With the combine beginning tomorrow, I think that having a thread in which we discuss weigh-ins, drills, interviews, pretty much anything to do with the combine, is a pretty good idea. This way we are not looking through all kinds of threads to see who did what, and who interviewed whom (correct usage or no? not an English major).

Buzz about USC OT Tyron Smith's weigh-in (from draftcountdown.com)

USC OT Tyron Smith was only listed at 280 pounds by the Trojans this past season. However, for two months I have been telling people not to worry and that with a solid pre-draft training program Smith would be up over 300 pounds by the Scouting Combine. Sure enough, Smith checked in at a cut 307 pounds in Indy. Even more impressive were Smith's extremely long 36⅜-inch arms and massive 11-inch hands. Needless to say Smith passed the eyeball test! Smith took a big step towards his goal of being the first blocker selected in the 2011 NFL Draft today and if he performs as well as expected in drills the Top 10 overall could be within reach.

This is off subject some, but not entirely because it involves crack football evaluator and rock-star of the NFL Network, Mike Mayock.
In rating and grouping CBs together the other day on NFL Network in preparation for the upcoming Combine in a discussion of defensive backs, Mayock used the term "tranches" ? Hadn't heard that one outside of the context of a discussion involving subprime mortgages and Credit Default Swaps ? Mayock do like to throw his words around.

See now, I personally find this both hilarious as well as utilitarian. Because ya know, the Texans do seem to have taken a somewhat larger than proportionate share of TE's in the past draft or two, and your original and insightful comment which highlights this fact has made he aware of this for the first time. Kudo's to you for coming up with this fresh angle on the way the Texans front office has approached this aspect of managing a NFL franchise.

I Thank you. Your post shows great insight and originality, and I have benefitted from both the entertainment value and knowledge it has provided.

Its funny but an even more scary thought because of the fact that Owen Daniels did not get franchised before the deadline making the possibility of his tenure with the Texans over more realistic. Despite Dressen playing extremely well last year IMO, he's not a lock to be the opening day starter and with the Texans not afraid of drafting TE's with Daniels on the roster who knows how many resources they'll spend bringing more in if the plan is to let him walk.

TE Kyle Rudolph, Notre Dame 2nd round pick here we come :gun:

I'm fine with Daniels moving on to somewhere else, I thought we should have let him go before last year. Dreesen looked good 2 yrs. ago in relief work and did very good this past season as well. I'd move forward with Dreesen, Casey, and Graham at TE. Daniels is to expensive and injured to keep around.

Owen is top shelf in my book. Dreesen fits journeyman type label to me. Casey is a special teams leader who fills multiple back-up roles. Graham was a luxury pick Texans cannot afford to make but did anyway in response to possibility of losing Owen to injury or free agency.
 
Solder is showing why he should be among the top tackles in this draft (if not the number one tackle.)

Excellent 40 time (I heard anywhere from 4.97 to 5.05) and 10 yard split at 1.61
(The 10-yard time is especially important for offensive and defensive linesmen because they usually don't run further than that during a play.)

Solder's 10-yd time compares well with last year DBs at the combine (That's pretty sick!)

"Nate just ran his first 40 yard dash. Unoffially, Solder ran a 4.97 and more important, his 10 yard split was 1.61 seconds, the best of any lineman so far. His 4.97 forty ranks second.

Also, a sign of explosiveness, Nate Solder broad jumped 9'2", almost a foot over last year's average for offensive tackles. He out-jumped the other top linemen in this year's NFL draft.

UPDATE - Solder ran a 4.99 in his second forty."

Also, he did well in the mirror drill, showing that he can bend his knees with ease.

LOL, that's why they have two cameras.
I like to listen to different things they talk about (how to eveluate different positions and stuff) and then watch certain drills to see if the guys I want to see can do well in those drills (guys that I don't see enough games of.)
 
Texans will draft another TE! :vincepalm:

Virgil Green (Nevada) is somewhat undersized at 6'3, 249 but posseses long arms (33-1/2).
He put up some incredible numbers:
10'10 broad jump, 42.5 vertical, 25 reps.

He's projected to run somewhere around 4.4 in the 40

Made a couple of nice catches in one of the drilsl (text-book arm-extending, high-point on the outside shoulder, impossible-to-defend kind of catch.)
 
I know a few weeks ago there was a lot of speculation that none of the offensive linemen were worth a top 10 pick, but I think after the combine a couple will emerge showing that they are worth it. That's good for us Texan fans because the Cowboys will likely need to spend their 1st on a left tackle. I'm guessing Nate Soldier will be their pick.

I agree with you and Lucky (and others).
I think we will have our fair choice at 11 and even trading back!
 
The defensive linemen and linebackers weighed in today, with a few surprises. Von Miller came in at 246 lbs (up 9 lbs from the Senior Bowl). Dontay Moch weighed 248 (up 19 lbs). And Justin Houston tipped the scales at a whopping 270 pounds. I'm interested to see if any of these guys run at these weights. I don't think this is anywhere close to what these guys played at last year.

Potential NTs Kendrick Ellis (346), Jerrell Powe (335), and Phil Taylor (334) were the largest of their group. I'd love to see the Texans get one of these guys to clog the middle of the new 3-4. I just don't see it happening with all of the rhetoric regarding Earl Mitchell and Shaun Cody being fit for the NT spot. A mid round favorite of mine, Notre Dame's Ian Williams, tipped the scales at 319 lbs.
 
I'm really weary of combine weights, people work really hard to get to the 'ideal' weight to improve their draft stock but there is no indication whether they can maintain that sort of weight week in and week out through a season.

I'd much quicker look at what they weighed during their college career.

That's surprising because I'm thinking these guys usually go slim & trim for the Combine, which is about quicks/athletic performance except for the 225 BP reps where the added lbs would be helpful. So for example Miller gaining about 10 pounds doesn't seem wise to me ?
BTW I think we better just forget about Miller, unless the Texans are ready to part with another high pick to move up ? I don't like that idea because I don't think reaching for a single prospect to hold on to Kubiaks job should be the top priority for this Draft, it should be getting as many good football players as we can with our full array of picks.

the one knock on Von was his lack of weight, so he adjusts with a heavy protein diet along with mad strength conditioning program & he gets killed for it, guess the guy can't win?

For whatever the reason I don't like reaching for any prospect to address need. Rick Smith says they don't do this & keep true to their board, well then their board is the problem.
 
The college game has drifted so far away from the pro game, it's difficult to project a QB prospect into the NFL. If a NFL team believes that a QB is made, and not born, then there are some outstanding ingredients in this draft. Newton, Gabbert, Locker, Kaepernick, and Ponder are excellent athletes at the QB position.

Julio Jones has scouts questioning just who is the #1 WR with his off the charts combine.

Yea, his broad jump shows great explosion. He topped out at 11' 3" in that. He was close to 12' but couldn't stick the landing.

I'm telling you, if he falls to 11 and there aren't any elite defensive prospects left it will be difficult to ignore him.
 
Moyock and his sidekicks are sure high on Jacquizz Rodgers, the RB from the Houston area who ended up at Oregon State, a lot of pub. They clearly like him very much. The obvious comparison has got to be that little big-man
with the Jags, Maurice Jones-Drew.

The DBs have been measured and there's a lot of size among the CBs this year. Some have safety size. Not sure if that's important to Wade or not.

The big question about Ponder is durability. If a team feels good about his health, he will go in the 2nd round.

Maybe someone can explain to me what AJ Green accomplished in the SEC that Julio Jones did not. Production wise, they seem pretty comparable. Athletically, Jones looks like he's on another level.
 
If we stay at 11 I want Jones if all the top defensive prospects are gone.

None of the OLB's really excite me outside of Von Miller.


There will be some good talent in the mid rounds. Hopefully the Texans can get some guys that can come in and make an immediate impact..
 
I have a hunch the Texans are gonna have to make a tough call when it comes to Aldon Smith, because with Miller almost surely off the Board at 11, Smith will probably be the best pure edge rusher left on the Board, and they really need an edge rusher. I'm looking toward to seeing him tomorrow.

Impressiveness notwithstanding, raw rep numbers don't always reflect the best players. But damn if that doesn't show that he has some motor and endurance, which is something the Texans DL has sorely lacked. Hopefully they put a star by his name and take a long look.
 
Not surprised by Paea. He has been called the strongest player in NCAA for a while now. I would grab him in the second in a heartbeat. The 11th spot is just too high for him. Unfortunately, he probably wont last to our 2nd.

Yea, I would be good with that. Anywhere in the 20s would be decent value for him. He has NT strength, but can also penetrate pretty well. If it weren't for the knee I would say he should be in consideration at 11. I like him a heck of a lot better than Taylor, thats for sure.
 
He was projected as a first round prospect last year, the only reason he dropped back to the second was cuz of his injury. I bet he goes early in the second if not late in the first (could go in early 20's)

The difference between Miller & Moch is that the Aggie is a terrific football player and they're still trying to figure out if Mock is ?
In the meattime, Justin Houston looked pretty good himself. He's got 2 40s in the low 4.6s and he weighed in at 270. That's not bad at all, and he played the 3-4 OLB position last fall.
