AJ Hawk released by GB

Pretty sure he'll be going back to GB. He was going to be due a $10.5 escalator and the Pack wanted it off the books. They can re-sign him to a more friendly deal if they wish

Ordinary or not, he'd make a good addition to our linebacking crew. Put him and Demico on the inside with Cush and Baldwin on the exterior, we'd have one of the best LB units in the league.

Of course, we don't look at FA that could help our team.

I agree, with AJ Hawk inside, we could put Cushing outside.

& we'd have the two best LBs from the 2006 draft..... sorta.

But another class of 2006 player in Houston... hmmmm.....
 
This is why Hawk was released. I would think that the Pack will rewrite his contract for a more reasonable sum, and Hawk will resign.

A.J. Hawk: The injury to Barnett gave Hawk, who was either splitting time or not playing at all in nickel, the chance to play 100% of the downs. He did that for the final 16 weeks, contributing as much as he has in five seasons. As the junior partner to the talkative Barnett for four-plus seasons, Hawk's personality was submerged to an extent. With Barnett out, the calls came through Hawk. According to teammates, he communicated promptly and succinctly. He still isn't a heavy hitter, rates as a mediocre blitzer (one "pressure" every 19.6 snaps, worst on the defense), often gets stuck on blocks and is a step slow to the sideline. He's steady in coverage, having not given up a TD pass since Week 5 of 2008. Now Hawk's future is uncertain. The Packers won't pay him the $10 million base salary due him in 2011, but if he's on the roster by the first day of the league year (March 4, if labor accord is reached) that amount is guaranteed. He cannot play OLB in a 3-4. Grade: B-minus.

you may be right but he did get his ring and gb kinda treated him bad during the seasun I think he even asked for a trade at one point so he may not go back to gb and he is a ilb in the 34 but he would be a plus in houston
 
Hawk will be a Packer again.

The Green Bay Packers have released linebacker A.J. Hawk after the former first-round pick was scheduled to earn $10 million in 2011.

"With A.J., the business side of the game is driving this decision," general manager Ted Thompson said in a statement. "We're hopeful that we can continue to work with A.J. to have him be a part of our team in the future."

Hawk, drafted fifth overall in 2006, had 111 tackles in 2010 after finishing with less than 90 tackles in each of the previous two seasons. Hawk also had three interceptions this season and has played in all 80 regular-season games since 2006 with 77 starts.

What they have left off is the stats related to what the Pack is most disappointed in with Hawk.............his blitzing inability and his accompanying poor sack numbers (1/2 in 2010).

He plays ILB he really isnt going to have high sack totals but he is good in coverage 3ints last yr his coverage skills could be a positive

Like Cushing, Hawk should be playing as an OLB in a 4-3 so he could land
someplace in the AFC South besides Houston.

Hawk's agent, Mike McCartney, said in an e-mail to The Associated Press on Thursday morning that the two sides are "putting the finishing touches" on a deal that will bring Hawk back to Green Bay one day after the team released him

Not surprised at all. They wanted him and he wanted to stick around. Why wouldn't you if you were Hawk? GB has a good young team that will compete for years.

That's a bunch of BS. They sign the man to a contract and then cut him when they don't feel like paying him.

But God forbid the athlete holds out for more money b/c they should play for the contract they are given.
 
Maybe the Texans could swing a deal to get Nick Barnett after the new CBA is signed...


Packers will shop Barnett after re-signing fellow LB Hawk

The Packers' re-signing of inside linebacker A.J. Hawk makes Nick Barnett's future in Green Bay look tenuous at best.

A source with knowledge of the situation said Thursday that the Packers will explore trading Barnett, who broke his wrist during a Week 4 game against the Detroit Lions, opening the door for Desmond Bishop to line up next to Hawk and emerge as a core player.

Trading Barnett won't happen until a collective bargaining agreement is reached between the NFL and NFL Players Association, but the eight-year veteran could have value because there aren't that many quality inside or middle linebackers available in free agency.

If Barnett can't be traded, the Packers would explore releasing him, the source said. Green Bay selected Barnett in the first round (29th overall) of the 2003 NFL Draft.

Barnett, who's owed $5.5 million next season, has made 100-plus tackles in six of his eight NFL seasons.

This is true but my point was if the team doesn't want to pay a player that money they shouldn't give them a contract for that money. I think it's a bunch of crap that teams continue to screw over their players like that.

Just like Foster getting tendered to play for less than $500K for one year. Really? The league leading rusher just got a $400K contract? But don't let him sit out or hold out cus he would get crucified in the media.

I understand your point, but a lot of times it is something ridiculous that both player & team know is ridiculous when it is made. The only part of a contract that means anything is the guaranteed portion, the rest is fluff for salary cap and PR/
