63 302 lbs
No, I am not kidding. I did not wish to leave NT to this late, but I could not find good value, and I refuse to reach for a need. Miller will not be a WOW type NT, but he will do his job, clog the lanes, and create the occasional pressure from the inside.
