It's all on Capers and Casserly.

Nighthawk

Rookie
I said it last year. I said it two years ago. I'm saying it again. This team is never going anywhere with these two running the show. Capers is a mouth breather who may be a decent administrator but has long since lost it as a coach. He shows me nothing, or make that NOTHING.

Casserly may be brilliant sometimes, but just as often he's dead as a doornail.

If McNair has two brain cells to rub together he's RIGHT THIS MINUTE calling Jimmy Johnson and bumping the money. Otherwise it's a long desperate season for this crowd. They'll win a few eventually, but there wasn't anything there on the field today that said 6-10 much less 8-8 or better.

This coaching staff has no imagination, no vision of the game, no sense of what it might take to win, no fight, no will, no hope.

Here it is: FIRE THEM NOW. Don't wait until the end of the season. Get somebody and start rebuilding this season so that next season we might be competitive.

And Vinny, or whatever your name is, do me a favor and don't delete this post.

if you aren't cussing (skirting the censor), calling people names, spamming, trying to start problems/provoking a fight, or calling out - trolling the mods, our staff won't/shouldn't delete anything. We do merge redundant threads though. This seems redundant but I don't have a problem with it today.

I dont think capers is the one to blame, the blame should go on palmer, he calls the plays, he's the one that designs up the game plan for the offense, oh by the way where was the short drops? we heard it all off season how this offense was going to have a new sheme, i've been watching the same plays since the expansion year! Actually i take that back they did run a reverse which caught me off guard, but besides that there not aggressive on offense, there offensive line is horrible and the offense and the receiving group were blowing assignments all day, palmer should be fired he's horrible, i like capers he's a guy that knows the game of football, and he's done alot of things that have helped this team.........

:ok: I have to respectfully disagree with you. Regardless of who actually calls the plays down...,the head coach is ultimatly responsible for what this team does and performs like. If Dom did not like the way things were going with the play calling he could overule Palmer. Yet he just lets this HORROR continue....on and on and on.

Ya see thats the problem, capers and palmer aren't on the same page, capers wants a ball controll offense with play action mixed in, while palmer wants to open it up and shoot for the moon, this whole off season we heard about the 3 or 4 step drop, and carr said it himself they only ran those designed plays 3 or 4 times in the whole game, so what was all the practice for in the first place? pendry and capers for some reason have one offensive philosophy while palmer is out there by him self having another offensive philosophy, i agree capers should intervene he should be the one that steps up and says "hey something isnt right we need to call different plays...." they ran the same exact plays from like last year, the same exact runs, i agree capers should take some fire, but the bullets should go through palmer first the guy needs to go! i'm tired of looking at him on tv also he's funnny looking, thats all i have....

That is the problem. Capers never says anything besides, lack of execution, too many mistakes etc. He needs to step up and take responsiblity for his team and make adjustments. If he can't do that, then bye bye. We will see next week what this team is really made of.

yaa i agree, but i like capers lol my personal feelings are getting in the way, he's a good football guy he works hard at what he does i give him credit, but sometimes good people finish last..... is it too late to call charlie weis and get him over here, its a emergency!

Personally, I prefer to work smart and not hard. I am awaiting an email from a friend who works for the Carolina Panthers and has since the beginning of their franchise to see exactly how Capers departure went down when he was there. I am really curious to hear his thoughts and views. He knows that team better than anyone I can think of and totally respect his view. I just never felt that he would be the guy to take us to the promise land......ever!

i can tell you why he got fired, there front office made a trade for a defensive lineman that was sitting out i cant remember the name anyways they ended up trading 2 first round picks and i think a second, so for a couple of years they didn't have any picks and the way that they structured the team it was a win now mentallity, so the cap started to bite them..... if that answers your question, i dont know how much capers had to say with that trade or if it was jus a front office move, but if i remember correctly thats what happened

why do you blame capers? the texans have the worst talent in the entire NFL. maybe cleveland- even there i'm not sure. they have almost no decent players.

I saw a coach on the sidelines that told his players (by not going for it on 4th down) that it is ok to loose. I say it is not. We should not go down without a fight. That was pathetic and I dont think I will get over it.

Anyone can sit there with there mouth wide open and not make a difficult descision. The coaching staff should have a well thought out plan of what to do when we are behind by 15 points with 6 minutes remaining. It was not like we needed to make 20 yards it was 4th and inches. If the coaches don't have enough confidence in their players to make that call then they should not be coaching end of story.

I can only speak for myself but I say bring in Jimmy Johnson!!!!

When so much is wrong with a team it has got to go directly to the top. This team was not even close to being prepared for the game. Capers gave his canned answer about the turnovers costing this game. I agree that you can't win with 5 turnovers but there was much more wrong with this game than the turnovers. This is going to be a long season if they don't make some serious changes.

Look at time of possession in the 1st half and the 1st qtr and you will see our offense really didn't get a chance to get in rythm. They call run on 1st and what do you do. The real problem was the bend don't break defense never put any real pressure on Losman so they were able to do whatever they wanted and our offense never got a chance to get started. Say what you want, but the defense was as bad or worse than the offense even though most would say they didn't allow scores. However, they did not give our offense really any opportunities. That mixed with Palmer's play calling is a deadly combination.

The other major problem I have eluded to at the start of this season is that they were going to depend on special team play for points. Mathis is out and the special team play gave them nothing all day. Some might say we need JJ back. Mathis, despite being a rookie, is a big element that was missing from the game. None of the returners made any kind of splash against the Bills.

I've said for years Casserly and Capers are not on the same page, because Caspers has a very tunnel vision view of football and Casserly gets players who do not fit into Caper's mold. When that happens the players waste away. Seems somebody by the name of Possy was tackling Carr all day. I think he use to play for the Texans. Things like that will and do happen, but quite frankly the trade for Buchannon for Glenn is probably going to come back and haunt them in the short run. The cut down to the 53 man roster I believe was a personnel fiasco and we will regret many of the moves we made.

While I too have mentioned Jimmy Johnson I wonder if Tedford could be lured away from Cal at the end of the season. He says he's not interested in the pro level, but he is a very talented young coach. I think you would find his game very entertaining and he is a winner. Remember, in his 1st year at Cal he beat USC when Cal supposidly had nothing. He was a very good QB and he is a teacher's teacher of QB's. Don't under estimate his talents. He played the position he teaches very well. He knows how to throw down field. Remember he has taught Carr, Volick, Dilfer, Harrington, Bollinger, and the young QB at Green Bay. Almost everyone he grooms winds up in the NFL. Say what you want, but he is special and he is a gentleman.

No fire in the players' attitudes. This is purely on the shoulders of the head coach, IMO.
As I mentioned in another thread........the Pats have a coach that's similar in his attitude. The Patriots have a calm, collected, not-too-fired up kind of coach, as do the Texans, and the Pats have been the most dominant team in the past 4 seasons, winning 3 of the past for Super Bowls.

Unfortunately, the Texan meltdown Sunday has revealed the unvarnished truth about where our team is realtive to the rest of the league...and not only are we not a "playoff contender"...we are a sub .500 team and one that is in danger of having a very high draft pick come next year if we don't get some serious leadership improvement soon.

Do I think that will happen...no, we will stand pat and watch this team pull itself apart (Capers vs. Palmer, coaches vs. players, coaches vs. Casserly, and ultimately players vs. players). I hope I am wrong but IMO when an organization goes this wrong, you have to change things at the top and you have to do it quickly. That ball falls to you Mr. McNair...what are you going to do with it? The outcome for the current team management is inevitable IMO therefore the question is "when"? Please consider that while everyone (including players in the media even) will be begging for serious changes by the end of the season, you will have more damage (psychological and physical) to deal with if you delay making changes.

You are a class guy that has shown your generosity and loyalty to those that perform (DD, Pitts contracts, Free agents and draft picks) and that is admirable but someone in the organization needs to hold the team "accountable" for what happens when they don't get the job done. Your current coaches won't so unfortunately that ball is in your hands now...what are you going to do with it?

Even this raggedy coaching staff will show some improvement. THey'll win a couple of games and everyone will start saying it's ONLY our 4th year, and then Capers and Casserly & Co. will have another full year to put a cruddy product with no vision, no real feel for the game, on the field. And then maybe--just maybe--McNair will move in the off-season.

That's the conventional way to do this and I am afraid McNair is far too conventional to take the better road and move now, when we have the whole season to develop a new team and a new approach and a new strength against real competition.

You bring in a coach now and you're saying: "We have a mess on our hands and we're going to fix it this season. We may not win much, but we will be MUCH better prepared for next year."

If you wait until the off-season to make the move, then it's NEXT season that the new team makes all it's mistakes in the real games.

I say do it now, before some dribble of improvement persuades everyone to give Capers and Casserly more time.

capers is going down the road if the team goes below 800 ball. i know that to be a fact, can't tell you how i know but i know!! i love Charlie Casserly but capers stinks, if he was so great he'd still be in carolina.

Im writting it again, all preseason coach sat out all of our starting team because in his mind he was trying to evaluate younger players. I called for the coaches job after the Cowboys game due to his failure as a team leader. How dare him say that after our five turnover that we cant have that when for years David Carr has been asking for linemen. Try looking for receivers when 8 players are coming thru your from door to lay you on your back. David all I can do is pray for you not to get hurt which I really did this afternoon, please Bob McNair if you paid 800 million please have the guts to run your team too. Ps.. and what did we get out of preseason evaluation, CC Brown.. Wrong again Coach.. :texflag:

Ok I finally got my email. This is it wrapped in a nutshell. Remember this is from the most knowledgable Carolina Panthers Football person I know.

Capers did a good job building a team and starting a tradition of excellence, but he was defensive minded and one of the most conservative coaches on the planet. And when the going got tough, he really botched things up.

Is this the point we are at Mr. McNair? I am not positive, but you must consider what went wrong the last time Senor Capers led a team. Why wait until he really botches things up?

Okay then, here is the whole thing:

Harley, it's been a while since Capers so my memory is a little foggy, but here's what I remember: Capers was a good first coach for the Panthers in a number of ways. First, he was a good guy - character first, disciplined, and all that. He fit well with the Richardson's demand for a team, players, and atmosphere that were 'family friendly' and 'community first.' I have good memories by and large of Capers - because let's face it, coming into an expansion franchise as the first coach, you know you're cannon fodder. Capers established a good regimen and a good team. I didn't like the philosophy of "be good right now" where they hired a bunch of fading stars, expensive free agents, at the expense of building through youth. Jacksonville which started the same year went the youth route. Strangely enough they both succeeded quickly with opposing philosophies, and almost met each other in the Super Bowl. What a year that was...

Capers had a very bad year and made some enormous personnel and disciplinary mistakes, the largest of which was the Kerry Collins fiasco. I'll sum it up briefly. I'm a coach and a dad, and we all know that sports can be all consuming and produce powerful emotions. Your star player comes in with the weight of the world on his shoulders after a big loss and says, "Bench me coach, my heart's not in it." What do you do? Well if you can't talk the young man out of his decision right then, any coach worth a damn says, "Okay Kerry I understand, go get a shower, go home. It was a tough day." You send him home and then do nothing.

You pour yourself a big glass of Makers Mark, prop your feet up and watch late night TV. Next morning you go about your business, having said nothing to anyone, you get ready to run practice. Kid comes back in and more than likely he's had a change of heart. The heat of the moment has passed and he's had time to reconsider. He may come in all sheepish or whatever. You put your arm on his shoulder and say, "It's no big deal. We've all had days like that. It's between you and me and as far as I'm concerned it never happened. Your my man, lets go have a good practice."

What did Capers do? He marched down to the reporters and told them what Kerry said. The Panthers lost a talented quarterback, huge sums of money, Kerry was not just demoted, he was cut! and he started drinking much heavier (his DUI was three blocks from my condo at the time after drinking at the Sunset Club; the State Troopers just wait for people coming out of that place, he never had a chance. Why high profile players don't just take private town cars when they go out I'll never understand) and it was the beginning of the end for Capers.

I guess I had more to say than I thought. Capers left and the Panthers brought in Seifert - a man who never connected with the players, who's ideas about football were out-of-sync with reality, and who generally made a huge mess of things. Capers did a good job building a team and starting a tradition of excellence, but he was defensive minded and one of the most conservative coaches on the planet. And when the going got tough, he really botched things up. That's my take on him.

800 ball? So he is fired if they don't win 13 games? Heck, at this rate, I would be happy with 80 ball, much less 800. :penalty:

Andy Reid, speaking at his press conference after losing by 4 points to the Falcons on Monday night: "I need to do a better job of putting my players in position to make plays on the offensive side of the ball...On the defensive side, I saw some good things.'' (Quoted in postgame recap at sports.yahoo.com)

Dom Capers, speaking at his press conference after losing by 15 points to the Bills on Sunday: "I think David and us haven't been as efficient as we've wanted to be on offense. Over the last two preseason games, we weren't as efficient as we wanted to be. And yesterday certainly wasn't the way we wanted to start out. Am I distressed? No." (Quoted in today's Chronicle online)

I'm definitely not on the "fire Capers" bandwagon, but when I read Reid's comments I couldn't help but notice the acceptance of accountability. Must be nice for the Eagles players to see that attitude.

The Pats have a coach that's flexible and capable of making effective adjustments on offense. They are multi-dimensional and you could argue that their talent is not that much better than ours on offense. He is the type of coach that Bum Phillips was talking about when he said "he can take your'n and beat his'n..."

The Texans have a coach who's stubborn to a fault with a simplistic, inflexible, and archaic offensive philosophy that obviously doesn't meld with his his offensive coordinator's. After about two Texans offensive plays, an entire offseason of working on shorter timing routes went out the window because the Bills D "took it away."

"Oooh, press coverage with the corners AND a cover 2, what do we do now, Chris?" "Well, we should attack the seam with our tight end but you said to keep him in to block, plus, we really don't have a good tight end because that one we drafted three years ago never panned out." <ten second pause to write notes> "Uh, ok Chris, let's just go back to what we did at Mt. Union and see what happens. Just remember, let's not get too far ahead because we're trying to be within 3 points in the 4th quarter. Talk to you later"

TRY TO WIN THE D*** GAME! What difference would it make it we didn't make it and they scored. You will get beat 22-7 or 29-7. At least ry to win the game, seems to me that he gave up at that moment!

I heard this secondhand, but I 'll relate it to you all anyway....

A friend of a friend was at a charity golf tournament a couple of weeks ago and he got paired up with Chris Palmer. This guy was riding Palmer pretty good about the Texans lack of offensive production, when lo and behold, Palmer tried to explain the situation. Palmer said the following...

"It's not my fault. All that Capers wants to do is run, run, run. He wants to control the ball and the clock. I have no say in the matter."

Just thought I'd throw that out here....for what it's worth.
